Over the past 1.5 years, I have noticed a buzzing sound that only occurs on certain roads and at certain speeds coming from the back portion of the cabin. On other roads ... it's as quiet as can be!! Overall, I'd guess that I can hear this buzzing/rattle on less than 5% of roads.
Unfortunately, one of those roads happens to be the "oil mat" road in our neighborhood so I hear it for a minute or two every time I drive! Of course, the dealer hasn't heard it and therefore has not been much help. I understand, and actually appreciate the time they have spent trying to locate the buzzing sound.
When my daughter and grandson were visiting a few weeks ago, I mentioned this and she spoke right up, "I hear it ... it's right over my head". She was in the back seat. She put her finger on the black piece of plastic that covers the roof brace that separates the two panes of glass on the roof ... and poof ... the buzz was gone!! To check this out further, I later applied 4 small pieces of gaffer's tape to the top rear edge of the trim piece, holding it firmly in place to the plastic and the glass. Then I drove around ... nothing!! It was as quiet as can be!! Since then I've driven over several stretches of roads where I would always hear the buzz ... and it's gone!! I did try inserting some small slices of foam inside the plastic trim piece to hold it more securely to the strut underneath, but that caused the cover to hit the trim piece when I opened or closed the cover. With just the tape holding it in place, there's no obstruction to the fabric panel opening or closing. Since the tape is on the rear and top of the trim panel, it is visible to someone sitting in the back seat, but only if they're looking up at it and the full cover is open.
I have spoken to the service manager and he wants to take some pix of my "fix" and will discuss any available options with Parts, Ford, etc.. On the one hand, the tape works so well and is totally invisible from the front seat, so "who cares?" On the other hand, I shouldn't have to use gaffer's tape to solve a rattle on a $65k Lincoln!! I'll see what they have to say. I am pretty sure I don't want them to do anything extensive to the roof as I suspect that may cause more issues in the long run than it will fix!!
(I looked around this site to post a pic of the "fix" but can't seem to figure out how to do it. I do not use any online photo hosting sites so using a URL to link to is not possible.)
Hope this helps someone else!!
