Pirelli tires - what to expect

I contacted Pirelli about my Scorpion MS tire availability in US and they confirmed it is not available in US and do not know when it will be..

Since the mid-90s I have only run Micheins but the Pirelli's handle/ride are fine with an rubbery road feel so far. The only complaint is they are noisy on certain surfaces If I went back to Michelin's with the ride properties I like per reviews at tirerack.com, it would be the Defender2 since they do not make the Primacy Touring in my tire size. Continental does not make my size either that comes with some Nauti's. I want good ride and noise plus last 40K.

I've had a couple of sets of Defender2. Primacy Touring is used on the 20" tires I have. Not bad, but I'll still try to upgrade when the time comes.

I am not sure it is just tire related byt I had to take my dad to appt and it was in a major downour (like 1 inch in less than a few minutes). I had to drive through some ponding and there was a slight car shift on road as I drove through it did not try to yank the steering wheel like on our MKZ. It plowed through, I am not sure if the weight, tires, ground clearance, or awd software handled it. It felt confident the entire time but still had to drive slow due to almost no visibility - everyone had their hazards on....

From Pirelli regarding my tire availability. I saw on Facebook that someone had a similar issue with Goodyears. Is the comment on "special ordert" intended to offer hope. It would not solve any immediate need.

My 2018 Ford Edge Titanium had Pirelli's, I live in SoCal so don't see much of a weather mix. I liked the ride & handling and were quiet.
The only complaint I had with them was the way they followed the" Rain Grooves" in the Freeways out here. It would make the car do a bit of
shimmy as the grooves moved side to side in the road surface. Our new 2023 Nautilus has Continentals on it. Seem OK so far, don't follow the Rain Grooves like the Pirelli's did.

My car is going in for tire balancing again tomorrow morning, going to have them look at a couple other things also. I called Lincoln concierge yesterday and opened a case while I was nice and frustrated while feeling it on my drive back to Austin from Houston.

A rock also hit my windshield and left a nice deep chip with a few splintered cracks around it. I was enraged. Had it filled by Safelite to keep it from spreading. I’ll probably wait for after another long trip I have planned for August to file on comprehensive for replacement. It’s going to be a nightmare with all the Texas stickers and having to get the tint redone. We took the other car out today because I didn’t feel like looking at the Nautilus in my petty vendetta mindset.

I have spent time researching what I would get but options are somewhat limited due to unique tire size: 255/55/20.

Excluding the more snow rated tires my options are:

Michelin
Defender2 (just put these on my MKZ)
Primacy A/S but seem these are being discontinued

Pirelli
Scorpion WeatherActive
Scorpion AS Plus 3

Goodyear
Assurance WeatherReady - discontinued with no similar

No Continentals in that size.

I have read that a new windshield is almost $2000.

Hi angore. You do not mention where you checked for tires. However, check The Tire Rack. They show ~41 available tires in that size from:

BFGoodrich (1), Bridgestone (1), Cooper (3), Falken (3), Goodyear (3), Hankook (2), Kumho (1), Laufenn (1), Michelin (6), Nitto (2), Pirelli (9),
Sumitomo (1), Toyo (1), Vredestein (4), Yokohama (3).

Only one of those tires is rated strictly as a "snow tire". A few do have a "Severe Snow" rating, but they are still All-Season tires. The rest are rated "All-Season", "Touring", "All-Terrain", "Summer" etc. Essentially, most are "Crossover/SUV Touring All Season" tires.

And to my knowledge, the Michelin Primacy is not being discontinued. Perhaps the newer/updated version is being released soon, so the "older" version may be on clearance, and/or listed as limited availability/stock. This is standard procedure.

I realize a lot of these brands may not be on your preferred shopping list, but you do have more than 5-6 choices. Michelin and Pirelli alone offer ~15.

Hi angore. Thought that might have been the situation: In that case, if you do not plan on off-roading your Nautilus much, I would recommend the Michelin Primacy A/S. They are not being discontinued.

And again, that is simply my own personal opinion/choice. There are many other good tires on that list.

Hi angore. You hopefully shouldn't need new tires on your 2024 Nautilus anytime soon, but good luck in your search when the time comes. The choices may even expand by then.

EDIT- I also recommend the Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season 4. I have had two sets of the immediate predecessors (Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season 3 and 3+) on my older MKZ, and highly recommend them.

See how you like those Defender2s on your MKZ. I had the Defender and the Defender2 on two different cars. I liked the tire and it's definitely good in snow (not that we get much here).

Thanks for feedback . We had the Defender T+H on the MKZ but had an alignment issue and cupped 3 of them so just replaced.. My interest in t his is current tire is not available in US and 400+ if they were. I have had issues with punctures so just thinking about options if I had to replace. I default to Michelin but except for noise at times I like the pirelli tire.
