Attached is a document describing how to replace the door lock actuator on a 2005 model. The procedure is the same for all 2003 and up models. The 1998 thru 2002 models had a different way of attaching the arm rest control panel so be careful not to do damage.

For the rear doors, the procedure to replace the lock actuator on a 2006 model is attached. Also attached is the exploded view of the rear door lock, and the procedure to remove the rear door trim panel. The tips for the actuator install on the front door of a 2005 model in post #1 may be helpful here too.

Good luck.

A pdf version of this article is attached.

Door handle stuck in the "open" position, and will not return. Also will not open the door. Have to roll down window and pull outside door handle to open door. Will this procedure show replacement of door handle opening mechanism?

I've gone thru the tech posts on opening rear doors. My 09 Lincoln Town Car has no up-down old style lock. I am unable to get the door to unlock from inside or outside by manually pulling on the lock rod or the door handle rod. I have removed the actuator(by spreading the steel U-shaped holder) & separated the lock rod from the actuator. This did not accomplish the objective either.

I am stumped as to the next course of action and am open to any/all suggestions.

I've gone thru the tech posts on opening rear doors. My 09 Lincoln Town Car has no up-down old style lock. The fob/drivers door keypad/unlock switch driver's door are all ineffective. I am unable to get the door to unlock from inside or outside or by manually pulling on the lock rod or the door handle rod.

I have removed the actuator(by spreading the steel U-shaped holder) & separated the lock rod from the actuator, enabling free movement of all the attached rods. Still can't accomplish the objective. Suggestions are welcome.

The disconnected actuator is still electrically connected & will still move the white plastic when activated by the fob/drivers door keypad/unlock switch driver's door. Why will it not unlock the door?2009 RDoor Actuator.webp

My problem with the rear door lock mechanism was entirely due to lack of lubrication. With the door panel off (b4 lubing), took 2 people to get the door open. Once the door was opened & access was available to inject some white lithium grease, problem solved.

I am having an issue with my 09 Town Car back passenger lock. It will unlock consistently but will not lock, I end up having to force it locked. I took the door panel off tonight and could not see any reason why it wasn't working. I sprayed it down with wd40. Did about 15 test lock and unlocks... So far so good.

Hey Wimpy, I am still having an issue with my lock and my symptoms appear to be very similar to yours. Specifically where did you lube it up? I am having a hard time pinpointing exactly where my mechanism is sticking.

What happens for me is the lock will get stuck in the unlock position, I can force jam it closed, and then the lock will work for a little bit but will eventually get stuck in either the locked or unlocked position. The actuator fires, just appears to get stuck.

If your keys have snapped or stuck in the ignition to your vehicle, then a locksmith near me can help by removing the key and then repairing or replacing the ignition that caused the problem.

My problem is the driver side, interior handle (gold latch) won't close. I'm having to roll the window down to open the door from the outside. It's located underneath #6 (screw cover) shown in the top diagram. Does the actuator control this gold latch keeping it from closing and opening?

Hello Cajun, I have the same problem as you. How did you solve it? Did you replace the actuator?

Long dead thread Carlyle prob no response from OP. However, no, IIRC the actuator has no affect on your interior handle, don't believe there's a physical connection between them; they're both just attached to the latch assembly. Should be connected with a formed metal rod, held in place with little plastic retainers at each end. I would bet that one end of that rod popped out. Can you push the handle in, just nothing "engaging" in or out? Hopefully the plastic retainer isn't broken, just loosened and "fell" out. Probably at latch end where there is a lot of complicated movement. Pretty easy to remove door panel, little manipulation and you can reach the various components inside.

Wow, thanks for your response Ogre01! Yeah Cajun didn't respond but I was so happy to find an identical situation like mine. To answer your question, no, I can not push it in or pull it out. It's stuck in outward position. Ford dealership said part for it isn't made anymore. So I guess they seem to think there's a replacement part that just isn't produced anymore. I think I'm gonna try this: (see PEEWEE60's post) Cannot Open Door? Handle Sticking Out?: Door Handle Stuck Outwards...

Carlyle, good disassembly info in that thread. I too would recommend taking the door panel off. You can see the action pretty easily when the panel is off, and it should (hopefully) be an obvious problem and easy solution.
