2024 Hybrid Nautilus (Engine Problems)

You (and many others here) are much more mechanically inclined than I am. Others like me may incorrectly describe a symptom out of lack of knowledge, rather than some sort of suspicious motivation. I couldn't begin to remember the number of stupid things I've said.

I'd need to go back and re-read all of the related threads, but I think most or all of the 12 members I mentioned had the injector issue specifically diagnosed by their service departments. Are they lying? Maybe. But this is a pretty small space to be looking for a moment of fame.
I wasn’t able to find as many as you with actual diagnosis from the shop. Quite a few claim to get no feedback at all from the dealer. I saw a couple that claimed the vehicle was totaled or the engine was bad but with no description of the damage. Hydro lock can bend rods but at idle it’s less likely. The scoring of the cylinder if the injector tip makes its way to the edge of the piston can be bad but the 2.0 is an aluminum block, meaning it’s sleeved. Easy fix is a short block for a dealer but a non warranty repair would be a sleeve. Probably head/valve damage too if it bounced around. Before it hydro locks it would run absolutely horribly and you are sure to get a check engine light.

I have been hesitant to broadcast the issue we have with our Nautilus Hybrid but I thought I might share our experience over the past week or so. I had completed the failure survey a while back but this is the first post regarding the issue.
We took delivery of our Nautilus on May 3, 2024. Smooth ride compared to our 22 Corsair GT. I asked my wife if she would like to go for a drive and dinner that evening. Dinner over and away we went. Driving down the street all of a sudden loud tick tick and shudder of drive train (engine light comes on ). Pulled over immediately shut it off.. waited a bit then restarted it ( of course it started in hybrid) so smooth take off then boom the tick and shutter returned with the “pull off road safely warning “ flashed across the dash! It limped into a parking lot. Called Road side assistance. Little did I know what was ahead of me this past week but I definitely knew there was something wrong. By the time the Nautilus was loaded and unloaded off the flat deck tow truck it was puffing white smoke and shuttered so bad we ended up hand pushing it into a parking spot at the dealer device area. To me this was proof of a blown head/ gasket dropped a valve or or or !!
I am thankful for the attention I was provided by our salesman.. he went above and beyond his regular duties. This was like 6:30 pm and he put a dealer plate on my 22 GT and delivered the keys so we would have wheels. We are still driving the Corsair to this day a full 8 days since the event.
This past week has gone slowly without a full diagnosis. First thing done was put new spark plugs in (4 days to get parts). This had no effect on issue. Dealer did say they scoped the cylinders through plug holes indicated that cylinders looked good but Now they are saying they will be changing fuel injectors but have no ETA on parts arrival. (Took another 3 days ) and have not done basic checks on gas in oil or antifreeze into cylinder due to head gasket issue. It’s just sitting out in the lot with no full diagnosis.
Here is where it gets your attention. I had put 37 kms on it, with a total of 51 km on odometer.
I believe I have lost faith in this beautiful ride but no loss in the brand. I have stated that a full refund will be in order should the engine be determined as full failure but would happily accept a suitable replacement.
There is a dealer ordered Hybrid incoming any day now that I would accept as long as injectors have been inspected and approved. The only issue is this alternative Hybrid has a build date within the “recommended demo/ hold “ memo.
I guess only time will tell which direction we go. Sorry for the long message.
Tim.

Communication by the dealer is so important. Have you talked to Lincoln support?

Not sure if you are asking me this question but just incase I have an open case with Lincoln Client Center. And the consierge has claimed to be my advocate and we have been in touch daily. I think he first called to ask questions related to roadside assistance but has become calls regarding the “engine issue”. The Consierge has also been in touch with dealer but hasn’t provided any more info than I already have received from the dealer personally. Communication has been good…. Service not so good!! It is as if they are following the least expensive issues first but now there is a roadblock with parts issue.
Tim.

When I entered that p/n, it says discontinued and does not apply to my VIN but could they be issuing an new p/n?View attachment 20959
This may not be the correct part number. It is possible that since there were so many issues with the injectors that known good injectors were given a new part number to mitigate any risk of installing bad injectors.

I agree....if this is the case, FoMoCo will usually just modify the suffix or prefix (I usually see suffix changes) to the part number. The core portion of the part number usually stays the same.

Reports of failure during extended engine idle. The hybrid simply doesn’t allow this unless there is an issue with the high voltage system. Reports of fuel leaking near the exhaust….opposite side of the engine from both sets of injectors.
Please define what the "extended time length" was that these posters reported. Are you saying these injectors cannot fail at idle within allotted time parameters? What are the idle time parameters we are speaking about?

Are you saying that raw fuel cannot drip out the exhaust if an injector tip breaks resulting in to much fuel dumping in a cylinder? Please explain why this cannot be so, your above explanation is very vague, Thanks!

This sounds exactly like the broken high pressure injector tip. Basically it floods the cylinder with unmetered fuel. The smoke is unburned/partially burned fuel. If you kept letting the gas engine run it migh eventually hydro-lock.

The vehicle won’t idle with the gas engine running unless the high voltage battery is low or heat is called. It has a default idle timeout of 30 mins and even with the climate control systems on you won’t get too many engine starts within 30 mins.
If the original post we are both referring to was referring to the tail pipe then absolutely. It simply said fuel leaking near the exhaust.

It’s hard to say right now. It’s got the same markings as my buddies 23 escape. But the ford site has a different short number and no part listed.

Here it is listed on eBay with the same part number. FORD ESCAPE 1.5L ENGINE MOTOR FUEL INJECTOR OEM 2023 💎 | eBay

Anyone here without a hybrid or with a hybrid that does not have the VIN listed? Can you take a picture of verify the P/N on the lower injector?
It would be interesting if they actually are different.

Holy cow. I’m supposed to be taking possession of my hybrid tomorrow. I wonder what precautionary measures I can take? I am guessing my dealer hasn’t yet sold enough of these to even know what I’m referring to.

The rate in the forum is definitely not even 10%. Forums are not a reasonable sample to determine real world statistics. Of the claimed engine failures only 1 or 2 were members that were previously active. Several of the new members who claim engine failures have suspicious stories too. People often will look for forums when they have a problem so you end up with a concentrated group.

I am curious on what is considered suspicious. Of course, data is not enough to understand the true population issue rate. Fails will be reported more than no issues. The CSP alone says it is an exposure to 6000+.

I just wish the reported failures had more information or didn’t just ghost the threads after. Only a few stuck around to give updates. A few had very suspicious back stories that don’t line up with basic vehicle operation.

As you and others have said, there are people who only post in forums like this when they have a problem. I don't think that's odd. And although we'd like more information (cuz that's who we are), that group of posters don't really care about feeding our curiosity. What I don't understand is what makes you think posters had "suspicious back stories." What'd I miss?

To date, I see nothing suspicious about any reported failures, as a few above have questioned also. The 2 "suspicious" reports cited are actually very credible, based on admissions made to my response above!

Rasherms00, welcome to the forum. You found us just in time! Honestly, I would absolutely not take possession of a Hybrid now. Ford has had a "recommended" no demo and no delivery on the model since May 1. Imo, dealers cannot deliver Hybrids in good conscience right now.

Ya. I simply do not believe that this is a minor, isolated problem. I don't think there's a 50% fail-rate, but it ain't 10% either. Imo.

Odd I picked up my Hybrid May 2, 2024. The parts department looked up my vin and it's on the bad injector list.

If you know your VIN you can go here, and after accepting terms you'll get to a page where you can choose to plug in VIN. If you see CSP 24B23 injector replacement listed, then Ford/Lincoln have determined that yours is one of the vehicles that should get the fix.

(If you don't know your VIN yet, ask the dealer to check for if that CSP 24B23 is listed for your vehicle. If they say there's no way to check it, I would ask to speak to the dealer manager - they CAN check for that.)

Failures have been seen very early (within the first few hundred miles) and noticeably later (up in the 2300 - 2400 mile range). From what people posting here have provided, there's no obvious specific driver action that led to a failure.

If it were me, if the VIN is listed and I haven't taken possession I would hold off - tell them you want the fix installed prior to signing/key handover. Several people have done so recently, choosing to wait to get a car without the issue rather than start driving a vehicle that could have a major engine failure due to a known problem.

Supposedly the dealer bulletin and parts ordering process will be out very soon. Ask your dealer to spot your vehicle in as early as possible to have the repair done (rather than prioritize unsold vehicles on the lot.)

(First in line should be the vehicles that are actually in buyers' hands, already bring driven as they're essentially running at risk, but vehicles where there's a commitment, though handover hasn't yet happened, should also be high up in priority.)

Thanks. When I go to the link you provided, and enter my VIN, a list of issues show up, that all seem like non-specific known 2024 Nautilus issues. Please see attached.

Thanks for info. Tried getting in. Wants me to accept conditions. No button appears to do that??
