My Lincoln
2021 Corsair
It is BS that is costs $109 to update the nav maps after spending so much on a car and considering every cell phone has google maps that are always getting updated for free!

I tried using the factory mapping when I first took delivery of our car in April '25. It showed where we were ok, but the search feature for addresses and businesses was almost useless, so we are using CarPlay from our phones and Google Maps, waaaaaay better. I will NOT be paying for the Lincoln service with map updates when the time comes.

Well I like using the car nav. It has a nice big screen I can see and if I use my cell phone the car insurance tracker dings me for using my phone while driving

My tracker doesn’t do that, but I use the phone nav with CarPlay. That puts it on the car’s screen.

I have no idea what that means and don't plan to lookup. Freaking car already has enough things to remember

Just happens that the dealer reached out to me today to see how my car was. So I told them of my various items and am waiting what if anything they will do. It was past warranty, but I got at a Lincoln dealer so hopefully they are higher standard than some dealers in this case.

Well they said I had coverage for 30 days/1000 mi. Makes me wonder they waited till just after 90 days to check on my happiness with car.

I absolutely love using CarPlay. It automatically pulls up addresses for appointments on my iPhone calendar when I get in the car. Tap one button on the Sync touchscreen and it navigates to my destination, taking into account traffic and road construction. The CarPlay map is easier to view on the Sync screen than the car's nav system, in my opinion. Also, my music streaming app and favorite podcasts are just a couple of screen touches away. Text messages can be read and I can reply with my voice, which is converted to text.

It does all this without taking the phone out of your pocket. If you're not using these features, I think it is well worth spending some time to become familiar.

I also have an insurance tracker but it doesn't ding me for accessing the phone through CarPlay (USAA). Yours may, however, but perhaps worth a try. Generally I will set a destination before I get going and not touch it. But the voice activation button on the steering wheel works good as well. Just have to press and hold the button to use voice through CarPlay.

Well I guess I will just use my phone for an address and then put that into the car nav. Now I will say that doesn't always work because google on my $200 cell phone knows about road changes and my expensive car knows nothing really. not going to add another thing to change each time I start the car and my point is that is BS a nav update costs so much!!!!

If the address is already in your phone, such as in your contacts, just touch it and it pulls up the iPhone Maps app, which also knows about traffic. The map app will be shown on the vehicle's touch screen if you're using CarPlay. Super easy. There's no need to pay for the vehicle's nav subscription.

When he said $200 Google phone I assumed he has an Android

Good point. So, an Android phone should work with the car's Android Auto, but I have no experience with that. Also, the OP has a 2021 Corsair, which may not have wireless Android Auto. OP may need to plug the phone into the car with a cord.

and .......................... the thread isn't about using my phone!

I updated our '22 Corsair GT a few weeks ago and all's well. I much prefer the in-car unit for day-to-day use as I find the traffic function (Sync 3/Sirius-XM TravelLink) to be quite accurate and helpful, especially on long trips. It's also pretty snappy and easy to read while driving.

However ... I do use Apple CarPlay when I'm in an urban area that I'm not familiar with and I'm looking for something specific. Search function is much better. and more up-to-date I've also used Waze on occasion but find it's re-routing to avoid traffic, etc., to not be as helpful as it's cracked up to be. For example, I was recently going through Seattle on a heavy construction/traffic day and it routed me onto city streets ... several of which were closed for a street fair!! I'm sure in the long run I would have been better off staying on I-5 and creeping along!!

nope, don't even know what carplay is and wasn't my topic
From Google AI ... "Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are smartphone integration systems that allow you to access and use certain smartphone apps on your car's infotainment screen. They essentially mirror your phone's interface on the car's display, enabling you to use navigation, music, messaging, and other compatible apps through the car's controls, like touchscreens, buttons, and voice commands."
For anyone interested in setting this up for a Lincoln Corsair, this link is quite helpful:

DonL -- back to your original post, I agree that paying for map updates is BS. We are just trying to offer alternatives that are free and that work just as well or maybe better.

I personally would never pay for nav in the car if given the choice.
