I do know some people that work all the time. But, they do it because it\'s the only way for them to not drink and keep themselves out of trouble.
that sounds horrible. why are you still doing that profession then?
Believe me, I\'m looking for alternatives. I have a plan in mind for a business that might work out decently, but the timing isn\'t right just yet. That won\'t start making any real money until the fall. At the same time, the decision may be getting made very soon - The department was told to vacate our current building in the next 2 weeks... And the new one isn\'t ready yet. I just have a funny feeling this is a good time for a staff shakeup.

Turns out... That funny feeling I had was bang-on. They decided that my \"services were no longer required\" and notified me of that on June 1st. That wasn\'t a problem, as I now am eligible to continue bleeding them through unemployment. However... They told HR that my last day was on May 18th... Hmm. Seems that there is a discrepancy there.

Anybody have any suggestions on how to handle that?

It could have just been a simple typo, are they letting you go this friday? You can try to sue them but at the end of the day your wallet will be lighter and you wont get anywhere. My suggestion is you should take care of unemployment right away, and get cracking on honing your resume and interview skills. There are always jobs out there for the people that want them.

I\'ve managed to get myself three concurrent jobs (1 FT, 1 PT, 1 Contract). If you know how to write software, it\'s not a bad market right now. Of course, I\'m so busy I can barely enjoy myself but once the contract is up I\'ll be back to normal.

A guy I work with told me something interested today. He said \"you know Greg, there are always jobs. Back when I was broke and had barely enough money to feed myself let alone my kids, I went out and hustled my ass off\". I asked him what he ment, and he said \"I would walk/ride my bike/get a ride with anyone and anytime I saw anyone moving stuff, unloading stuff, mowing a lawn, etc I would go up and ask them if they needed any help.\" He told me that he went in every store/shop/place of business for miles every day until someone gave him work, even if it was for 10$. It actually made me think about how when it comes down to it, there are always jobs and things you can do to make money if you put a little bit of work into it.

The problem with some people, not saying this about Jim, is some people are so damn lazy they don\'t want to take the time to go out and look. And then they don\'t want to do the work that is out there.

I hear so often these kids that graduate from where I work talking about how there aren\'t jobs out there. So I tell them to get just any job. They then tell me something about spending $ on an education to go work some crappy job not in their field. Well, working some crappy job is better than no damn job at all!

Jim, good luck finding a job. I hope you aren\'t like the above example.

Well at some point people will have to do something. There is a point where people will get a job that they even hate because it means an income. Many kids still have their parents to fall back on, so they don\'t take things as serious as they should. Granted it can happen with adults too. A good friend of mine bought a house with his mother a year or two ago. ITs turned into a huge nightmare because his mother is so irresponsible its not funny. She got 34,000 in a settlement from her mothers estate, and she managed to blow that in 3 months and have absolutely nothing to show for it. She started her realestate company back up, but she has sold one house in 7 months. It is at the point where my friend has been paying the complete mortage, water bill, gas/electric, etc for 3 months now, and soon to be 4 months. She literally laughs when my friend yells at her to go out and get a job. She has turned down numerous jobs that paid 13 an hour because it wasn\'t enough money, and because it would take away from time she wants for her realestate company. I think when she gets kicked out in the next few months that she might just reconsider getting a job thats \"below her\".

if it came down to it, i would work a $13 an hour job! i;d just let my house go and move into an apartment, or even with my in-laws if i had to, as long as my family was still fed and my son had clean clothes. shit, both my parents worked 2 jobs for a good amount of time that i was growing up...plus my mom was gonig to school! my parents didnt buy their first house until they were 38 years old...i was 24 when i bought my home...its all about responsibility and being mature about the choices in your lives.

geeze

There\'s an awful lot of luck in there too. Don\'t discount that.

I\'m not dead yet either... But if I get any more of this \"compassionate conservative\" love from the Moral Majority... I think I\'m going to start hurting people.

So... I was dismissed on June 1, yet only paid until May 18. Hmm. There is a problem here, but no resolution on that yet.
Was supposed to get paid the balance for teaching adjunct (owed $525 due to a split-class with the dept chair that I ended up teaching the whole thing) and was supposed to get that \"promptly\"... STILL have not been paid.

Filed for unemployment.... This is the best one: Got told that since the university was founded by a church... They don\'t have to pay unemployment (seems to be confirmed by the IRS) and therefore... Please politely piss off, thanks. Yay for them continuing to get away with EVERYTHING. :banghead: I haven\'t gotten in contact with a lawyer yet, still doing my research and the outlook is getting darker for the likelihood of getting ANYTHING out of them. They don\'t have to pay unemployment, they don\'t have to pay taxes, they don\'t have to pay overtime... Yet the employees get to be screwed with 100-hour-weeks AND taxed, then when they are gone, they get screwed again.

I knew I would learn a lot by having an actual college professor job, but I never expected to learn that I will NEVER work for another religious organization again.

*sigh* Oh well, things are starting to look a bit better at the moment, I\'m picking up some gig work that is paying a little (not too much yet) and hopefully my gear rental business will start ripping it up again now that I can put time into it.

We are heading to Hawaii tomorrow for Ella to meet her grandma and aunts and uncle. I am a little nervous about traveling with a 7 & 1/2 month old.
Wow... I\'m jealous for the trip to Hawaii.

But why would traveling with a 7.5 month old be a problem? They fit perfectly into the overhead compartments at that size.
