Aviator quit at 70mph w/Stop Safely Now & Full Accessory Power

Thanks!
I have had 2 Aviators. A 2020 BL and now a 2022 BL GT. No problems with either. My 2022 is now 11 months old with 12,000 miles. Love both of the vehicles. Like the features of the GT Version. Vehicle says approx. 45% of driving on electri.
I believe my wife will also do most of her driving on electric since her commute is short, and she doesn't drive the way I do. Really wanting to get into one of these, though I have a few calls out to friends that own some dealers to see what they may know. This appears to be one of the only threads on the issue, but having so many people seek it out, although given the volume of how many GT's are out there - I just don't know. Any vehicle can have an issue (I've had my fair share as well), just doesn't sit pretty with me knowing something this drastic is seemingly so prevalent. Appreciate your response, and we're going from Audi to Lincoln for a reason... Don't want to close one can of worms just to open another.

Holy crap! Had I not been living in an urban area where parking in tight spaces is sometimes an issue I would've gotten an Aviator GT instead of a Nautilus Black Label. Glad I didn't pursue that further for around the same price.

Explorer and Aviator have been plagued by problems ever since launch at that damned Chicago Assembly Plant. I knew that Ford botched the plant conversion to begin with from the magazine stories. It's unfortunate because the styling and design of the Aviator are nice.

Forgot about this thread. After some more research and phone calls - we went ahead and ordered the Aviator GT in Gilded Green. Navigator was too big, Nautilus was too small, Aviator fit the bill perfectly. We'll see what happens!

Hi Swoop, I don't have info per se, but unfortunately it was not the cabin coolant heater. Service put 100+ miles road testing it after swapping it and seemed all good. I picked it up and drove it for another month or so, but the same error popped up. Made the decision to turn it in (buy back) and am in an XC90 Recharge now. So sad because I was really into the car otherwise. Mine was a '22.

What I would say is, God forbid it happens to your vehicle, don't panic even though it seems alarming. The very last time it happened, I knew what to expect and just switched to ICE mode and was able to drive fine. Finished my errand and then to the dealership. Just don't shut it off or you won't be able to restart it and will have to tow.

Thanks for the latest information. Hopefully, we'll have good luck with it and it appears as of at least now, the dealer we're working with is really supportive and has been keeping in touch rather well. Hopefully, their service department will be the same. I'll start taking my Edge ST up there even though it's a bit further for me than the local dealer, just to try to establish a good relationship prior to its arrival.

Best of wishes with the XC90!

My wife has 2022 Aviator GT with 3,000 miles on. I bought it on 12/22 in Alabama. I drove it to KY the first day I had it. On the drive the battery never charged. Read 0 miles electric the whole drive, which I find odd.

The first time my wife got in the car she got the “full accessory power message” with a No-start, 545 miles on dash. No other messages. The car wouldn’t go into gear. It said it detected a fault in hybrid battery system. After 30mins the car started up without issue with no codes. (We googled the message and found another Ford forum that said let the car sit)

Local dealership took 3 weeks to get it in the shop. They said nothing was wrong and everything was up to date. Even though the vehicle said it detected a problem with the hybrid system. Week of Feb 1st.

Last Wednesday, while driving 70mph on the interstate the car turned off. Wife said if felt like someone turned the ignition off. Gas pedal was dead and she had to coast to a stop. The car popped up “Stop Safely Now” and “full accessory power” and would not restart. She waited 30mins again, like before, and still nothing. She tried the start button to no avail, tried to remote start it with the key (nothing). Car restarted with the phone as key app though. No messages showed after finally restarting.

Took the car back to Lincoln and they said they can’t find anything. They’ve had it a week and put 100 miles on it. The service manager took it home over the weekend as well.

I have filed complaints with the NHTSA and Lincoln.

Anybody else dealing with these issues and does anybody have a fix for it. This thing is a death trap.

Alex

I bought a new 2022 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring Black Label in May of 2022. I had so many computer/screen problems the first three weeks I owned the car that I had to have a loaner for nearly a month. Last week I was pulling out of my driveway and the car would not move, told me to slowly stop driving. It wouldn’t even turn off. It had to be towed and they even had to use a screw driver to turn the vehicle off and put it into neutral. They finally duplicated the issue at the dealer and said all it needed was a software update. Easy peasy!

The dealer then told us that they can’t guarantee that it wouldn’t happen again. This isn’t a computer issue, this is a SAFETY issue. They returned my car today and I’m petrified that it’s going to do it again. I have a 4 and 6 year old and I can’t believe I have to be fearful of driving my $95k vehicle. I wish I stayed with Cadillac, this is an awful vehicle.

Really scary and terrible situation to be in. These stories make me feel lucky that I have only had a raft of non-disabling issues, so far. If you don't have it already, I would get your dealer fix uncertainty in writing. I would look into a Ford buyback or, if necessary, Lemon Law. Ford is the king of vehicle buybacks so you may be lucky. I truly hope you can get your situation rectified. Best of luck with this.

Lincoln called us tonight, they refuse to put it in writing but offered to look into a buyback. The lady was annoyed with our trepidation with keeping the vehicle. We will see what happens and thank you! It’s a very unfortunate situation.

Really pleased to hear you are likely on the road to recovery!

Well seems we've now joined the party, wife leaving Dr. office and gets warning car won't start. Eventually locking/unlocking and random attempt starts and gets home (driving in Preserve EV mode). Takes another ride later (again in Preserve EV) and get out, picks up kiddo and home ok, but then once parked could not restart call. Awaiting call back from dealer.

I see a lot of reports, concerns and issues .. has anyone actually got a resolution?

I'm hanging my head in shame as an engineer. All of this it totally preventable with the appropriate V&V and testing. So sorry for your plight(s).

We just got the notification that our Aviator GT is heading to the dealer and we should soon have it in our garage. It sucks to keep reading that this is happening more and more. I've not mentioned anything to my wife about it, and hopefully, it never happens. I'll be sure to tell her about switching to "Preserve EV" if a message such as this comes up on the screen in the car that are here in the thread.

2,313 miles and it's happened. We love this thing, but I'm already slated an 8am service call to start this terrible process. The rear camera is janky, the collision alert fires off at random times, and now - received a huge red and white triangle on the HUD and NAV screen stating that the "vehicle is shutting down" and then poof, the damn thing shut down immediately without warning. The message was on the HUD and NAV for about a second and a half and it died. Thankfully we were at surface street speeds around 30-35 and I was in command of the vehicle.

We really do like this thing, but I will not be screwed over by Chicago. I have a billion percent faith in my F150 and had 100% faith in anything Ford/Lincoln but this has really shot me in the gut. This is the first time I've ever experienced an issue with any Ford product dating back to the early '90s! Especially this Aviator, being my wife's daily driver - I cannot and will not do this.

I really hate to come here and say it has happened to me, when I am such a proud supporter and defender, even, of the brand(s), but this really sucks. Things happen, any time, any place, and we gotta roll with the punches, but there's some punches that we can easily avoid or walk away from.

I'll be sure to keep this thread and unfortunate adventure updated.

This is a real shame that anyone has to go through that. I fully empathize with you. We briefly looked into the hybrid - for a variety of reasons we opted to go conventional ICE. Best of luck, and note that without too many options, ours has been quite reliable if you like it so much and wish to get a buy-back and consider the gas version. Condolences.

I still beat my chest to Ford and Lincoln and I would be first in line to swap Ford for Lincoln if they ever made a Raptor or Mustang version in the luxury brand immediately. Perhaps they just simply don't have this hybrid stuff worked out. I doubt we'd be able to stay with the brand, as this was really the only thing that tickled our particular pickle... Perhaps a Mach-E GT since this is mostly a city vehicle anyway. The Raptor is the king of the highway for long trips, even over the Lincoln.

This is really a shame particularly since this nontrivial problem has been around for years. I hope you get the the problem fixed quickly or get a buyback. Best of luck!!

Sorry for delayed response. I did not receive any email notifications of messages. Anyway, there's a whole lot to unpack here. My local dealership, in their infinite wisdom, told me to pick the car up while they waited on parts for the hybrid battery.

We picked the car up on 2/17. On 2/20, the car quit again on the interstate. My wife was driving in a construction zone with my 2yr old and 4yr old in the car. She called and said the car was acting funny. It would accelerate at 100% and then quit. It would accelerate at 100% and then quit. Then it died. She had to coast almost 3 miles before finding a safe place to pull over. I put a dash camera in the car. I have a 5min video of her coasting on the interstate. She was doing 37mph with semi's blowing past her blowing their horns. My 2yr and 4yr are in the background screaming, "mommy what's wrong with your car? Mommy why won't your car go! Mommy go faster! Are we out of gas?" The car got towed to dealership and has been there since 2/20/22. No parts have been changed, nothing has been done to it

I sent Lincoln an email that night and told them this was no longer my problem. The car is their problem and I want my money back. Lincoln refused. They have told me multiple times that nothing is wrong with the car. They see nothing wrong. They aren't saying I'm lying, They just cant get their tech to replicate it. I asked them to review their decision, no dice. I begged them to buy the car back, no dice.

I called a Lawyer to discuss. He told me since I bought the car in Alabama I would have to sue there. He said he would sue Lincoln, the dealership, and Lincoln financial services. The dealer really didn't know what was going on and I felt they should know before they got sued. So I called them. Within 2hrs of my phone call they offered to buy it back. That sounded great. They were gonna do the right thing, so I thought. Turns out they will only give me my purchase price back. I have to eat the tax, title, license and trade-in tax savings, $7,000. I told them no. The dealer did share the Oasis report with me though, for reasons I'll never know.

I called Lincoln one last time to buy the car back. I told them I had the Oasis report and video evidence of the car quitting. They said no. I told them this wasn't the last time they would hear from me and I would go full scorched earth on them. I would literally burn the whole god damn system down to protect my wife and kids, if they wouldn't buy it back. They told me good luck.

Back to the Oasis report. Oasis is Ford's diagnostic report to help service techs diagnose vehicle issues. It registers fault codes on a 60-day rolling basis. My wife's aviator has disabled the hybrid motor on 14 separate occasions! It registered 358 individual diagnosis faults in a 60-day span. That's 6 faults a day. On 2/2/22, the first time it quit, the car registered individual 35 codes when it shut down. The time stamp on the Oasis matches up minute to minute with the videos and pictures I have showing "stop safely now" & "full accessory power".

A Ford engineer called me, also, and asked to put some type of sophisticated engine monitor on the car. I told him I didn't care, we wont ever drive it again though. It's sitting at the dealership and they could go get it for all I cared. He informed me that almost every single Aviator plug-in is doing this. Not all of them but, "a whole lot of them"

I have been on the warpath with Ford since I obtained the Oasis report and that engineer called. This is the hill I'm going to die on. Ford is going to recall these cars. Someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed. Along with my NHTSA complaint, I have filed complaints with the Attorney General's of Alabama and Kentucky, and have spoken with staff in both offices. I called my local news and did an on camera interview, they are running the story in the coming weeks. They have to contact all the parties I contacted and get statements first. A national CBSNews correspondent called me yesterday to discuss as well. Both of my US Senators sent letters of congressional inquiry to the NHTSA about my complaint, Sen McConnell and Sen Paul. Rep Yarmuth called Ford himself and asked them what they're doing. I sent 3 certified letters to Ford's General Counsel. I filed a complaint with the Alabama BBB, under their lemon law act.

The NHTSA called me and asked for a full report. I spoke to them twice today and they said I'll hear from them tomorrow as well. They have run this up the chain of command and have asked for all of the info I have. They have asked me to provide the videos, documentation and any voicemails/emails/texts from anyone that has touched the car.

After Rep Yarmuth called, the Lincoln customer service rep called me and said they wanted to buy the car back from me. Previously, I told her she would be calling me back asking for the car and she was dismissive of that statement. I warned her, and meant it, when I said I would scorch earth them. There's an old quote from a play, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned". I'd like to replace that quote with "don't piss off a stay-at-home dad protecting his babies". I will move Heaven and Earth in order to protect my family, especially my children who can't protect themselves.

We shall see

(Attached is the Oasis report and my service repair orders. My wife took those pictures of my babies before she pulled out of the driveway on 2/20/22. 7 minutes later the car turned itself off at 65mph. That easily could have been the last photos my kids were ever in.)
I had this occur in my 2022 Aviator Grand Touring Black Label. They returned it and I have not had it occur again, this was in March.

At my regular service they found a “leak”. Told me I’d have the car returned to me in just a few days. They had it for 8 days and continued to have to repair new issues. My car was returned to me this last Friday evening. I drove my car around town with the kids running errands in preparation for the holiday. It’s smelled funny but I figure that it was simply because it had been worked on the last 8 days. I get home and the kids are in the car, gathering their toys, etc from being out all day and my hood starts smoking lightly then excessively to the point I had to call the fire department. I thought this POS was about to blow up.

Fire came, teared to ensure the battery wasnt about to blow up and advised me to get it towed right away. So, again. It has been towed to the dealer.

Also note, when they dropped my vehicle off on Friday, the navigation kept turning off and on. I never even punched in a destination. I’d hit cancel, it would start a new route. The windows continued to go up and down as I tried to roll them up. And while this is clearly yet another computer glitch and may not be considered a danger, it’s annoying and ridiculous. For such a luxury car, this is a death trap.

Any suggestions on what to do next? My husband and I intend on hiring an attorney if they don’t take this back. I was terrified that while my babies (5 and 6) were gathering their belongings that the car was going to blow up. I ripped my 6 year old out of the car and nearly ripped his arm off. I could hardly dial 911 I was shaking like you wouldn’t believe.

How can Lincoln get away with this?
