Drove my 2005 Lincoln Town Car yesterday morning and on my short trip my service engine soon light came on . Steady and not blinking. First thought I had was gas cap. Took it off this morning and screwed it back on. Started car, and light still on. While it was running I could hear a ticking pop every once in a while. Not a steady pop just every few seconds. Sound was coming from engine area. Not a backfire. I’m thinking spark plug coil. Ideas?
Thanks

This light is usually triggered at maintenance that is due. Do nothing over time and the light start blinking. Oil change, filter(s) change or other maintenance.

How cold was it outside when this happened?
How cold was the engine when this happened?
The next step should be to do maintenance and pull codes.

Coils are electrical. They either work or do not work. Not much middle ground.

A suggestion on the fuel filler cap, treat the rubber o ring seal with a light coating of (rubber/plastic/vinyl) lubricant. That seal gets squeezed frequently and takes a beating.

Action

Temp is 71 down the here in Texas. Just started engine and in a few minutes I started hearing the click sound every 15 or 20 seconds. Was not at operating temperature.

Do you have a code reader?

+1
Have the code read. Advance auto parts, etc. do it for free if you don't have a code reader yourself

Then you could post back here or look up the meaning of the error code online, we would be able to help more with the problem
