The screen on my recently purchased 2017 Continental appears cloudy (vs the crystal clear picture I get on my 2019 RAM truck). Initially I thought maybe the camera lens might be made of that kind of material that tends to get cloudy with age as you see on some older car headlight housings. Has anybody else had an issue like this? I took the car to the dealer and they said the camera lens was find and the picture was what it was.

Hi CapeFlyer. First...To give us a better idea of what the problem may be, would you post another photo that does not have a severe sun-glare (looks like from a car in the parking lot) shining into the camera lens?
Next...How recently did you purchase your Continental? Was the view like this when you purchased it?

Also, if you are still within the 4 year/50,000 mile New Car Warranty and are not happy with your Dealership's Service Department, call Lincoln Concierge to see how they can assist you.

Good luck.

I had the same problem and it was replaced with no questions asked. The service manager said it is a common problem.

Hey Boonrag
Thanks for this info - I thought it might be but expected more straight talk from the Lincoln dealer when I brought it to their service department and asked about a fix on two separate warranty visits. I’ve been in enough friend’s Mercedes and BMWs - as well as my RAM Laramie - to know there was a quality problem with the camera.

FWIW: today I called Lincoln about purchasing an extended factory warranty.
Additional 4 yrs quoted at $3,081. So I have to question is it worth that kind of $$
when they don’t acknowledge and fix a common known issue?

Perhaps this is discussed on another thread but wondering is the Lincoln extended factory worth the money??

Hi CapeFlyer. As with most things, there will be varying opinions on whether an ESP is worth it or not. My opinion is...Yes, it is worth it.

Price out your LincolnProtect ESP plan at this Dealership/online seller instead: Save $$ on Genuine Ford Protect Extended Service Plans (ESP)

I have shopped extensively, both online and at my local Lincoln/Ford Dealerships, for my last 4 Lincoln, Mercury and Ford vehicles. That Dealership/seller has always offered the lowest prices.

Next lowest was always this Dealership/seller: Ford Extended Warranty - Geniune Ford ESP Sales

My guesstimate is you will save ~$1,000+ by purchasing online from one of those sellers.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

Some of the replacement parts are ridiculously expensive. I've been told a camera alone is $1,500 plus labor to replace. Do you know how many cameras are on the car? And all the other goodies that make it a Continental? How many switches and motors are in the seats, for instance? If you are planning to keep the car into the zone where things break and wear out, the ESP should come into its own. If you're just going to flip it when the next Big Thing comes along, then nahhh. Your call.

Hey CapeFlyer
I have a 2019 Black Label and the quality of the backup camera image was worse than yours. I agree that at its best the Lincoln cameras are far behind other car brands. Sad to see the new Hyundai Sonata blow away $70000 Lincolns in this area. I hope you find a dealer to work with you. Write corporate if you get nowhere.

The front and back cameras on my 2018 are a little worse. Reminds me I need to get it to the dealer.

I wouldn't bet on it. Those plans are designed to make money. Without knowing the rate of failure for the parts, it's impossible to make an educated decision.

I don't buy extended "warranties" (If you have to buy it, it's not a warranty, it's a service agreement). They sell them to make a profit, and they have all the failure statistics. I don't bet against the house. CapeFlyer was quoted $3k for the ESP. I've never spent that much for repairs on any vehicle I've ever owned.

They are relentless in selling the extended stuff. I've been getting calls daily from them for 6 months on a car I don't even own anymore. That's how profitable those plans actually are.

Thanks for your input.

I purchased the car about two months ago. It has 38k miles and is still under factory warranty for two more months.

I immediately noticed the backup camera issue. And it is not only the clouding but, indeed, the glare which a good camera should compensate for. Shouldn't I be able to see what I’m backing into when backing up west at sundown :)? . My neighbor can in his Audi and I can with my 2019 RAM pick up.

Which brings me back to the issue of is the camera defective or do all of the of them of this vintage have the clouding and glare problem?

I’ll give Lincoln Concierge a call.

Thx

Hi CapeFlyer. Can tell you that I do not have that issue with my 2018 MKZ.

Can also verify that I do need to clean the lens every once in a while, otherwise it will be less clear and amplify glare, just like a dirty windshield.

And there was a reason I asked about a photo with no glare. Comparing a non-glare photo with the one you first provided (w/obvious glare) may help diagnose the issue (i.e. scratches, dirt, lens clarity/cloudiness etc.)

Let us know how you make out with Lincoln and good luck.

I called Lincoln Concierge - Their answer: Take it to another dealer for a second opinion....

Hi CapeFlyer. Hope the second Dealer can diagnose and properly correct the issue.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

Got used to the muddy camera.
I am quite sure that once I get the time to take a good look how to extract the thing from the car easily it would be a matter of wiping the lens assembly part by part.

The Continental makes me see it as a very well executed comfort oriented hot rod. Especially the 3.0 AWD. It behaves so well for a 400+ hp car and in the same time it's drivers and engineer's car. Fast and effortless.
But let me stress on the hot rod part again. It's made from the best of Ford parts bin. I dont think anything will break down sooner than the best industry standard. Somewhere I read an official statement it's made for 200k miles or 20 years service life. For comparison Toyota Land Cruiser 100 is made for 25 years service life. Owning one for 15 years I testify that's getting annoying.

BTW, my side cameras are also muddy.

Actually I don't care.

I've had 8 of these twin-turbos (vehicles) the past 9 years and never had a major problem with any of them within the first 3 years. Only one time did I have a car in the shop for 3 days and it was a service department goof at Ford that was the main problem.

My 2018 Navigator front camera is cloudy. The lens cover is not dirty, and the wiper fluid function works fine. How do you get rid of the cloudy view? Did moisture get in there, and caused some condensation or is it a faulty camera?
