24 Nautilus R2 Hybrid: Transmission "slip" when accelerating from stop

Bringing this back up to see if anyone else feels this... I have not had time to get it back to the dealer to have it looked at. "Slipping" doesn't seem to be any worse, but is definitely noticeable and annoying.

Check the rumble in the rear thread. I hear tump tump tump at low speeds then it goes away.

What you are feeling is the Engine firing up at the same time as pulling away from a dead stop. Feel it all the time not to worry.

Agreed, its a little bump feeling. Had a Maverick Hybrid for a while did the same thing.

When you think about whats happening its amazing its not more pronounced. You have an electric motor propelling the car through a pair of planetary gear sets when the gas engine comes on and it has to use a 2nd electric motor to either hold the sun gear of one of the gear sets or use the gas engine output to charge the battery. This has to start instantly just after the smaller motor starts the engine.

I would think a lot of calibration work went into synchronizing the speed match to lessen the bump. With no torque converter (fluid coupling) it could really feel bad.

Think Fords failed attempt at dual clutch in the Focus.

Turn hill hold off and see what happens. Just noticed my Corsair doing similar. I was like why when I put it in drive doesn’t it roll forward anymore ? Why when I step on the gas doesn’t it go for a second ? I accidentally turned on hill hold so it engaged the emergency brake and when you step on the gas it takes a second to disengage so it feels like a thud and slip.

I know exactly what you’re talking about and I’ve only had the car 2 days. I’ve never had a hybrid so I assumed it was electric to gas change. I tested it and took off at a granny pace and didn’t experience it. When I hit the gas like I normally do in everyday driving I feel it every time. Let us know what you find.

It seems to get worse and only happens from a car off stop. This last time I did it I read the engine a little bit more and you can hear the engine revving. It’s just not engaging. It almost seems like a low transmission fluid issue. I’ve told my Lincoln dealer and they could not replicate it.

I think we may have a transmission brick on our hands if they don’t figure this out quick.

Its likely the low torque targets or traction control preventing wheel spin. Low speed is primarily electric driven since the gear ratio is fixed and the electric motors can only gear down the engine so far. It might be able to drive on the gas engine from a stop but it wont do it in a hurry since it has to juggle so many things in an instant.

On my '24 Nautilus Hybrid reserve, the slight acceleration thump I believe may be the changeover from electric to gas engine engaging. Not a mechanic just guessing.

Exactly. No clutches to "slip" in the eCVT so generally a failure is broken gear or a bearing eating itself. Either it wont drive at all or it will make awful noises. There is an anti shock system to reduce the feel of the gas engine startup/changeover that looks like a clutch but it can still be felt at times. there is drivetrain lag due to programming (either intentional or unintended) That hopefully we see future revisions reduce.

Try your start off in excite mode a number of times as the engine runs more often and start on take off is different.
Another test in normal mode is accelerate from a stop very slowly. It will remain in electric drive a while longer before the engine starts.

Yeah I thought it was a strange sensation because of the eCVT, but that's the only way I can describe the feeling. And it makes no audible sound. It's definitely not the seat, but I am going to check to see if something is shifting in spare area and I'll ask about the torque damper next time it's in for service (if it doesn't get worse). Thanks.

Call your salesperson before you bring it in for service, let him know your concerns & when you will be in. I am sure it can be arranged for you to test drive a similar vehicle to see if duplicated. If not satisfied, ask service to have someone test drive with you so they can experience what you are feeling.

Just put my first 100 miles on mine and I definitely notice what’s being described. I’d call it more of a subtle thump when the dinosaur kicks in. Nothing alarming but certainly a different experience. I’ve even noticed it at a lesser degree while sitting idle just trying to learn all the features.
