Not neccessary. Turbo is driven by exhaust pressure. As pressure goes up, it spools up. As the exhaust pressure goes down, the turbo spins down to match exhaust speed. All you do is let the engine IDLE for a couple or three minutes to allow turbo to wind down WITH oil pressure. No Problem. That\'s why I tape the stack over on equipment when I move it farther then twenty or thirty miles. Air rushing down the stacks will spin the turbo blades, much like it spins the wheels on bicycles in carriers. And you run the machine about a half-hour and the turbo blows.

Hot shutdowns are a problem, sure. But this wasn\'t anything like a hot shutdown, the exact opposite. Also, this is a Variable Vane turbo, so if the vanes don\'t react fast enough, the center shaft *could* overspeed and wreck itself again. I would know b/c the boost would drop to zero, unlike when the computer goes into limp mode and drops the boost to 5psi or so... But still. I WILL have external gauges on this as soon as I get it back.

Should be this week or so, they are just waiting on some bolts.

Oh, a VARIABLE Pitch turbo. Yeah, these are problematic in that they are an Abomination Before the Gods of K.I.S.S. Good luck.....

every since Dodge started using the Variable Geometry Turbos on the diesel trucks, they have been nothin but problems. they started with them on the 6.7L diesels in the 2007.5 MY, i have had at least 15 customers with trucks that had to replace the turbo. wierd

Hmm, interesting. I don\'t know how the Cummins is treating the turbo, but I have a Garrett T15 (I think) on my 2005 VM Motori diesel powered Liberty. I haven\'t heard about too many turbo failures on other Liberty CRDs. But with an installed base of only about 20k in the USA, there aren\'t that many on the message boards that I am on. You would have to check in the system to see the demand from the suppliers. I think Tanner said (back in Feb) that the weekly demand was only a handful... But if the Cummins are using the same turbo, that skews the number.

On the main Liberty board that I am on, I have heard of 4 different turbo failures, and one of those happened at almost the same time mine grenaded.

What kinds of problems are the trucks experiencing?

Can someone please tell me why the last bazillion posts are about cars?? This is the non-car thread.

Heather, want to buy another Jeep? The 97 is running slightly better than your experiences with the 96, as long as you use the gas pedal as an on-or-off button and not a partial... :D

Seriously, I\'m about to shoot this thing. Chrysler\'s crap design linked two sensors (which I have now replaced) and the car STILL runs horridly if it is only under part-throttle. Like just barely into the throttle to maintain about 50mph (which is OF COURSE the speed that everyone drives here) makes it buck and misfire, and I can hear the gas detonating in the exhaust pipe... So the timing (that I can\'t set or adjust) is way off. Probably retarded into almost the exhaust stroke.

Since Mike used to work for them, could you ask him if he knows whether or not there is a way to check the base timing? Or some connector that needs to be unhooked when adjusting the distributor... I\'ve replaced the crank position sensor and the cam position sensor... And I\'m STILL getting an \"intermittent loss of crank sensor\" code, which it wasn\'t giving me at all before I replaced the cam sensor. I replaced the cranks sensor first, then the cam sensor b/c of the code \"no crank / cam sensor signal\" (nice to lump BOTH into one code) after simply replacing the plugs. The combo code didn\'t change between the replacements, which is why I ordered the cam sensor.

The thing is... It runs fine as long as you have your foot in it. Idling, it will sit sometimes for 5 minutes without any problems, other times it won\'t go 30 seconds before the engine starts stumbling. Try adding gas when it is doing that, and its like you didn\'t do anything at all... Then like flicking a switch, VROOM and it is back. No rhyme or reason that I can figure out.

LMK if Mike has any suggestions, cuz I\'m about out of ideas other than shooting it.

Ok, I may have finally fixed this thing. At least from THIS problem.

Just for giggles, I unlocked the distributor and tried adjusting it blind. Since the stupid car won\'t let me change the timing anyway (unless Mike tells you that YES, there is some sort of \"spout\" connector like on the Mark VIIs that disables the computer\'s timing advance) it keeps pushing the timing around between 12 and 17 degrees at idle according to the computer. No matter what the position of the distributor is also, apparently.

After just a twist counter-clockwise (should be advancing) the silly thing actually seemed to idle correctly and FINALLY wasn\'t misfiring into the exhaust at the tiniest input of throttle.

Of course letting it idle for a couple minutes after I got back, it started warming up toward hot (could be idling in 93 degree heat)... and after I shut it off... It blew the spring on the radiator cap.
Oh joy, something else to replace.

I\'ll see what he says. Lol

On a positive note Matt\'s (Pantera) wife had thier little girl yesterday. Claire was born somewhere in cheese-land weighing 5lbs+. Tiny thing. But healthy.

Can they see the antler roots on the ultrasound yet Vicki? :stickpoke

Thanks Heather. Any help he can offer would be great, it looks like I\'m going to have to go back in there and adjust it again... Today I finally got it up to real highway speeds for a bit, and the stupid thing was knocking almost continuously. Not too loud, but still. So it looks like I overshot the advance and now I have to retard it.

It would be really helpful if the stupid service manual would tell me HOW to set the timing instead of just saying the stock timing is 10 deg... And that it can\'t be adjusted. If the dist column isn\'t keyed (it isn\'t) then YEA, it can be adjusted! Stupid chryslers.
