Ticking noise

After my engine warms up I’m getting a quiet ticking noise from the engine it sounds like it’s coming from the top of the engine I can’t tell if it’s a lifter or the fuel injectors it rides great and when I’m driving it goes away it does it worst at idle it’s not very loud but if you don’t have the radio on or no other noises going on you can hear it. It is a 2007 town car.

More than likely it is an exhaust leak at the manifold. The aluminum heads expand differently than the cast iron manifolds and pop studs or just cause leaks. If studs are broken, it's a bear.

Town Cars never came with the 5.4, FYI.

Meaning it's a total pain to remove broken exhaust manifold bolts.

Get yourself a mechanics stethoscope (harbor freight) or a long screwdriver and try to isolate where the sound is exactly coming from. We can only guess.

I agree, exhaust manifold leak. I had my passenger side replaced by an exhaust shop in my local area. $500.00 it cost me. That was parts and labor, new manifold, new gasket, new studs, and a new EGR tube with new hoses.

Generally exhaust manifold leaks get quiet after the engine warms up, my experience anyway. As the metal expands.

Most of the time it won't expand enough to warrant an exhaust manifold gasket leak, a crack perhaps , in my case, I had both , the manifold had a crack and the gasket was protruded from the firewall end. I bit the bullet and paid my mechanic to do the job after I assessed the labor involved and aggravation factor in my driveway, I couldn't get the money out of the bank fast enough.....

I thought it was a decent price, especially with all new parts, couldn't pay him fast enough after addressing the aggravation factor involved with me DIY....

It's still the same design, just smaller....... right ??? Triton 3 valve engine ?

It is the same engine family. Ford Modular Engine family. About 6 engine displacements from 4.6 l to the V-10 of 6.8l.

Both 4.6l and 5.4l came in 3 value and 4 valve configurations. Along with single OH and dual OH cams. Ford used this engine platform to power a lot of different vehicles, with HP ranges from 190 to over 400. (Over 800 in some special applications)

In addition, that engine family was always a loud engine with lots of noises that were normal. Heck it has two chains in the front that are a mile long. (OK so I exaggerated the length) Those chains are not quiet compared to other engines.

All CVs, GMs, and TCs came with the 4.6L 2v, except the Marauder which I believe was a 4v configuration.

Yep. Pain in the butt to fix is what I meant by it being a bear. J got it.

Guys, I suspect that my hydraulic lifters are knocking. no one is ticking, but the sound comes from all and looks like a grasshopper chirping or something like that. I have a 2007 town car. Can this engine really react like that to an oil change from 5w20 to 5w30? The first thing I'm going to do is change the oil filter.
