Pirelli tires - what to expect

2024 Nautilus Premier Hybrid (Sheila)
My vehicle has 20 inch Pirelli Scorpion MS tires. I have never owned Pirellis as I have been a Michelin fan for years. I did some searching and these are OEM tires for car manufacturers and do not seem to be mainstream replacements. The Pirelli site mentions ELECT technology so for hybrids but gives no clue on what that provides (rolling resistance, etc).

There are few comments online (tirerack, etc) but some state Pirelli's are soft (meaning short tread life). So, far I have no complaints on noise, ride, and handling. My preference is low ride and noise. Even tire wear, balance, etc remain to be seen. If I had an issue (like nail in side), these would have to be special ordered.

On three different SUVs / crossovers, I put on Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3. I love them. How those compare to the MS though, I don't know.

I had the AS Plus 3s on my last one and got only 13,000 miles out of them. It had AS 2s before than and got around 17k miles. OEMs were Continentals and I much preferred them overall. The Pirellis had less general road noise and had great dry traction, ok wet traction and fair snow/ice traction. They chirp much louder if you break traction though. The continentals had a bit more road noise but better snow/ice traction, similar wet and good dry traction but made no noise when they broke loose.

That is really strange. Those are 70,000 tires. Were you able to make a warranty claim?

Nope, warranty on tread life is a lie.. You cant prove your driving behavior and they just claim it was driven harder than average. Alot of my wear was at the outer edge. Fought with the dealership about alignments too. I did drive a bit more spirited than most but those tires wore much faster than any others I have owned.
 
I checked the manual and looks like Lincoln recommends rotation with front to rear and rear cross to front. I see some recommendations that AWD to do 4 wheel cross. Pirelli recommends rearward cross (front cross to rear) for AWD,

I have never spent so much time reading a car manual.
 
Don't know everyone else's experience, but for me, Pirelli tires don't last long at all. I have had very good luck with Hankook and Cooper in the past -- all of them on AWD vehicles with the exception of the Cooper's on my F150.

The Pirelli site says newer Scorpion tires are updated with new rubber to improve tread life for North American market. The MS is rated at 50k so likely not more than 30 to 35k.

So the manual states the importance of rotating tires "at the recommended interval." But it doesn't say what that interval is. Does anyone know??

Were the instruction on Toyo or Yokohama tires too?

I plan to rotate at 7500 or earlier.
 
Since I often have to get a new tire due to a punction in the area where they refuse to patch, I decided to check prices. These tires cost $450+ (price off tirerack.com) for similar sizes. I searched dealers including Ford/Lincoln and they do not offer the size. The worse is that I cannot find a US seller of my size 255/55/20. It seems to be a new tire.

The price is due to the ELECT rating that indicates special compounding for rolling resistance,

My hybrid R3 has Michelin Primacy All Season on it from the factory. Michelin also makes the Primacy Tour A/S in my size (255/50/R21) which I guess is supposed to be a better tire.

Hi jeffcarp. If you go to the Tire Rack website and input your vehicle information, you can compare those two tires (and others if you wish). And yes, the Primacy Tour A/S does have better ratings than the Primacy A/S overall.

However, are you sure your tires are 255/55-21? It seems Tire Rack lists them as 255/50-21.

Good catch. 55 was a typo. They are 50s.

A comment that the brand of tires has more to do with the size of the wheels than it does the trim.

Btw, regarding the Pirelli's, I used to adore short-tread sticky tires. They can be so fun to drive. But I don't see much use for them on a vehicle like the Nautilus. You can get quiet tires with good tread wear, rolling resistance and yet good wet/dry/snow performance. But they typically aren't the discount tires.
 
The Pirelli's seem quiet on some roads but on old asphalt they are much noisier.
