I am Lincoln MKT Expert! Please ask your questions of me...I will include an FAQ!

Mr. Expert,

Where is the cheapest place to score replacement parts for the electronic suspension? Or is there a conversion kit to convert that suspension to normal coilovers?

Also I'm having a transmission issue I think, the car shifts smoothly however if I floor it the downshift from second to first gear the car winds up normally and shifts fine but the power isn't there like it should be, is this a torque converter issue? Would changing the rear differential fluid help this out? As I have not done that yet

FAQ
Clunks, thumps, and noises up front

#1. First check the swaybar endlinks. Turn your wheel all the way to the right or left depending on the side you are inspecting. Look under where the strut is and there is a long rod-like item. This is the sway bar endlink and the most common front suspension item which simply snaps in half every 30,000 miles or so. Fortunately, this is not a hard or expensive part to replace. When it snaps then it will clunk against the inner fender area. The front end will also dive and sway as its now disconnected from the front sway bar.

#2. Second, the front lower control arm bushing gives out every 120,000 miles give or take. This will cause a noise. No one to include the dealership will be able to figure this out. If you experience this kind of noise and have no idea where its coming from around 120,000 miles up front its probably those lower control arms. This is a more expensive repair. Look underneath the vehicle and the two lower control arms look like forks right around the area where the swaybar is. If you have trouble finding it just google for pictures. When you look underneath the vehicle the lower control arm should jump out at you.

#3. Sway-bar bushings- You go over a bump and hear that squeal. Easy! Sway bar bushings and about every 50,000 miles this happens.

Whirring and whining sound upon acceleration
Most of the time this is one of those gear boxes associated with the all wheel drive system. There is the infamous PTU or power transfer unit and the rear differential. The fluid in both should be changed every 30,000 miles. The PTU is more infamous for going bad, but the rear differential takes a bit longer and usually above 100,000 miles. Both should be babied.

Left front door drivers arm-rest disintegrating
Luckily Ford has an armrest available. The best place to find these is at one of these Ford discount parts websites or Ebay. The most expensive place to find it is the local dealership. An interior place can get this done, but the local dealership...after they research it a bit...can get this done.

Catalytic Converters
These go at 80,000 miles give or take. They are considered a wear-away item. Ford became concerned this only lasted 80,000 miles and put an extended warranty on the MKT converters. Not sure if any of those warranties are still valid today. You will have to consult your local dealer.

Shocks/struts
If your MKT came with non-electronic shocks/struts then those will start to go around 40,000 miles. For the rear shocks there is a carpeted area on the quarter trim panel. Do not remove the quarter trim panel but peel the carpeted item away slowly and unsnap it. That is the access panel to the bolt of the rear shocks. When taking to a mechanic go ahead and peel that off because he will try to take out the quarter trim panel and damage the panel.

The Oil Change UnderShield
You will have to remove that pesky undershield when changing the oil. Eventually you will most certainly have to replace the hardware bolts/brackets which attach the shield to the underbody and may have to replace the entire shield itself especially over 100,000 miles. This comes with the territory of such a shield which is removed every time the oil is changed. So, yes, this will eventually be replaced or rebuilt with new bolts/brackets.

Transmission
The transmission is a reliable unit, but must be flushed every 30000 miles at the dealership for it to be reliable. The filter is not serviceable unless you want to remove the entire transmission AND split open the case to get it.

Water in the door
From time to time water gets into the door shells. There are plastic plugs on the bottom of the door. Simply remove them to drain it out...but dont put the plugs back in. The water got in there for a reason and if you put them back in the water will just get in there again.

Any idea why a mechanic is doing wrong replacing my front turbo, it's going to be there 3rd time in a year.

I have a 2016 MKT, and recently noticed the heated steering wheel, only heats towards the sides and bottom, not the top( the 10 and 2 position) and not very warm at all. What is your opinion on this.
That’s probably because nobody teaches the “10 and 2” hand positions for driving anymore… that’s very 1970s.
With airbags it’s dangerous to drive with your forearms overlaying the air bag. 200mph deployment of the bag will snap your arms in two.
Since the 90s, “3 and 9” is recommended and actually since the 2000s, the best hand position is at the “8 and 4” o’clock positions.

I have a 2014 MKT. 122k miles. For some reason i am going through a set of tires every 15-20 thousand miles. This time it is the front. I have had like 4 alignments to no avail. The car runs straight as an arrow. I do get some wheel vibration and am thinking maybe the rims are out of shape. Any thoughts appreciated

rear upper control arms cause vibration when bad.

I have found the weak link on these crossovers and the MKT is always the suspension and bushings. However if it aligns correctly at the dealership there might not be anything wrong with the suspension.. ***There was a rear toe link recall on this vehicle. It is very important to have that recall done and the rear toe links replaced. If the rear toe link breaks the car will spin out of control. High accident potential. Do not delay on that recall***

I look on Consumer Reports and get the tires which last the longest which are usually Michelin.

Hello, I just bought 2014 MKT from a smaller used car dealership. They repair and sell the vehicles there. This particular vehicle came with nice options like adaptive cruise and Split middle seats with cooler box. Anyways, I buy the car and the adaptive cruise control doesn’t work at all. It doesn’t recognize any vehicles at all. Not only that but I also could not find the sensor anywhere. This is understandable as this part is missing as the vehicle is a rebuilt title, the problem is that there are no errors and system engages as if they were no issues. Back up camera also doesn’t work but all other systems work as far as I know. Didn’t try active park yet. But, did someone program it to override and not display errors? Thank you in advance for your help.

I have a MKT 2011 EcoBoost. After it was sitting in the rain for 3, 4 hrs, I noticed water on the passenger front side A-pillar, and it’s slowly dripping. Could you please tell me which drain I need to locate, as it’s likely plugged?
I checked in the morning, and the A-pillar was completely dry. I don't see or feel any wetness in the carpet.
Thanks

2014 lincoln mkt front blower stopped working, rear blows cold. what is the best place to start checking.

I just purchased a 2012 mkt and didn't notice the headlights weren't working until night time when I was trying to drive home. So both of the low beam lights are not working and then one of the high beams is not working. The driver side has no nights other than the parking lights and the passenger side has only the high beam. I checked the fuse for the lights but they seem to be in normal shape. What else can I check because it's not normal for both headlights to be out at the same time. And I think it's odd that the passenger side has a high beam but no low beam but they're the same bulb because they're the HID adaptive bulbs correct? So if it's the same bulb how could one part of the bulb work and the other part not it doesn't make sense to me

I have a 2013 MKT and the FCIM (Front control interface module) keeps cutting out on me. When it goes out the heat is on full blast, fan on high and defroster on. I have no control at all, not the touch screen or the instrument panel. The audio is gone completely, radio, navigation commands, etc. Total silence. The dealer said the FCIM is bad, but they aren’t made anymore. I sent it out to have it repaired, got it back and it worked, for a couple months. Then same thing happens. Sent it out for repair again and it worked again for a couple months. I tried 3 used ones from junk yards and Ebay, and none of them worked at all but when I put mine back in the car, the original one would work again. The last time I unplugged mine again for a few days and it worked when I plugged it in again. This happen to anyone else or anyone have any ideas.

I saw you mentioned about arm rest disintegrating and that's sold separately, do they sell them for the right rear door as well? I found for the driver door but not rear. Mine is bad on the right rear door.
Let me know please, thanks

Where did you find a replacement armrest for the drivers door? I’ve been searching for one unsuccessfully.

I have a question about my 2014 3.5 ecoboost. Transmission will slip out of gear from a stop. Give it gas and it will go back into gear. Service light comes on. Code says it's the shift solenoid. Shop replaced valve body and solenoid pack with new motocraft units and performed it's second trans flush in 2 years.

Trans still does the slip. I think it's electric.

I have 2013 AWD Lincoln MKT Ecoboost. Emits white/blueish. I changed the Turbo (used because I couldn't get a new one). Problem not solved. Car not moving with usual compression.

Monroe Quick Struts...not known to be the greatest for the MKT. Many report issues.

Unfortunately you will have to get Motorcraft off of RockAuto

Tires
Best of the best tires are Continental CrossContact LX25

Transmission
The transmission is a reliable unit, but must be flushed every 30000 miles at the dealership for it to be reliable. The filter is not serviceable unless you want to remove the entire transmission AND split open the case to get it.

Water in the door
From time to time water gets into the door shells. There are plastic plugs on the bottom of the door. Simply remove them to drain it out...but dont put the plugs back in. The water got in there for a reason and if you put them back in the water will just get in there again.

So let me know your MKT questions. Operators are standing by!
On my 2013 mkt there is a little round knob on the lower drivers side of console, roughly in the vicinity of the drivers knee. It turns with about a 270 degree rotation. I can't figure out what it's purpose is. Thank you
