Vicki,
I can\'t find the begining of this, but can you give me more info? What kind of behavior are you seeing? Why are her grades low, etc...
I only ask because my 14 year old was misdiagnosed for about 8 years. 1st he was just a rambuntious boy, then for about 6 years it was add, now it turns out he has something like aspergers and a couple other problems. I put up with the acing out in class, faiing almost exerything, but somehow squeaking through, him being picked on by students, teachers, everything.
What type of meeting did you have? was it an IEP/ If not, request one. There is so much help out there.
Brittany has been diagnosed with ADD. She doesn\'t act out in class, she just doesn\'t seem to be able to concentrate for long periods of time. She has also stuggled with reading for as long as they\'ve been teaching it to her. She was held back in the 1st grade, did better the second time around. Struggled terribly last year in 2nd grade, but her teacher was out a lot bacause she had to deal with medical issues and we had 3 hurricanes in the beginning of the year that tripped us up some. She is in the 3rd grade, but she did not get promoted there. She was placed there because if she fails the fcat she will be held back again and they didn\'t want her to be held back too many times.
She works really hard in class, and after school. Her homework takes her anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours a night. It should only take her 30 minutes every night. When she reads, she processes very slow. I have the same issue, and have managed to overcome the problems associated because when I was in school they were willing to actually help kids (of course we are talking 20 years ago).
The meeting we were in was for the ESE (Exceptional Student Education) committee. They determines based on her IQ score (below average) and the testing of her skills that she doesn\'t qualify because the test scores she had fell within an \"acceptable\" range for her IQ. In my opinion, the schools need to look at the kids having these sorts of problems and offer assistance to them to see if they are able to improve the skills. I know they offer tutoring to gifted students, why should the smart kids get more help, they should be offering that assistance to the students who really need it!
And Charlie, I used to think she was just lazy about doing her work, but I sit with her every night to get homework done. If it was just laziness it wouldn\'t be so frustrating. We\'ll sit down and start reading something and then all the sudden she starts rambling off some story she \"has to tell me\" in mid sentence. Her teacher and I have been working real closely with her this year. And it\'s not laziness, it\'s the inability to keep her mind focused on the work at hand. And some of it is because on timed tests she freaks out cause she can\'t read all the questions and think about the answers in time to finish so she opts to just bubble in any answer (that is if she is working on a multiple choice test) and sometimes she just doesn\'t answer if they are looking for a sentence because she doesn\'t have time to read and comprehend the question asked and think of an answer to it.
It\'s been a real struggle. I just think the school is screwing her out of opportunities because of silly rules that limit what they can do. I\'m mad, her teacher is mad, she is even mad about it because she knows that she wont pass without extra help and she\'s already been held back once. It\'s just frustration to us all!
Anyways.... now my novelette is done... everyone back to free posts!
