My Lincoln
2022 Aviator
Hello all,
New member here and needing some thoughts. We purchased the Aviator two days ago and are so disappointed with the ride. We traded in our Nautilus that had such an amazing ride. With nobody in the front passenger seat you can see it moving from the vibration and bumbs in the road. From what we were told it would be a better ride not worse.. Any thoughts?

Vehicle model? Configuration? Air suspension or springs?

Hi MLG and welcome to the Lincoln Forums. First...what size wheels do you have. If they are 20"+, a harsher ride is one of the prices we pay to be stylish.

As far as what can be done...The first thing to do is check the tire pressures in all 4 tires. They well may be very high. Overinflated tires will cause a harsh ride.

Although Dealers are supposed to check and adjust the tire pressure as part of the Dealer Prep service (they come overinflated from the factory). it seems many do not.

You need to read the tire pressure placard on the drivers side door sill to see what the recommended pressure is. That is the "recommended cold tire pressure".
Then use a good quality tire pressure gauge to check the pressure in all 4 tires. Ideally, in the early morning, before you drive the vehicle and before the sun is hitting the tires on one side of the car. Then adjust them as necessary.

Do not use the TPMS readout in the Driver Information Center to check and monitor your tire pressures. Use a good quality tire pressure gauge. Lincoln clearly tells us this in the Owners Manual.
If you do not already own one, buy one and keep it in the glove compartment or trunk. You can get one for $10-$15 at any big box automotive store.

If adjusting the tire pressures does not solve the problem, make an appointment with your Dealership to have it checked for issues.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

Thank you so much for the quick response.
We have the 20" wheels but also had 20's on the Nautilus. It is a stiff ride like it is stuck in the Sports mode?
With the shortage of cars we can't find one to compare it to unfortunately. It seems to ride more like a truck (we have an F150) than a Lincoln..

Hi MLG. Then check and adjust the tire pressures. And if there is still a problem after that, set up a service appointment to have your Aviator checked for any suspension or other issues.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

Welcome to the Forum.
Given that the Aviator's wheelbase is 6.9 " longer than the Nautilus, the ride should be better. As suggested, check the tire PSI before doing anything else. I believe the unoccupied passenger seat will always have some vibration since vibrations are transmitted through the body. Mine also moves slightly at times depending upon road conditions. Is it the 2022 Reserve that you have?

Thank you for your reply.
Tire pressure is correct, so checking that off.. The noisy and stiff link describes our issue also. It's interesting they said it could be stuck in sport mode. That is exactly hpw it feels.
We do have the Reserve.

Hi MLG. Out of curiosity, what psi were your tires inflated to? And what is the recommended tire pressure on the Manufacturers door placard?

Good luck.

OK, we have only 1 more idea then back it goes.. Do any of your Aviators have a tow package? We are wondering if the suspension may be stiffer?

Yes, mine does. BTW, the member in the other thread has indicated that after driving the Aviator for a while that the ride appears to be improving.
You may want to try test driving another Aviator to see if it is the same.

We have a reserve with the tow package. Today we finished a 4 hour trip at just under 1000 miles on the odometer. We've had nothing but smooth, quiet riding.

I also have a 2020 aviator and it's been in the shop for the rattling seats and drive control malfunction light. I'm so tired of going to the dealership for this truck. The first one I bought lincoln bought back after two months of having it

Does it have Driving Modes?
I bought a 2022 Nautilus, supposed to have Driving Modes, but the line changed in June and eliminated it. It rides rough too. The suspension that goes with it is changed too.

When did you buy your Nautilus? My dealer told me the line changed in June and Driving Modes was removed...and the adaptive suspension that goes with it.
Mine rides like a truck too...made in June.

I'm sorry the size of the tire cannot be the reason for a rough ride I've had 20 inch rims on 3 of my Ford explorers and the ride was smooth for at least 2 1/2 years then they break down. I turned in my 2019 explorer with busted shocks and rough ride for a 2022 lincoln nautilus reserve and omg I'm embarrassed for anyone to ride my brand new car the ride is ridiculously rough almost dangerous at high speed. My daughter's 2020 kona has a smoother ride. I wondered why Dana Ford/lincoln in Staten Island NY had lots of cars now I'm thinking they used cheaper parts because of supply issues even the wiper blades are cheap quality. I can say this as I'm 57 had many many cars new and old starting with Chevy nova and now a lincoln without exaggeration theses shocks are the worst ever on a new vehicle.

Hi Cojado and welcome to the Lincoln Forums. No need to apologize. However, since you quote my post for some reason, I will explain: I was not saying the tires are definitely the issue, definitely part of the issue, or anything else in particular.

We are working blind over the Internet. None of us are there with the OP to experience what they are experiencing. So all we can do is make suggestions which eliminate as many variables as possible. And larger wheels can be a possible issue/variable. And severely overinflated tires are also one of the variables which can easily be checked by a vehicle owner, as opposed to suspension issues etc. Especially electronic suspensions, when applicable.

Then, once all the owner verifiable issues are checked off the list...If there is still a problem once all the blind Internet variables are eliminated (as best as possible), a Dealer service visit will be necessary.

Hope that clears up the confusion about my previous replies.

Good luck.

21" and 20" will definitely give you a harder ride than an 18". I have experienced the difference before when going to 18" winter tires from 20" OEM tires. The 18" tire has more sidewall flex to absorb bumps, uneven pavement etc. A 21" has very little sidewall to do the same thing.

I'm going to disagree in the context of a factory suspension - regardless of tire size - will be as smooth as they wish it to be. They can and do make 21" tires ride silky smooth just as well as a 16" tire. There are quite a few components in the entire suspension that contribute to harshness; several in the tire alone (belt design, belt material, number of plies, etc.).

The harshness of the ride described by MLG85 is a problem - plain and simple. These cars are designed to have very supple rides. If they don't - something is amiss. Our standard reserve suspension is silky smooth.

He should be able to simply go to the dealership, get in another Aviator (same trim/suspension) and back to back see the difference. No way these things ride that bad as designed by the factory.
