Can anyone direct me to vid or instructions on install of 2017 third brake light? The car wash tore the lens off mine and the only thing I have been able to find on install of a new one is earlier than 2017. The old unit is still there without the lens. I need instructions of how the old one come out to install a new one. Thanks for any help.

My dealer also uses hand washers and they're FREE...but I do leave a good tip...
I believe free washes are pretty well the standard now. At least my dealer has been doing it for the 12 years I've been going there and it doesn't matter what make the vehicle is. They also did my floor liners.

I now put a strip of painter's tape (blue) on each end of the 3rd brake light lens.
I thought of that and I’ll probably get tired of washing them myself and try that. One of the how to vids also mentioned sanding the sharp edge smooth to prevent the edge getting caught by brushes

Yeah, I saw that video too, but was wondering how much sanding was needed to remedy that. Too risky (sandpaper and all). I went with the painter's tape and it doesn't leave any residue.

Had the exact same happen to me today at the car wash, on my 2018 MKX Lincoln

Lost my high stop light on a 2018 MKX. Must be a design flaw. Should have a recall fix this.

Welcome to the Forum Ernie. 👋
How did you lose it? Was it the whole assembly or just the lens? I doubt you'll see a 'recall' on this. A 'TSB" maybe.

Same thing happened today with my 2018 MKX. About halfway through the tunnel I hear a loud "snap". At first, I thought my sunroof had cracked but later discovered half the lens was missing.

So I was wondering, since it seems to be fairly common, does anyone know WHY it happens?

Joined the club today. Mine snapped due to freezing rain apparently. Must have gotten in the cracks and when it froze, it snapped it off. Cant find 5" piece of it. I would normally replace myself, but not after seeing the videos. Forget that.

Mine cracked as a result of freezing rain getting into it, I have the plastic pieces, can I fix this with super glue? Only issue is our temp, we are under 20 degrees, will any glue bond this back together. Thanks for the help. 2018 mkx

I had a different vehicle do this exact same thing. I just ordered the part and replaced it myself.

If you can't remove both pieces and glue indoors, maybe heat up your garage?

It's likely polycarbonate plastic. If so, the best glue is methyl methacrylate. You can find it in fusing plastic solutions like this one (not regular Super Glue).

Super Glue - 1oz Plastic Fusion Epoxy Adhesive

(This is not an endorsement. I have not used this brand.)

Super helpful, my husband was going to use silicone, and smart idea to bring it in the house to keep it warm, might be a weekend project. We taped the remaining piece to the car so it doesn't fly off. My kiddo lives near a salvage yard and has had luck finding pieces/parts. I love my Lady Lincoln, first time something broke on her. Thanks

Silicone to fix the crack, no. But if he was thinking of using silicone to adhere the entire part so it never comes off again, yes. That's an option. It's kinda the 'duct tape" option but I've certainly repaired stuff that way. I repaired an SUV spoiler that lost one leg with RTV silicone. But nobody would ever be able to remove that spoiler again.

If you go the silicone route use an RTV silicone like this one. It's very durable and will handle the freezing ice, rain, wind, whatever. I used to be able to grab some aerospace grade stuff at work. That stuff was so useful.

Appreciate the reply, and advice.

Nice to see I'm in good company. The same exact thing happened to my 2017 MKX yesterday at the car wash.

Could someone please tell me if just the missing lens can be replaced or do I have to buy the entire light assembly?

What will the light cost over the Lincoln parts counter?
I just got dealer quote of over 1100.00 for my 2017 MKX. I was told the whole thing has to be replaced, even if just the cover is off. I don’t use car washes and have no idea how mine came off.

If you are talking about the lighted portion, this site appears to show it can be replaced.

Simple actually. Just remove the back end of the car ..... (who's the idiot that designed this stuff?)
Thanks for the video. Now I know I have to pay a professional to fix it, rather than having my 25-yr-old son do it.

As a suggestion after the repair.
Use a treatment on the plastic (and all plastic pices) A treatment used once or twice a year will keep water from penetrating the joints.
No water, no freezing water.

Several companies make a plastic/rubber/leather treatment. Meguires, 303, Mothers. And there are others as well.
Once or twice a year is usually good enough.
