My Lincoln
2024 Nautilus Reserve II Hybrid
I was considering putting my Genius5 in the engine bay. I checked, and NOCO says not to do that. They say the unit is not built to withstand the vibration and heat in an automobile. I installed a charger in the motorcoach for the chassis battery. I used it for years without a problem, nonetheless, they say no. I did find, coincidentally, that NOCO makes a unit called the Genius 2D that can be installed in the engine bay. Has anyone installed one and if so, how long ago and is it working fine for you? I noted that the 2D is only a two-amp charger.

Well I did it. I will say there is very little usable space under the hood of my Hybrid. I tried or tested a few places I thought might work but soon gave up on each spot I tried. I almost threw in the towel when my eye caught a small spot on the core support. I did some poking around and found I could get it in there. I used zip ties, so no drilling. I'll attach some pics in case anyone wants to know more. Oddly when I was at the dealer for something else, I asked about the charger and if that might be an issue regarding the warranty from Lincoln. She said no, not at all and added that she wished more customers would install battery tenders. Apparently, they are seeing drained batteries regularly. Leaving keys close enough to the car to have constant contact is one of the problems she mentioned. A faraday box solved that for me.

My dealer recommended a battery maintainer for my Father’s Nautilus for those same reasons. I hope to install one soon, but the options for running the power cord seem limited.

I mounted mine with the charger in the engine compartment. On the Genius 2D, the AC cord is short, so finding room to stow it is simpler. I had the car in for service last week and asked them to look the charger over and let me know if this was going to be a warranty issue. They said no, it would not interfere with the warranty. These cars are frequently active when parked. I hear mine click and bump all the time. It's no wonder the chassis battery drains after days in the garage. If you hang a reel-mounted ac cord from the ceiling (near the garage opener) it's simple to pull it down and plug in the AC cord from the charger. For me, the hood up position is a clear reminder that the charger is plugged in and I can't just jump in the car and take off. As I get older, that's actually a real risk.

Note: I have one key on the other side of the house, out of contact range. Her copy of the key is closer to the car but in a Faraday Box. My car stays active because I have my phone set as a third key. As I work around the garages with the phone in my pocket, I hear the car making noises.

Also, using phone as a key can also be a source of battery drain since the phone will connect with the vehicle when in Bluetooth range.

I turned off all approach light features since I am rarely out after dark and no value in the garage. I keep the vehicle locked. If I need lights, I just press the unlock button.
