Missing engine covers

I just spent a few hundred dollars with a local shop to diagnose intermittent fail to starts on my Expedition. I discovered after all was said and done - that the ECU is in the engine compartment (like this car - arghh)! The issue was corrosion/contaminants in the ECU harness connector pins/sockets. The repair was to simply disconnect and clean. All that because some idiot bean counters made the engineers save a nickel with a shorter harness and no hole/seal in the firewall. All my other cars have the ECU in the passenger compartment (up in the dash) where it is protected from the environment and normally in a humidity controlled environment. I see this as a potential issue down the road as well.

I wonder how we can get the covers. This is nonsense with the ECU hanging out there. Maybe I'll have to test my service department. Please let us know your success, Impulse...

I recall seeing somewhere that the engine covers are included on Canadian models but not US ones. Can't remember where I saw this though.

Talked to the Parts Manager he looked them up and is ordering them in, I'lll keep you posted and get the part number.

I ended up using the local dealership today to cut my new key (the only reasonable folks around at $10).

I asked the parts guy for the part numbers; when I told him why he suggested I reach out to the service manager. I'm preparing an email to said service manager to perhaps take care of this. The main large center piece is PN LC5Z*16A238*D. The two side pieces are LC5Z*16A238*G & LC5Z*16A238*F.

We'll see what the response is.

Fitment shows they are for a 2020 Aviator, all trims. I believe it is because the listings for the 2021 and 2022 are not complete yet.

Did they give any indication on whether those were stock or special order parts and how long it would take to get them? Assume they are doing the install as well?

The issue you describe above is kind of common. A number of Windstars and Escapes had the issue with water intrusion to the connector to the PCM. And some of the vehicles had recalls for a fix.

My older Navigator with an "engine cover" does not cover the PCM.
And that PCM like many other FLM models is located on the cowl just under the hood opening. Opening the hood after a rain may dump water onto that connector.

There are a couple of things that can be done.
Wipe the connector area so dirt does not accumulate and retain water that is dumped on the connector
Coat the connector and harness with a treatment. (Rubber/plastic treatment) This acts as a barrier for water and will shed water.
Place a physical barrier over the connector and PCM. A cut piece of plastic or rubber such that it acts as an umbrella.

The company has spend a lot of time and effort to make the connection water tight and yet issues still show up in higher mileage applications. Which may mean the heat and soakings works on the connector and the connector looses the battle over time.

For those PCMs mounted into the cowl, I usually give it a wipe once a year. Oil change time would be a good time for that.

.... That would deflect the air pressure going under the hood and stop the lift.

Today a 4 hr trip. After about 3 hous behind the wheel, my wife (driving) starts getting alarmed at the amount of hood wiggle up front. I think they missed the aerodynamics on this one.

Here are a couple pictures There are 2 missing pieces on each side The blue and the narrow one clipped to the fender.

The car is incomplete without them as the hood rubber gasket becomes useless. They may as well remove that whole gasket
