I have a 2.7L dual turbo. Has anyone had this issue when turning the car off? Motor fan continues to run for a few seconds, which is probably normal, but then when fan shuts off a slow whiring sound is heard, like a fan blade slowly turning and stopping, and then a loud "click". Then the noises stop. Video with sound in this link. New video by Peter Wynn

I'm not familiar with the Continental turbo engines but I've owned several other turbos and what you describe could be the noise of a pump to cool the turbo after the engine is turned off which is a common feature of turbo engines. This prevents turbo bearing failures.

The click sounds like the fan relay disengaging.

The fan does sound like it has a lil squeak in it. Which would be a bearing that may not have enough lube. The engine cooling fan motors are sealed, so not much to do other than replace if it stops working.

BTW back to the turbo. Those things can spin at many thousands of RPM. They are pumped with engine oil and most have a coolant line to keep the heat down. With the engine off, the oil flow stops. Plus the turbo is extremely hot. If I had a turbo engine, when it is time to shut the engine down I will let it idle of a second or two. Just a second can extend the turbo life a lot. One thousand one.

Thank you. Pretty much what I was thinking, but when I played the video to my Ford dealer they acted like they never heard anything like that before. I might take it to the Lincoln dealer where I bought it. I bought the extended warranty on it, so I hope it's covered.

Most service contracts cover the electric engine cooling fan.

Sending a vid to the service department isn't going to get you much in my opinion.
The warranty states you have to present your vehicle.

If the bearing is going out, it will not get better.
Going to the dealership and presenting the vehicle is your ticket to limiting your liability.
Even if they say they can not verify the issue, DO get paper work to the extent that they were unable to verify any abnormal sound after the engine was shut off.

With that document, you did your job. Any failure after that point could be argued that the problem was there. You presented the vehicle. And (within a reasonable time) there was a part failure. (Fan motor)

Now if it fails 4 years from now and you have 60,000 miles on the odometer. That may not be covered.

Thanks for the advice. I have an extended Ford warranty so I'm covered for quite some time. I don't think the issue will be the coverage time, as long as the part itself is covered.

I only sent them the video to see if they could identify the problem, especially since it probably won't make that noise if I leave the car with them. Now they know what to listen for, unless of course they've had to make a repair like this before.

If it were me, before the standard warranty expires I would go in and get it documented.

Thanks for the advice. The original warranty already expired. It's a 2018 Continental. Unless it has to do with pollution control, which may extend beyond the original 4/60 warranty.
