Town Car Dash removal for actuator replacement

I just called my trusted mechanic this morning, and asked his wife to get me a quote to do this miserable job on my 2006 Designer. I told her no hurry. I won't actually need this garage queen again till July. Just got back from a Memorial weekend trip, without A/C flow from the front panels. I've already ordered Motorcraft YH1753, YH1754 and YH1755 actuators from Rock Auto for about $20 each.

Trying to get up the courage to go at it myself. If my mechanic's quote is low enough, $400 or so, he can have the job. But, the more I read "Sparky's Answers", the better I feel about doing it myself. If I do it, I'll have to make some kind of donation!

Looking for a little encouragement to give it a shot. I love this car. So much so, that I bought a 2006 Signature Limited for a daily driver. I always mention how cheap and easy they are to repair, but I gotta admit this issue is a little daunting. Maybe it's time to get this under my belt. I'm going to own these cars as long as possible, and it's bound to happen again.

BTW, off topic, but I was a little surprised I didn't see any other Town Cars on this last trip. 3-1/2 hours coming and going, and hundreds and hundreds of cars in Hocking Hills where we stayed. It was PACKED there! Don't really care who else sees the value in these cars. I've got mine, and that's all that matters to me, but it was surprising.

Edit 05/29/19: Well, it's 1:30PM and the Steering Column and Dash are on the floor in my garage. Video taped as much as possible, but my phone ran out of memory at some point. Uploading to my PC as I type. No narration. I'll add captions later. Biggest struggle was with the steering column cover! Also, some of the electrical clips were a pain to release. I'll add links to video if it's worthwhile, and I can edit something together. Just waiting for my DSL actuators delivery now...

This set of procedures is intended to help replace the panel/defrost and floor mode door actuators (small electric motors with a position sensing capability) as a result of an EATC self test with codes 1263 and 1264 respectively on a 2007 model Town Car. This should be the same for the 2003 and up models, but there may be variations. These models use 5 electronic actuators, but only the panel/defrost and floor mode door actuators need the dash to be removed for replacement. The 2 blend door actuators and the air inlet mode door actuator can be replaced easily without removing the dash. I have included all the actuator replacement procedures in the event that you may want to do all 5 at the same time and be done with them.

Town, I have a question regarding the actuators and part numbers.
Rock Auto lists 5 Motorcraft parts as follows

  • MOTORCRAFT YH1756-Recirculation
  • MOTORCRAFT YH1755-Floor Mode
  • MOTORCRAFT YH1753 -Blend
  • MOTORCRAFT YH1754-Defrost Mode
  • MOTORCRAFT YH1768-Located At Inlet Door; Main unit w/ATC
From your post, I can match up the Floor Mode, Defrost Mode, and Blend actuators.
You mention an "air inlet mode door actuator" which I assume is the last one.
However, that leave the recirculation actuator. Is that a sixth actuator somewhere or is it actually one of the 2 blend doors?

Paging Mr. @Town

Don't get your hopes up though @HighwayStar, Town moved on past Town Car's a while back it seems. He really has a lot of good info on these forums though, I know his posts have personally helped me out.

I also thought the floor/recirc was the same actuator, pretty sure there are only 4 total, at least I thought I was sure until you posted these part numbers :)
