Cloudy Backup Camera Screen

My 2018 Navigator front camera is cloudy. The lens cover is not dirty, and the wiper fluid function works fine. How do you get rid of the cloudy view? Did moisture get in there, and caused some condensation or is it a faulty camera?

Hi mm. There is no way to blind diagnose this over the Internet. So first...Is your 2018 Navigator still within the 4 year/50,000 mile New Car Warranty? If yes, make an appointment for service and demonstrate to them what you see.

Do not just drive your car in, tell them it is cloudy, hand them the keys and leave it to them to check on their own later. Instead, park it in an area where the ambient light will cause cloudiness and show them it is cloudy. This helps avoid the dreaded "Could not duplicate the customer concern" diagnosis. Get the representative to say out loud that they see it is cloudy, then let them diagnose and fix it.

Let us now how you make out and good luck.

Thanks for the response. My vehicle is no longer under warranty, so am hesitant to bring it in. Was trying to see if anyone else had similar issues in the past, and if there was an easy fix. Purchased the vehicle w/ 44k miles, and brought it in for two warranty fixes (one was a faulty sunroof and the other was an engine issue).

Thanks for your input.

I purchased the car about two months ago. It has 38k miles and is still under factory warranty for two more months.

I immediately noticed the backup camera issue. And it is not only the clouding but, indeed, the glare which a good camera should compensate for. Shouldn't I be able to see what I’m backing into when backing up west at sundown :)? . My neighbor can in his Audi and I can with my 2019 RAM pick up.

Which brings me back to the issue of is the camera defective or do all of the of them of this vintage have the clouding and glare problem?

I’ll give Lincoln Concierge a call.

Thx
Thanks for bringing this up! I just bought mine (2017 14K miles) 2 months ago and I see a similar image to you. The sideview cameras look great, but it's the rear that always seems to be slightly cloudy. Thought it was just dust, but I noticed it in several of the Continentals I drove. Will definitely bring it up with the dealer at the next appointment.

I have a similar unsharp and muddy picture on the 360 degree view.

I wonder if it's poor screen resolution rather than the cameras.

A cursory assessment of the problem should be free. However, my dealer advised me that a full replacement, if necessary, would be about $1,500.
It's a NHTSA recall. It should be repaired at no charge under the recall. The Ford recall notice is 22S51 which states, "Ford Motor Company has authorized your dealer to replace the rear view camera free of charge parts and labor". See https://www.lincoln.com/support/recalls-details/

I've been looking at Continental Reserves for a month or so and test drove a 2019 on Saturday. All the cameras on that car are foggy. The salesman said a lot of new Aviators on their lot have the problem. They can't sell the new ones with these problems, but they can sell a used Lincoln.

There is a Customer Satisfaction Program #22M03 which was issued on 06/20/23. See the URL above. At this point it isn't a recall. I still need to call for more info.

I’ve had my rear view camera replaced under warranty in April. I had not been having a problem with it; the recall was pushed on me.

The “they all do that” line from the dealer doesn’t sound right to me; there is not much such chat here on this forum along those lines.

I was scanning cars.com today and I get the impression that there has been negligible depreciation on Contis in the three years of my ownership of one of these. It is such a good car that I understand why.

I would keep shopping.

I did call the number and got a voice message which directed me to owner.lincoln.com which took me back to the URL I referenced in my post above.

I will continue shopping. We have a 3.0 T MKZ which has a torque steer problem when WOT. Come to find out that's because the rear wheels don't really come on line until the front wheels start slipping. The Continental is attractive for having (allegedly) 4x4.

My wife and I both enjoyed the Continental test drive and really like it with the 3.0 L twin turbo. WOT is very smooth...no torque steer. "More power!"

The All-Wheel Drive system that comes with the 3.0TT Conti is very good. I have never felt torque steer. The car is also equipped with torque vectoring electric motors incorporated into the rear suspension but I have never been aware of them actually operating. It is a great driving car IMHO.

The screen on my recently purchased 2017 Continental appears cloudy (vs the crystal clear picture I get on my 2019 RAM truck). Initially I thought maybe the camera lens might be made of that kind of material that tends to get cloudy with age as you see on some older car headlight housings. Has anybody else had an issue like this? I took the car to the dealer and they said the camera lens was find and the picture was what it was.
If I am correct, there is an open recall on the rear camera lens fog issue...

You guys know there is a Recall for this correct? Take it to a dealership, the parts should be available by now. It was released a few months ago.

For the Continental there is a recall for the rear camera to replace the units to prevent fogging/cloudiness. So have your dealer swap out the old units for new and improved parts.

Got my recall letter 3 2 today saying that new parts are available. Booked for Aug 2 for camera replacement.

We were looking at maybe buying this car 5 weeks ago. The backup camera was foggy. We told the salesman we didn't want to buy it with the foggy camera because of safety. Two weeks went buy, and we decided maybe we should get it anyway and get it fixed under the recall. Everything else was ok. So we told the salesman we were re-evaluating it and if it was not sold yet, we wanted to look at it again. I also asked him, since Ford was going to pay for fixing it, parts and labor, why the dealership had not fixed it already to avoid customers being skeptical of the car because of the backup camera. He immediately responded along the lines of "We'll take care of it, sir!" So now it's ours.;)
