How does one manage to remove this switch? I've gotten to the point where I've pulled the knob and shaft our after pressing the spring loaded button, but now the remaining assembly feels as though its really in there so I must be missing something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Once the knob and shaft are removed it exposes a bezel nut, or the auto dim sensitivity adjuster.
Remove the auto dim adjuster and that exposes a nut.

In either case, that nut has to come out the front and the switch comes out the rear.

Post a picture and I can mark it up for you.

Thanks so much for the response @Action - Perhaps I'm missing a step and I need to take off the dash trim?
(Also, I'm sure I'll be posting more - a lot of this information is lost and the factory service manuals are helpful... to a point)

Taking the trim off will make it much easier.

If you look deeper into the cut out in the trim you will see 4 notches around the perimeter of the piece that sticks out.
Getting a small flat screw driver to engage any notch and then push it counter clockwise will spin the nut off.

BTW kudos on getting the knob out. Kind of awkward to get up there and push the button.

You will need to remove the wiring connector and 3 vacuum lines as well.

Awesome - I'll give it a go... I tried with picks last night, spun just a little and stopped - didn't want to force it. Just trying to get the rheostat and contacts cleaned up - current state no reliable dimming - have to get HL switch to right spot and no touchie!
I'm sure I'll be taking the cluster out to keep the troubleshooting going as well. 99% sure the voltage regulator is cooked - randomly "wild overheating", while "mega oil pressure", with a side of "where'd all that new gas come from"... Or a bad ground, or or or... old car stuff.
