I've tried 3 different USB drives--no go. I'll give it ONE more try, then give up! Just not worth the aggravation!

FWIW, I'm still on OS 10.14.6 Mojave. There are several 32bit apps that I'm not willing to give up yet. When I do, I'll update. That might be a mute point, as I very likely will ditch this 2015 15" Intel MBP for the new 16" M2 MBP due out soon.

In my limited knowledge, I doubt it. Sounds like the screen 'crapped out', but if you would like the 4.4.1 system, I'll send, but need an email address.
