My Lincoln
2011 MKS
Hey Group. I'm new here. I've inherited my dad's 2011 MKS. It's in great shape but does have one issue. It's all of a sudden started to misfire but in an odd way.

It's been showing 2 codes, P0201 and P0301. The odd part to me is this: When I start it for the first time of the day it runs perfectly. No issues, no misfires. After the engine has been running for 30 plus minutes and comes to operating temperature, still running fine, and then turn it off and restart 10 minutes or more later it has an immediate misfire. The engine has to cool off entirely (4-6 hours) before it will run properly again. If I don't turn it off and just let it run all day, I can drive 500 miles with no issue. It's only after I've turned it off and started it up again that the problem arises.

To me this feels like and electrical issue. I know it is not a coil issue. I have swapped the #1 coil with the #4 coil and I get the same cylinder 1 error codes. I thought it could be a faulty switch or relay feeding the injector. Once it gets hot and the power is removed it won't make a connection again until it cools down. As far as I can tell there are no single relays or switches that feed only the #1 cylinder. I am now thinking it could be a faulty solenoid in the #1 injector. Like a relay, once it gets hot and the power is removed it will not operate correctly again until it cools off. I'm hoping this isn't a harness issue or and ECU issue.

Does anyone out here have any ideas or suggestions on a path to follow to get this beautiful Lincoln back on the road? I'm trying not to give my local Lincoln dealer their next lease payment on their new shop.

Welcome to the LOG

Both codes pertain to cylinder #1.
Swapping coils and the problem still persists, means the problem is NOT the coil. And it is still in the #1 cylinder.
Neither of those codes pertain to just the coil.

P0201 - injector circuit malfunction. The PCM grounds the circuit to fire off the injector. If there is no current in that ground circuit for several times the code will be generated.
Causes
Faulty fuel injector 1
Fuel Injector 1 harness is open or shorted
Fuel Injector #1 circuit poor electrical connection

The easiest to check would be to see if the connector is securely fastened. Beyond that look at the wiring harness to the injector.

P0301 - cylinder #1 random misfire.
First check to see if the above fixes both codes
Causes
Faulty Spark Plug #1
Clogged or faulty Fuel Injector #1
Faulty Ignition Coil #1
Fuel Injector #1 harness is open or shorted
Fuel Injector #1 circuit poor electrical connection
Ignition Coil #1 harness is open or shorted (You eliminated this possibility)
Ignition Coil #1 circuit poor electrical connection (You eliminated this possibility)
Insufficient cylinder 1 compression
Incorrect fuel pressure
Intake air leak

It may be an electrical issue. And that electrical issue may impact the fuel injector.

Good luck
