2018 Nav engine knocking at start-up

I received the same notification as Okladoug.

My 2018 Reserve is going in for service tomorrow for this recall. Supposed to take about 45 minutes. I've already had the cam phasers replaced on it. Still rattling though.

Same here. Let us know what the outcome for you. I had mine scheduled took it in and they said the software wasnt available yet. There were other software updates that needed to be done also

At 80K and 2 years, the cam phaser rattle returned louder than before. Trying to get service scheduled

I took my '19 Navi in a couple of weeks ago to have the Cam Phasers replaced (had developed quite the rattle). Smooth as silk now, but I have noticed that it turns over a bit longer now before it fires up. I just assumed that was part of the software fix.

Bear in mind, that is just an assumption.

Dropped my 18 off last Monday at shop. Not sure when it will be ready for pick up

Unless you left it there without an appointment hoping they would slide it into any available time slot, it should not be there that long. The Cam Phaser replacement is a day and half job. I dropped mine off on a Wed evening right before closing and picked it up Friday afternoon.

Final report on my cam rattle resolution

Ford forced dealer to try programing first. After several attempts, Tech figured out My Gateway module would not talk to the computer so had to replace. This created a delay to get part.

After a week or so, installed new GWM and tried programming fix. No success.

During 2nd week in shop got all the parts and it is quite the list. R&R the cam phasers and it now starts fine.

Had them replace spark plugs while electronics off the manifolds so no labor charge for new spark plugs. Maybe early at 80K, but now its done.

Soon after the work was done I got the letter from Ford about warranty support for this issue which is associated with my particular 3.5l engine. Service Tech said cam phasers have been redesigned so problem should be solved. Said phasers would dry out and stick??? New warranty program shows we are on our own at 100K, pro-rated warranty at 80K via 21N03 & 21N08

Lingering question is do I believe them when they declare the rattle caused no lobg term engine issues???

Just received a letter from Lincoln (October 2021) stating that a Customer Satisfaction Program 21B10, 21N03 and 21NO8 have been issued for my 2018 Navigator to address this knocking problem that is being caused by the cam phasers in the 3.5L GTDI engine.

My Navigator started the cold start knocking at about 30,000 miles and I traded it in to Lincoln rather than mess with this recall/factory repair program and have a new 2021 Navigator on order that is scheduled for new car delivery around 28 December 2021.

Hopefully, the 2021 3.5L engine has been upgraded from the 2018 model engine and I won't have the annoying cold start knocking.

By the way, the Lincoln letter says the Customer Satisfaction Program mentioned above for the 2018 models is free of charge to vehicle owners.

i have the same noise; it is not the phaser rattle. I’ve been told by the dealer it is the turbo. It only happens on cold start and stops once it warms up. We are embarrassed any time we start our 100k truck when anyone is around. Dealer says the noise is normal and since it does not affect the functionality of the truck, warranty will not cover anything.

This is my second navigator (first on was a 2013). I LOVE this truck, but am very disappointed with some of the problems / noises I have had with the new model. Not sure I will get another Lincoln!

Hi Mjohnson and welcome to the Lincoln Forums. You do not mention model year, whether you are still within the 4 year/50,000 mile New Vehicle Warranty or 6 year/70,000 mile Powertrain Warranty, or if you have directly contacted Lincoln about this.

If you are within either or both warranties, contact Lincoln Concierge concerning your problems and concerns. This is what everyone should do if they are not happy with the service from their Dealer.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

Hello, sorry about that. I have a 2018 with 49,800, so everything should still be under warranty. Dealer just returned my truck today; plan is to call Lincoln Concierge tomorrow. I will let everyone know how it goes. Thank you

People have posted videos in the past so others can hear the noise you are describing. That may be helpful, although it is always difficult to say on the internet if there is an issue. But if you can do that, I will sure listen and let you know how it compares to mine. I hate to think this would turn you away from Lincoln.

Appreciate your posts and I've been tracking over the past year plus.

I have 2018 Navigator and experienced the same rattle and noisy start up for as long as I can remember.

I just took the car to dealer for cam phaser recall and reprogram. Had car back for a day and check engine light came on immediately. Called Dealer and they said they woudl come get it but would be ok to drive. Following day complete shut down and failure while driving . Lost all power and coasted off highway..luckily all okay and not too busy time of day. Car would not start and trans woudl not shift to neutral for first flat bed tow truck who came after two hours:( Next truck towed to dealer so will keep you ll posted as to diagnosis and next steps.

Sorry to hear that. I know the 2018 cam phasers had issues. How many miles on your vehicle?

About 51k miles at this point. Have extended warranty however and we will see what they say. Had the cam phasers replaced very early on in the vehicles life with me and it never really fixed the noise and rough start. Waited for the recall and reprogram and they performed the TSP this week which led to yesterdays meltdown. Bought the car brand new and serviced with dealer last 3 plus years

Would think you are covered. Hopefully.

Spoke to Lincoln and they asked me to take my truck back to the dealership so they can listen to the noise again. Dealership picked it up today; fingers crossed they don’t give me the same nonsense answer “the noise does not effect the safety or functionality of the vehicle so warranty won’t cover it”. I am hoping to hear something tomorrow. We shall see. More to come.
