Just thought I'd start off a thread with what everyone's done to their Town Car today ........

I'll start it off by saying I changed out the Autolite (previous owner installed) spark plugs with Motorcraft SP493 plugs, all 8 after throwing a P0308 misfire code the other day. Fixed it right up. Waiting on Motorcraft coils from Rock Auto also.

Changed rear differential fluid from whatever was in there, to Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90, filled to 1.9 US quarts as the manual called for.

Used rtv silicone gasket maker for the rear diff gasket as there wasn't one on there to begin with. Cleaned both mating surfaces very well with a non-marring gasket scraper and sprayed with brake cleaner. Gears looked great after 65k miles on them, oil was filthy though, no friction modifier needed as my axle code is open and not a lsd.

I just got my 2011 Town Car in Sep 2021 - and so far I am loving it. I have, only so far replaced all the interior bulbs with LED (even the vanity mirrors -- for those looking for those bulbs, they are 6614 F). Next step is to replace all the exteriors with LED (I have halogen headlights). Still trying to find out of the flasher module is just that, a module which can be replaced instead of having a resistor.

Looking to replace the carpet and floormats too - the previous owner was a smoker, and there are burns in the car. Still trying to find someplace where I can get embroidered floormats - apparently there is a restriction from FORD about specific places making embroidered mats.

Got a few little things that I need to fix, but for a 10 year old car, surprised it is in such a good condition.

Well, I wiped it off so it was sparkly clean and shiny, checked the oil & tire air pressure and we went for a ride and had lunch. Cruising the 303 highway in west valley Phoenix, AZ on a beautiful day with puffy clouds and blue skies with the music playing was great.
It's my wifes car so I don't drive it much and am always amazed at how quiet and smooth it is, the Continental TrueContact Eco+ tires are especially quiet and nice riding.

Yesterday put new upper and lower ball joints and sway bar links on , she was sounding very creaky on turns and bumps, old ones were completely shit . Went with Moog for lower ball joints , Mevotech supreme for upper ball joints and Mevotech supreme for sway bar end links, unfortunately, those damn ABS sensors were galded in the recess hole in the steering knuckle , waiting on Rock Auto for 2 brand new sensors and 2 brand new wheel bearing hubs as there was some grinding and hard spots on the hub upon examination, will be sanding and cleaning out the steering knuckle recess hole for the new sensors before installing new wheel bearing hubs , if no one has ever changed their upper and lower ball joints, do yourself a favor and order the 2 ABS wheel sensors while you're at, they were absolutely galded and no way they were coming out with out a break.

Has anyone ever removed the armrest/ashtray covers from 2007-2011 Town Car? One of mine just 'slams' open while the other 'soft-opens' I want to see if I can fix this.

I have not, I think all mine just slam shut. Not sure if mine were ever in soft mode operation, at least they weren't when I bought the car.

I took advantage of spring-like weather today to wash the car and then wax the roof. I had run out of time to do that when I waxed the hood and trunk last month and finally got around to it.

Proud new owner of an '07 Town Car Signature Limited in Cashmere tricoat, and it's been a busy last few days indeed. Let me break it down...

* The obvious, of course -- title, registration, insurance, all that splendid jazz.
* Oil change, dealer inspection, and preemptive transmission and brake service that don't appear to be necessary, but since I don't have confirmation of their last completion date beyond "last couple of years," I'm playing it safe.
* Scheduled ceramic window tint. Life in South Florida just isn't going to work without it.
* Picked up a spare key/fob combination rather like this one here, so my wife doesn't have to use the valet key.
* Power solutions! That always-on 12V is a bit troubling to me, so I've acquired this rather handsome power splitter, which has a bonus feature I didn't realize from the ad copy -- the master on/off button that occupies the entire end of the plug itself (and houses the voltage display) kills power to the entire system, including all USB ports, all three split 12V ports (despite them having their own individual power toggles), and the voltage meter alike. It appears to be mechanical, too -- hard-cutting the power through the entire device completely, right at the plug point. I am cautiously optimistic about leaving it plugged in, and will follow up with reports on how well it fares over time.
* Installed a ProClip center dash mount (nonpermanently, it clips in and pops out again with a gentle round of prybar) to which I've attached an inexpensive ball socket mount plate and my old creaky QI car cradle. It isn't pretty but it's adequately functional.
* Replaced the stock stereo with my standby double-DIN, the Kenwood Excelon DPX794BH. Needed the Metra dash kit and an antenna extension cable, splurged on a Crux SWRFD-60L to wire in the steering wheel controls, and picked up a pair of Infinity Reference 8632CFXes with adapters for the front doors. Someday, I will feel brave enough to disassemble the rear seats and install rear deck speakers...but today is just not that day, forgive me.
* Because I'm somewhat terrified of the neighborhood kids or pets dashing out behind me as I back out of the driveway, I'm installed the somewhat amusingly-named Wolfbox G840S digital rearview camera and recording system. Straps on, easily comes off again with no permanent modification to the mirror. I've also installed this clever fellow for powering it through the OBD port. Easy enough to disconnect for diagnostics, and doesn't even touch the bus pins -- the connector only uses steady power, accessory power, and ground pins (I checked!). The switch allows me to select between these power pins, so I can leave the camera (and recording loop) running with a click at will, or flip it back off again just as easily.
* It's sacrilege, I admit, to cover up the burl, but given that I have some nerve damage in the hands and grip strength issues, I needed to thicken the steering wheel a little, and I picked up a leather steering wheel cover pretty similar visually to this one, to make the wheel a little easier to handle with grip issues.
* A family member who does craft work with resin has promised me a truly brilliant license plate frame that's entirely too colorful for my tastes. Photos may be forthcoming when I receive it. I honestly have no idea what it's going to look like, yet.
* And finally, I'm not allowed to own a car like this without a proper pair of gloves for it, and if I can find a truly stately umbrella for it, I'll grab it, too.

Loving this car. Absolutely, positively loving it.

@rancourt

First Off Welcome....and YES these are amazing cars. There are Internet rumors floating around that they are going to bring back the Crown Vic on the new Lincoln Continental platform - let's hope they bring back the Town Car too.

Wow! impressive list. I have some questions.

1) The key you got - appears to be a key and remote in one unit....how did you get it programmed? Everything I have read says you cannot add another key if you only have 1 (my case - purchased used, and only have ONE key and fob - no valets or anything else). I would like to get back to the original set (2 keys, 2 valet and 2 fobs).

2) Interesting radio choice - I am looking at this one for my '11 Town Car Sony-XAV-AX5600 - and will be adding Sirius antenna and back-up camera. I am hoping that I can use a different XM antenna than the ugly black box that comes with it (would like to have a wing like unit like my 2018 Camaro Convertible has on the trunk (mounted center rear of the top at rear window)). The guys at Crutchfield very helpful in picking out all I would need to "modernize" my Town Car. Just wait for the radio to be back in stock.

Hey, Bearhntr! Thanks for the welcome!

I have two keys with the car (one, plus a valet) -- if I didn't, yes, I'd need to go through a locksmith. My understanding is that my local hardware store would sell me a replacement key for $90, fully programmed, and the dealer wants a bit more than that. But since I have two keys, I will be programming the key myself, as soon as I arrange for it to be cut (which I can't do myself, at the moment).

The key fobs, however, can indeed be programmed even if you have *none*! The procedure I used was as follows:

  • Open driver's door.
  • Unlock all locks with driver's door button.
  • Insert working key into ignition, and quickly turn back and forth from OFF to RUN eight times, so quickly that the first 'bong' of 'run mode' has no time to sound. End with the key still in RUN, and listen for the locks to loudly cycle once, indicating program mode is engaged.
  • Quickly press a button (I chose "unlock") on each fob you wish to link with the car (up to four maximum). You have about ten seconds, so be ready to *go* the moment program mode begins. You will need to link *each* fob you plan to use, anew -- any fob *not* relinked here will be disconnected and no longer work.
  • After timeout, or after the fourth fob is linked, the locks will cycle again, ending program mode. Switch key to OFF and remove key.
If you only have one key, talk to a hardware shop or your dealer. But you can easily add new fobs yourself.

2) Interesting radio choice - I am looking at this one for my '11 Town Car Sony-XAV-AX5600 - and will be adding Sirius antenna and back-up camera. I specifically wanted a radio with a true analog receiver, because I regularly go to a local drive-in theater, and some radios (particularly software-based HD radio systems for some "smart" head units) introduce a 1.5 second decoding delay. Fine for music, but very jarring when watching a movie, and the sound's badly off-sync! This Kenwood has a setting to completely disable HD mode if I wish, and only use the standard-def radio receiver -- and if worst comes to worst, the KPX594BT is the same radio without an HD module at all. I'd love a more modern touchscreen system, and had one in my last car...but it meant I couldn't enjoy the drive-in, and I learned my lesson from it.

Also, this one has an LED color-match feature. I have the text display and main buttons matched to Town Car Dashboard Chartreuse. :)

My understanding is that aftermarket radios, in a car without XM radio, would need an XM radio antenna added anyway -- and that means, really, that any XM antenna you'd choose to install would theoretically work. I don't have a lot of experience with this -- the only XM-enabled car I owned had XM from the factory -- but my understanding is that the antenna is just that, an antenna, and if a boomerang antenna can be used *at all* for your purposes, there's no reason that an aftermarket head unit would complicate this. I apologize, though, as I have no personal experience here with those.

What is wrong with the 1.5 second delay??? It would be like watching those old Japanese and Chinese movies where their mouth moves and then you get the sound..... LOL :D

No Drive-ins around here any more. If you want to go through a Drive-In around here, you mount a Tablet on your dash, load up a move, park in the parking lot of the convivence store (i.e.. Snack Bar) and enjoy...... ROFL

Yeah, I know the programming the fobs bit - did that for my sister's 2002 Town Car when she lost one of her remotes.

I just need to get with a FORD dealer and get some keys (or find them online). The deal I have is not taking out a 2nd mortgage to get them. I have emailed a few places about them, as I was able to get my KEY ID, it is just getting them made.

I've used this place for replacement keys, he's in Roswell and close to you. He also recommended a local guy in CLT for me for programming. Much better experience and price than the dealer.

Drive in movie theaters? Didn't know any existed these days!
