Webasto Charging Cable Issues. For GT owners

I have a 2021 GT and had a 240V NEMA 6-20R 30A outlet installed in my garage. I have never had any issues with it. I do not plug and unplug it though. I bought a spare Webasto charging cord that I use when I travel.

I have a 22 Aviator and 22 Corsair GT. I am using the supplied Webasto -made charging cables that Lincoln gave me when I purchased the cars to plug into my house of which I had an electrician install 2-240v outlets from my circuit panel in my garage late last year. The 240v adapter part of the plug from the cable keeps failing after several months. I have had Webasto send me new ones each time. Webasto even said to change the receptacle to an industrial-strength receptacle which another electrician did in January.

Has anyone else had the 240v adapters keep failing after a few months? I don't know what else to do besides keep calling Webasto. I have followed all their recommendations. I don't want to have to pay electricians to come out to my house every time. Thank you.

Just had the same thing happen to me on my 2022 Corsair Gt. The adapter has failed and works fine on 120v

I picked up replacement charger from my dealer this week. It is the Lincoln branded version of the Webasto Go charger. The TurboCord is no longer available for purchase from Lincoln or Webasto. According to the service director at my dealership, the TurboCord should not be used as it overheats and can cause fires. He put this in writing in an email to me. He also told me there were so many issues with the TurboCord that it had been redesigned and the new design is all that is available from Lincoln and is what ships with all Lincoln Grand Touring vehicles. The new charging cord uses a completely different cord and outlet and has different electrical requirements for both 110V or 240V charging.

I contacted Webasto since I purchased a TurboCord as my travel charger. The person I spoke to was quite rude and denied that there was anything wrong with those cord. He told me the problem was with my outlet. Fun fact: my original cord faulted out due to overheating. The back-up cord worked fine in the same outlet.

The person at Webasto ticked me off enough that I filed complaints with both the Consumer Product Safety Commission and NHTSA.

So, in lieu of having a Webasto product plugged into any outlet in my garage I ordered a ChargePoint Home Flex. I have an electrician coming out today to give me an estimate on rewiring, new outlet, new breaker, etc. for the same location in my garage as well as installation of the ChargePoint system.

I have both a Corsair and Aviator GT. Lincoln gave me a visa gift card for the cost of re-installing the two new chargers with wall units because of the failures of the turbo cord. Keep the receipts and complain to concierge.

I checked with my electrician about the hardiness of the plug he installed and he said they install these lines and plugs 10 times a week mostly for Teslas that are replicating in Virginia like hot cakes. He said they always install a heavy duty industrial grade plug that matches the specs of the Leviton. I forgot the brand but he said I had nothing to worry about as they have never had a Tesla owner have a melting issue with the work they did. I trust the electrician to know these things and o the right thing. I have checked the plug when charging and there is zero heat coming off the plug. Same at the 50 amp breaker. Zero heat. I would guess that cheaper made plugs and chargers would generate heat which would alert us to a problem. I was quite concerned that the Lincoln plug gets pretty hot. That is concerning to me. That is why I went with ChargePoint as these are quite popular, they have a great reputation of quality and seem to be one of the most purchased.

Wow!! I think it was a bad batch of adapters. The replacement I bought on my own is still working in PLACE of the one Lincoln sent originally. I think Im five months in with the one I bought directly.

Quick update. Not only is my original cord all tangled and knotted up, I did notice the replacement plug does have some burn marks on it. So i just switched to the unit I bought for myself and the new replacement plug. Will see if I get the warmth and other stuff too. The second adapter didnt fail, its just crazy that there was actually heat.

My 22 that I picked up this past Monday came with an updated 240V adapter. It's a 14-50P. Perhaps they are addressing this with an updated adapter?

Update: The AeroVironment is the third adapter. I got it last year, but it failed between 2-3 weeks ago. I only know that the car wasnt charged one day. Mad as hell. Now, I dont want to purchase another cord, but its not easy finding a j1772 cord I can use WITHOUT an adapter. I just want it to plug in and work. I found a local shop that I will work with. The adapters I see on Home Depot and Amazon might fail too.

Since there are now numerous reports of failures on here I recommend anyone who has had a failure or failures to file complaints with NHTSA. The more complaints they receive the greater the chance Webasto will be forced to recall them.

I’m completely leery of Webasto cords now and had a ChargePoint installed in my garage.

My GT was manufactured in November 2022 and came with a 240v NEMA 14-50P adapter. I used the 120v nine times no problem and the 240v once OK just to check it. Then I installed an Emporia smart wall charger for convenience with an app that tells me precisely the kWh used to charge.

As far as the 14-50 outlet, do not use the Leviton or any other $10 NEMA 14-50 from Home Depot, Lowes, etc. There are countless stories on the Internet about these causing fires when used for EV charging. They're OK for dryers but not EVs. They do not meet code for EV (over 3-hours continuous use). That said, they might be OK for the GT, which only charges at 15 amps on a 50 amp circuit. If you were charging at 48 amps, you'd be asking for trouble with the cheap outlets.

If you want a safe outlet get the Hubbell or Bryant (by Hubbell). These are industrial grade. They can run up to $100 or more but you can get from Grainger for $46.

The Emporia is $400, after coupon code take off 5%. No shipping or tax and qualifies for 30% IRS tax credit. Net cost about $266. It's a nice unit, I like it. For $266, not worth screwing around with the Webasto.

As far as the 14-50 outlet, do not use the Leviton or any other $10 NEMA 14-50 from Home Depot, Lowes, etc.

I have been using the Leviton 6-50 at 24 amps for about 4 years without any problem. I would never try to push it to 50 amps. Also I only plug in and out about once every 3 months (due to EVSE faults).
When I get another EVSE I expect it to use a 14-50 plug and then I will go to a Bryant or Hubbell. I have it saved in my Amazon account.

So i decided on a hack i wish I had at first. since I have two cords, I use one just to slow charge overnight. If I'm home and going nowhere, why do I need the fast charge? I use the one GOOD adapter i have. Will reach out to webasto to get replacements. I hope this will extend their life, but I'll get a new cord without an adapter soon.

As previously explained, the 240v is more efficient. Also, while unlikely, you could need the car in an emergency, say drive to the hospital. On 240v, it goes from 0-100% in 3+20 vs about 9 hours for 115v. Of course, if your gas tank is full, kind of irrelevant.
