This map you posted was very similar movement that the Glovis Chorus exhibited near Yantai. It had been due to Yantai but then had a very similar back and forth pattern (I referred to it as circling because that's the terminology we'd be most familiar with at an airport). I think we will need a few more hours to be certain but the Glovis Chorus hasn't really sped up beyond 3 knots which doesn't seem to me to align with a redirect back to Portland. Also it's still on a 209 degree heading which isn't exactly towards Portland. But then again, this isn't the "circling" pattern I've seen with other ships.A good breakdown. I will comment that the initial turn inland was on a path directly toward the inlet that would take it to Portland. And we know it was still scheduled for Portland at that time on the tracking sites.
As for now, it couldn't show up at Tacoma before 1700, so it has no choice. Here's another ship I was tracking. It wandered for almost two days before continuing in to New Westminster.

But like you said. We'll know in a few hours.
I would imagine that by 5PM Eastern time we should see something more definitive.
