hands free liftgate

Hi Pete. There really isn't anything to "fix" as that is the way it is now manufactured. I did post in another thread that a member of the Ford Explorer forum was able to get his to work after buying some parts and using FORScan. There is nothing coming from Ford to my knowledge. It is what it is.

Had Ford customer service manager on the phone for an hour yesterday. He was digging through the paperwork on his end and said, that everything is installed, including the sensors that detect the foot swipes underneath, with the only thing missing is this module/chip to make it operational. I told him that i was told when this module becomes available, Lincoln will install it free of charge when taking possession of the vehicle, regardless of the $70 delete credit shown on the window sticker and we been waiting....Why would they install sensors and whatever else if they never intended to install the missing module. He said he'll check into it and get back to me as he gave me a case #.

This was never intended to be brought back. Getting a new module does not make this work. You do need a new module and then Forscan is needed to update the BCM. Somebody in the explorer forum figured it out. I did get this to work on my Aviator.

Slightly off but can you retro fit electric tailgate to mk1 1999 to 2002 ?

I have to admit that recently doing stuff behind my car where my foot got underneath and next thing I know I'm getting smacked in the face by the hatchback.... this has to be one of the most poorly executed 'luxury enhancements' that the idiots thought of. It never works easily when I want it to, and oftimes works when I don't want it to. Anyone else with my view?!?!?

Had same prob w/my Aviator Grand Touring. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to getting it to work consistently. Finally figured out key needs to be within 3’ of tailgate for it to work so if key is IN the car & you want to use hands free to pack your trunk for a trip you’re out of luck. I would have expected they designed this feature to work when key is in the car but nope.

It is handy in one way as you can store a spare keyfob in the back without it being detected.

I had the same issue and found that if I was using the 2nd key, it would not work. But....if I used the main (passive) key, it works 100% of the time.
From the Owners Manual:

Hands-Free Feature (If Equipped)
Make sure you have the passive key within 3 ft (1 m) of the liftgate.
