paint problem on our new 2022 aviator

we had our aviator 3 weeks and at the car wash i noticed the paint was coming off of the hood

made an appointment with dealership they looked at it and said that they will have to send this info to Lincoln

to be authorized on what to do next

it is disturbing to see that a few other people have seen this issue with the paint

lets see where we go

Hi buddy and welcome to the Lincoln Forums. Defects sometimes occur. That is what the warranty is for. It is a bit more common nowadays, due to the hoods and certain other body panels being made of aluminum and/or composite materials.

And please understand I am not minimizing your frustrations. I would feel the same way as you, if it happend with my new vehicles.

It is true that the Dealer must send in photos, get approval from Lincoln for a repair such as this etc. A Lincoln warranty rep may even want to inspect the vehicle in order to determine what caused the defect, in order to ensure this type of problem is avoided in the future.

Either way, it is a simple fix for a good body shop, which I am relatively sure your Dealer either has or works with.

Frustrating, yes. But it will be taken care of, if that is any consolation.

The 5th gen Explorer suffered a lot from bubbles on the leading edge of the hood. I hadn't heard/read if Lincoln has the same issue.

In the case of the Explorer, it had nothing to do with QC. It was a problem with the initial preparation of the hood itself and usually took a couple years or more to develop the bubbles. Starting with the 2016 model, a 5 year, unlimited warranty was added for aluminum panel corrosion.

Makes sense. I can see a few years for paint issues. However, this case seems a little soon. OP hasn't even has his a month if we are to take what is being claimed here at face value. As with other issues reported here, I'll just come back often to see how this plays out.

Could be something went wrong in pre-paint work like someone leaving a handprint and their body oil causing the paint to lose adhesion.
That happened on my Silverado. Where the paint came off the rear door it looked like someone had pushed it shut with two fingers. The body shop said that was the likely scenario.

A late Welcome to the Forum.
It would appear that it was likely bad/incomplete preparation prior to painting. It should be made right without any cost to you by the dealer's body shop. They will likely have to strip and repaint the hood.

Hi buddy. Sounds as though the area was contaminated and not properly prepped before painting, leading to bad paint adhesion.

It will be addressed under warranty.

Frustrating I know. But it will be taken care of.

At the risk of being defamed - did the consideration of Chicago come into play with your statement?

I've worked with industries long enough to know that even within the same corporation, different manufacturing facilities have their own culture/pride of quality that can unfortunately vary quite a bit. I'm guilty of correlating things like Crime statistics in an area to a general blue collar labor force success rate. I'm not trying to profile or generalize; just state simple statistics. These are not rocket scientists doing the assembly; I would think an environment like that area puts unique challenges on management to oversee and ensure meeting corporate quality requirements as well as production stats. No harm meant with this, just a simple association of realities.

If only that same retrofit quality control warranty could have been applied to my 2012 Expedition I could have saved $940 repainting my rear hatch last year due to the galvanic corrosion issues (of aluminum) bubbling the paint. Other than 2 miniscule spots on the hood - all else (paint/finish wise) is still great today.

Hi Nicole. The OP has not signed in since late July of 2022, so it is questionable as to whether they will reply.

However...If you are having a similar issue with an aluminum body panel, and are wondering what to do, here are a few thoughts: If your vehicle is still within the 5 year/Unlimited mileage aluminum body panel corrosion warranty, call the Service Department at your Lincoln Dealer and schedule a service appointment.

They will take photos to send to Lincoln. As long as the corrosion was not caused by damage, negligence etc., the problem will be corrected under warranty.

WE are having the same problem with our 22 Nautilus...Lincoln has refused to fix the paint issue.
