New Windshield Cost

Just as I am preparing to move on from my Aviator, I have what is now the third chip in my windshield. The first I let go, as it was too small. The second I had repaired at Safelite via my insurance company, and now this one is a legit circular crack that started off as a large chip. Overnight it morphed. It will require a full replacement. Insurance scheduled appointment at Safelite. I am more worried about the calibration than anything. The hope is they get it right.

I asked the local dealership to replace my windshield, they asked me to directly connect with the local shop they use, and the shop put in an OEM windshield. I picked the car up, drove to the dealership where a loaner was waiting for me. The dealership then did the calibration. All paid by insurance - nothing out of my pocket.

I have done the same on my wife’s 2016 MKZ hybrid and on my former BMW X3 for chips that led to cracks on the front windshields.

Used safelite once. Incredibly unimpressed! Refuse to use them again.

When in factory warranty, I'll NEVER use a 3rd party member for service - regardless of if it's paid by Ford/Lincoln. This is because if something's done wrong by the 3rd party - the finger pointing game starts if there are ever issues later.

I had an experience like this years ago with my Genesis. They didn't have a body shop; I needed the rear bumper repaired. The Kia store across the street (new owners - used to be Lincoln) had the same old body shop - they were good. I took it to them for the bumper repairs and paint. Notwithstanding their prior good work (under different ownership), I insisted for the bumper sensors, it go across the street to Genesis for that work and they would coordinate with insurance. They whined, I insisted. It went to Genesis for that scope.

Sure enough, some time later there was an issue with one of the sensors (I was still under my factory warranty) - the Genesis dealership started balking at warranty coverage with the excuses game not to repair because obviously someone else had painted and repaired the bumper. I smiled and pulled out my Genesis receipt showing they, in fact did the sensor repair when painted. They sheepishly backed down and fixed the problem.

They are all sleezebags.

Appreciate the good information from previous experiences. This is supposed to be an all day thing at Safelite tomorrow. I am going to drop it off this evening where I will ask specifically for OEM glass. For whatever that is worth. The hope is by tomorrow evening, I will have good news to report.

Yes, unfortunately at the age of 67, I've experienced way, way, way to much ineptitude, unprofessional business, unscrupulous ethics and outright fraud. It's a shame our legal system doesn't have a way to deal with such unethical behavior.
