Union\'s....

So, umm, whats the general concensus on labor unions?

Union\'s....

Don\'t like them, I once helped management to stop a union from getting in. IF I don\'t like my work conditions, I work half-ass for a little bit and then quit and find a BETTER job. I don\'t want to pay for some rich asshole union which doesn\'t seem to do any good anymore (at least here in quebec Canada). Besides for the company I helped, if a union would have got in - the shop would have closed down. Bunch of lazy minimum wage workers there, I had not many friends because I started at min. and climbed up to about 14 an hour within a year and a half (min was below 6 bucks). While one guy was there for 10 years and was making something like 12 bucks  <- he could have quit, get educated, and get a better job.

Union\'s....
Out dated and serve no meaningful purpose.
besides making your paycheck smaller.

Union\'s....

The reason I ask is, they voted one in where I work.

I, and many other people knew nothing about it. They only needed 51% of the workforce and they supposedly got it, its a closed shop, so I have to join the union.

I don\'t really want to, because I have to pay dues, and don\'t get any extra money from them in return...

Union\'s....

NO YOU DO NOT heve to pay dues and all that.. you certainly do not have to join the union.

Union\'s....

yay unions... Government should put a stop to that but the unions make so much cash that they own the freaking goverments...

Union\'s....
I don\'t? Its a \"closed shop\" union where I work. Either you join\'em or find a new place of employment.
I have never heard of that before. Your EMPLOYER will terminate your employment if you choose not to join the union? If that is actually the case, its another reason for me to dislike unions.

Union\'s....

that is true. in some states there is a closed shop law that requires all employees to join if a union represents the employees or find other employment.in the whse Where I used to work, we had 3 votes in four yrs, if it had gotten in, the only people that wouldnt have had to join were the drivers, because they couldnt be represented by a \"labor\" union because a drivers local was present in our area....

Union\'s....

We live in very sick times...

I think I\'ll go on welfare and get 4 or 5 checks (my cat, my dog, my fish, me, chuck the fly)... f$%k the system, f$%k \"the man\", f$%k everything... <- depression kicked in, needing meds.

Union\'s....

NO YOU DO NOT heve to pay dues and all that.. you certainly do not have to join the union.
The fire and police commission require you to be a member of the union to be employed. I am going to be a union worker, but atleast the police unions in this state have officers backs.
NO YOU DO NOT heve to pay dues and all that.. you certainly do not have to join the union.
I think labor laws can differ between states, but in my experience (UAW 30+ yrs in a \"closed\" shop) You can\'t usually be forced to join the union, but in a closed shop, the union has the right to withhold dues whether you join or not.

Union\'s....

exactly. the laws do differ state to state. and if you plan on staying at the job in a closed shop state being forced to pay the dues anyways, you might as well join to get whatever benefits they have or move on....makes no sense to pay for what youre not receiving...

That\'s how you get any rebate on your dues. Also, the unions have a larger voice to yell at OSHA and other safety orgs. that deal with the workplace.

Union\'s....

again, probably different state to state or union to union...the one we had several votes on only paid ~$25/day to stand on picket line if that were to happen..a far cry from the~$18 an hour we were making

Union\'s....

Now, my personal take on unions. They still have a purpose in protecting workers rights and safety.
BUT! They also have a tendency to keep unqualified people in positions they shouldn\'t be filling.
Now that the era of the defined benefit retirement plan and employer provided health insurance has pretty much passed, they can\'t do much on a day to day basis.

def true.in some industries they have a place as far as safety/work conditions go, but from what Ive seen, it comes down to employers taking care of their employees, which is happening less and less frequently as well, so I can see places wanting to organize to feel \"protected\". But, I dont agree with the time in/qualifications thing they got going on though...
