Phone As A Key PAAK Woes

I'm curious to see the statistics on Lincolns that flat out completely fail electrically so as to only allow the key to enter and then magically start with the fob.

Not true. If you have programmed the door code and backup passcodes, you will have no issue.
Are backup pass-codes stored in the phone or elsewhere? If in the phone then that won't help.
You mentioned that the phone will act the same as the keyfob. My phone will lock/unlock the doors and start the engine but only if I use the actual buttons on the Lincoln Way app. Approaching the locked vehicle with the phone on me does nothing.

Have you set up PAAK? If not, then the phone will do nothing. If you have, and it does nothing, your RFA module needs to be re-flashed.

I don't know what you mean by storing codes. Are you asking how the vehicle knows the codes? You set them up in the vehicle and it stores them that way. If you are asking how I know what my codes are, yes, I have them written down in my iOS Notes. I would only need the code(s) if my PAAK is not being detected by the vehicle. In the last 3-4 weeks since my RFA module was re-flashed, that has never happened. Happened all the time prior to that and also in my 2020 I used to own.

Peter, I am in no way trying to convince you to use PAAK and not carry a fob. I am just saying that since my RFA module was "fixed", it has been extremely reliable. I have not carried my fob in 3-4 weeks.

Thank you for the explanation. The concierge at my dealership set up the PAAK and as mentioned, I can perform all the functions of the Lincoln Wat app by using the displayed buttons on the phone but that is it. I will be making an appointment in the next few weeks to have the winter tires installed and will ask them about the RFA module re-flash. Appreciate the info.

OK...I am new to all this. When you say "door code", are you referring to to the keypad on the door pillar? What would be the purpose of "backup" passcode(s)?

Yes. The backup passcode allows you to start the vehicle if the PAAK device is not detected. Same for the door code. Allows access to the vehicle if things go awry with PAAK.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: …. Ok…

Yes, the door code is the code you put into the door pillar to unlock the car. The backup passcode is a separate code that is used if there is ever an issue with the PAAK system. That code allows you to start the car and drive it. You need both codes to get into the car and then drive it.

Thanks Black Label for your explanation! This is a good thread, learned something!

tgara, yes, I am a Lincoln newbie, so to speak! I was a Lincoln Dealer mechanic many lifetimes ago (1976-1980) at Eastman Lincoln-Merc in Greenwich Connecticut. Back then, a few old time customers had vintage lincoln convertibles, as you have pictured in your signature! The shop foreman showed me how to diagnose the quirky convertible & and door handle push button window drop mechanisms! Tools needed were a test light, schematic, and a fine flat bladed file set for servicing & adjusting the relays.
The last Lincolns I was schooled on (back then Ford had a training facility in White Plains NY) was the 1980 Mark VI. Never owned a Lincoln myself till I purchased my 1998 Mark VIII. The keyless entry pad system was introduced on Lincolns' in 1980 as I recall. I have it on my 98 Mark. That I am familiar with. Of course, back in the day if you used the door keypad to enter the vehicle and had no key on you, that was a far as you got...no starting without a key...great feature if you locked the key in the vehicle to begin with (remember, when FOBS came on the scene, they were not "smart"). The surprise for me with my 2023 Lincoln is the backup passcode to start the vehicle! Now that's really neat..! (you may substitute the slang that best fits the generation you were brought up in);)

Speaking of 1980 door entry keypad technology, customers hardly used the door keypad. If used, it was more likely to open the trunk. We used it more often at the dealership to assist customers who locked the keys in their car! It saved time & money over having to cut a key for them. Back then, Eastman Lincoln made "house calls" to loyal customers to assist them with vehicle servicing. "Concierge" service was a call to the service manager or your salesman for such assistance. We called it a courtesy back then. "Black Label" was something you shopped for at a liquor store!

Sorry, I don't see a Lincoln convertible in my signature picture... 😎

The boss literally hates the Aviator so I am running out of time. It's a very comfortable car (seats/air suspension/etc.) but the tech is horrendous. PAAK worked fine on both of our phones, but it would never return her to the proper seating position. I noticed that my profile disappeared recently even though everything else worked fine. I created my profile and it would disappear every time I started the car. Lastly, the screen would randomly go black and/or the navigation would not load. She had enough so I performed a hard reset which resulted in a black screen for 15-20 minutes until it finally started up. I was able to create a profile and it would save as expected. But, I noticed it would not save my profile to my phone AND key. I believe this was due to PAAK configuration being removed. I deleted the profile and went through the process and EVERY single time I set up PAAK, the app would error w/ pairing failure. I spent 45 minutes with Lincoln Support via phone and performed the following:

Hard reset
Rebooted iPhone
Remove Aviator from bluetooth
Removed phones from Aviator bluetooth list
Reinstalled the Lincoln app
Updated to latest 3.4.3188 version

Same pairing error over and over. Lincoln Support said the latest version would fix all of this. It didn't.
Did you ever get your PAAK issue resolved? If so, what fixed it?

Thanks. For the benefit of others, I thought I'd ask since I have a very similar issue. My PAAK stopped working out of the blue on my 2020 Aviator a couple months ago and I'm pretty motivated to get it fixed. When I get in the vehicle, the app on my Pixel 7 switches back and forth between connected and disconnected, and it won't start without the fob. I called the concierge and they walked me through the whole removal of the app and reset of PAAK, etc. Now the app fails to complete setup every time I try it, but ironically I get a notification in the app saying PAAK is enabled for my phone during setup before it fails. I think there's something wrong with the low energy Bluetooth antenna/module for PAAK preventing my phone from actually communicating via low energy Bluetooth with that module. I'm not sure if that's also called the RFA module, but I did find two SSMs (49968 and 50845) that I shared with the dealer when scheduling my appointment, so I'll circle back with whatever they find. For completeness, my remote start and door locks work great through the app and Bluetooth phone connection, Android Auto, and music all works great, so its just the PAAK connection that refuses to connect.

Same issue with my Pixel 7 on my 2022. Been through all the steps with concierge too. Now wondering if Pixel 7 possibly has a unique issue?? Please keep posting on anything you find. Thanks!

Will do as both my wife and I have Pixel 7s.

Alright - now all of you folks have me interested. Neither my wife or I use the feature but conveniences are ofttimes nice to take advantage of.

Seeing some talk of various details, setup requirements and the like, is there a good reference source to read to completely and properly set it up? I think I may give it a try.

I would use the help feature in the Lincoln Way app and connect to them. They will walk you through it and are usually very good at their jobs.

We are doomed. I followed the instructions and could not get past the first step in the Lincoln Way app. After calling concierge, being transferred to the Lincoln Way App team, doing many checks on my phone, resets of features, etc. The 4th time the woman put me on hold she told me my car is not compatible with Phone as a Key.

I'm trying to verify that I can't find any data that shows which trim levels did or did not have it in 2022. Any input here?

2022 Dealer Order Guide shows PAAK standard on Reserve (201A) and Grand Touring (301A).
