Try the Glock 21. They\'ve got a fatter grip than the 9mm and .40 models (too fat for my hands). They\'re chambered in .45ACP, hold 13 rounds in the magazine (plus one in the pipe), and are pretty reliable. Most glocks are more accurate than the people that shoot them. If your going into LE there\'s about a 70 percent chance of using a glock on duty anyway.

I recently sold a barely used one that had a few extra magazines and night sites for $550. New, they\'re under $600, and you\'ll probably have enough money left over for another mag or two and a box of ammo. Magazines are pretty cheap, $25 is on the high side of normal, and when it comes to how many mags you should have, I have one simple rule. Take how many you think you need, and double it. That\'s the minimum number of magazines you should have, and more wouldnt hurt.

BA/UU/R (buy ammo, use up, repeat).

Ok excellent, I will check that out. I have heard a lot about how the glocks will have stove pipe jams, and other issues. I was worried about that, but then I was reading how its recoil system is setup. I would imagine a lot of the loading issues have to do with people that limp wrist the gun, or atleast that was my conclusion. Thanks for the info, when I can afford one I will go for the .45 model, probably 3 to 4 magazines, and a bunch of ammo. I don\'t remember if the shop had one I could test fire, I know they had ones for sale.. I will check tomorrow..

thats a good rule! so if i think i need 12, i should get 24 eh.... sounds good

The glock 21, should I get the compensated model? I don\'t really know why Iw ould need that, I just figured I would ask. If its to lower recoil, I don\'t think I will have to worry about that..

Also one other question, although I know you may not have an answer. In law enforcment, are you allowed to pick your weapon for most departments (within reason)?. I know that a lot of the local departments want the officers to carry say a glock. I would have to have a gun that is comfortable, and I know that a lot of the glocks have too small of a grip for my hands. If I have to carry a gun, it sure as hell better fit my hand, unless I want to risk my own life. Hopefully if your supposed to carry a glock, you can carry something like a 21, not just one of the smaller ones..

If you have to ask yourself why you need it, you dont need it (of course, if you just want it...).

My advice: Forget the compensated model. For a serious competion gun, they\'re okay. But for duty or carry, I wouldnt have them, and dont, on any of my pistols. The flames coming out of the ports look cool, but they\'re hell on your vison at night. Not to mention that if you have to fire with the pistol close to your body, the flames may hit your clothes, setting them on fire, or even worse, your face.

Different departments have different rules regarding the duty sidearms. You\'d be better off asking someone that works for the department. If I started listing examples of weapons policies this could get to be a very long post (it actually was a long post, but I trimmed it).

Ok I fired a glock 21, and I can\'t say I like it. The grip is nice and fat, which is a plus. The first finger grove is cut to small, I felt like my middle finger was being pinched, I would have to either take material off the trigger guard, or the grip for it to fit better. It shot pretty nice, but the mags were a bitch to get the last round in. It was only a 10 round mag I was working with. Is that typical? I am not to impressed with it, but it has given me some more to think about.

I am going to try a HK .45 next week, more then what I really want to spend, but if it fits my hand I will be sold. I think what its going to take is a lot of trial and error. I think the right gun will find me, I will know when I hold it.

I hate the finger grooves too. If your only problem is the finger grooves, find a second generation, they dont have them (link) (another link, better pics). However, they dont have a light rail either. If you want a light rail, the finger grooves are easy to file off and the front strap is easily stippled. The hard part would be bringing yourself to do it.

It might be just as hard to get the last round in a 13 round magazine (I dont know, I\'ve never loaded one), but FWIW I dont have any trouble with the last round in my Glock 17, with either my 17 round mag or one of my 33 round mags. However, the 14th round is stubborn with the Para P14 mags I use in my kimber, so stubborn that I only load them to 13 rounds. The springs last longer as well (which is the main reason I dont load them to capacity).

The HK isnt a bad choice, unless you consider the price, which is more than you want to spend. It is a good sized pistol, even the \"compact\" version is pretty big IMO.

And yes, it takes trial and error.

You could ask for advice at www.thehighroad.org rather than just me. Not that I mind, but there are a lot of guys over there who know a lot more than I do.

Thanks for all the info.. Also, what do you think of the S&W 1911? The ones that are right around 900 to 1,000... I have never held a 1911, so I don\'t know how well it would fit my hands.

Ohh damn, S&W has a 2 free mag deal going on. I bet I could pick up a 1911 for 900$, then send in the order for the 2 free mags.

I love 1911s. I have six. No smiths though.

A 1911 may be a little too small for your hand, however you aint gonna beat the trigger with any other semi-auto pistol, unless of course, its a 1911 that\'s had a trigger job. You could try a double-stack from Para Ordnace. Also, the odds of using a 1911 as a duty gun are pretty slim, which was a big turnoff for me when I was considering LE.

A few things turn me off of smith 1911s. The big \"SW1911\" billboard on the side of the slide being one. Another is the \"warning: gun will fire with magazine removed.\" Now, I hate mag disconnects, but they make it sound like the lack of one on their 1911 is a bad thing. If I want to read a warning lable on my gun, I\'ll buy a ruger. They also use a .220 radius on the frame tangs, most other companies use a .250. I\'m also not a big fan of external extractors, of course, I can properly tune an internal extractor (or I\'ve been lucky;)). These are small gripes, but big enough that I cant justify spending the money on one.

However, in terms of quality, they make very nice pistols. The SW1911\'s reputation is simular to the series I kimbers, damn near flawless. Unlike kimber, SW is selling their guns with good magazines. They appear to be Novak mags, which I\'ve heard good things about. However, I use seven round wilson magazines almost exclusively, and since I havent had any problems with them, I really havent tried anything else.

After checking out Para-Ordnance\'s website, I found something that seems quite intriguing. Here are its specs:

Item # PX1445E MSRP 855.00
Mfg Para-Ordnance Quantity 1
Model PXT Stealth P14 High Capacity Caliber 45AP
Type Semi-Automatic Pistol Finish Black
Additional Specifications
Action: Single Action
Stock: Black Plastic Grips
Receiver: Steel
Capacity: 14+1
# of Mags: 2
Safety: Extended Thumb Safety, Beavertail Grip Safety
Sights: 3-Dot Dovetailed
Barrel Length: 5\" Ramp Barrel
Overall Length: 8.5\"
Weight: 40 oz
Add\'l Features 1: Power Extractor, Competition Hammer
Add\'l Features 2: Full-length Guide Rod

And much to my surprize, the local firearms dealer happens to have one in stock for around 750 (I assume thats new). I like the big magazine capacity, and I am not worried about using it for a service pistol. The price ok, I ought to be able to get it and some ammo, and everything else I need and be under 900. Well I know what I am going to check out tomorrow...

This is the finish I like...
