New Windshield Cost

I had to replace the windshield in our 20' Explorer ST before we traded it in. It was replaced with a genuine Ford windshield because of all of the features like rain sensing wipers, auto dimming etc. The total cost was around $700. which included the installer using a special computer to re-align all of the special features required when replacing a windshield. It took him just under an hour, start to finish, the installation being done in our driveway. State Farm covers all windshield replacements 100% in Florida, so installing glass company got paid directly from them. Considering the Aviator also has "Heads UP" projected on to the windshield, It is extremely important to get the correct windshield so "Heads UP" works properly. One should definitely request/require any replacement be a Ford windshield designed for Aviator "Heads UP" usage.

It would depend if it's equipped with heads up display. I'd say the majority are not. My mom's well-equipped Reserve with 202A does not have it.

I always get a little leary when I hear the words "Just as good". I believe all the glass Lincoln uses contributes to their "Sanctity" advertising.

The Safelite windshield was acoustic glass. The nearest Ford certified glass installer is 155 miles away; Safelite is 2.6 miles away.

I love HUDS, wont buy a car again without it. Too bad there isnt a missile lock feature. That would be sweet for all those that stare at their phones at traffic lights and cause the 10 second delay from moving because ya know its all about them!!

Don’t forget the $1000 for the dealer to recalibrate the car (from the alignment to cameras). The more modern the car the more integrated things are.

If you are referring to recalibration after the windshield replacement, Safelite does that when they replace your windshield.

@peterk9 the safelite way is incomplete, if you have active glide (blue cruise). The calibration has to start with a wheel alignment, then headlights, then camera, then some type of a software alignment- if not done this way the car will not sit on the highway right.

I personally only want OEM glass. @Wolfepack88 there are three different glass part numbers (no hud, hud, black label). Black label has hud so it must be the sound insulation, and tinting, personally I’d get the black label version.

Neither of my Lincolns have active glide. Now you’ve given me another reason to avoid it in the future. I prefer to drive the car myself anyway.
My Corsair has intelligent cruise. It needs improvement.

Ah, that reminds me of one great feature my former '23 Sportage Hybrid had - an alert for when the vehicle in front of it pulled away from a stop. Every vehicle should have that feature.

What would be better is an alert to tell the driver that the traffic light has turned green.

None of that would be required if the driver was alert and paying attention to his/her surroundings. We are already becoming too dependent on electronic systems.

My '21 Niro was a nice car. Didn't really have issues during my 10 months of ownership. The '23 Sportage Hybrid was riddled with issues, requiring a transmission replacement around 4k miles, and the replacement was acting up. There were other problems, too. I filed a lemon law case, and Kia gave me a partial refund. My dealer bought it from me, since the official word from their service department was "no issues found." Our '21 Rio has been fine, other than our insurance premiums jumped in light of the easy thefts.

Far less than $1000. It's a simple (less than 1 hour) job for the technician. All automatic.

Yes I have full glass coverage with no deductible so for me it cost me zero and just covered 5 years of the full glass premiums. Agree when I order contacts most of the time its substantially cheaper without insurance. This is why car insurance and health insurance premiums are so high due to the rampant fraud committed in this country. Like when you go to a hospital and the tylenol they give you costs $60. We are paying for the free health care and those that don't pay anything. They have to cover the costs of the overhead which is expensive, nurses, doctors, technicians, etc cost a pretty penny. Every single item they use is bar coded and scanned when they use it.

As for the windshield there are some other minor parts used in the installation, such as gel packs and adhesive. Any Peter the windshield you reference is for the base model, the same part number but with a D vs C at the end for the grand touring pushes the price up to $612.

One should definitely request/require any replacement be a Ford windshield designed for Aviator "Heads UP" usage.

Good call on having full glass coverage—it pays off in situations like this. Windshield replacements with ADAS recalibration can be pricey, so for anyone without coverage, it's worth checking your policy or considering adding it. Small chips can sometimes be repaired before they spread, but once they spider web like yours, replacement is the only option.

Just as I am preparing to move on from my Aviator, I have what is now the third chip in my windshield. The first I let go, as it was too small. The second I had repaired at Safelite via my insurance company, and now this one is a legit circular crack that started off as a large chip. Overnight it morphed. It will require a full replacement. Insurance scheduled appointment at Safelite. I am more worried about the calibration than anything. The hope is they get it right.
