My 2023 Aviator came with the deleted Hands Free Liftgate, and I thought I’d see if I could get it working. I noticed antennas, module, and wiring is all in place behind rear bumper. Module seems to communicate with scan tool. I noticed the module says dummy on it. 2020 to 2023 Aviators take same module, and don’t need programming. Just need LIN line activation. I figured I’d give it a shot and replace module. Replaced module and had activation performed. Still no go and tabled for now. Anybody else have this looked into? It’s a nice feature if your used to using it. Which my wife was on her previous vehicle.

Hi Dguffin. Lincoln has stated they will be installing the necessary chip/module/equipment in affected vehicles when they become available again from the suppliers.

Until then, I do not believe there is a workaround. If there was, Lincoln would have installed and activated it themselves.

Keep us updated and good luck.

I have heard that since we got a credit on window sticker for this feature, that it will never be activated by Lincoln. Conflicting information. Hopefully we get it back at some point.

I was at Fair Oaks Lincoln last week and the service manager told me the necessary wiring, etc., for the Navigators is not installed, so the hands free being activated later is not going to happen. According to him.

My salesman told me the same thing about it not going to happen. While I've read posts about owners receiving info about the required parts being available for the rear HVAC and entertainment, nothing has been posted regarding the liftgate. BTW, my order did not indicate a credit for the liftgate.

Hi peterk9. I hear what you are saying and perhaps that will turn out to be correct.

However, some owners have actually received and posted letters from Lincoln specifically stating the hands-free liftgate will be added to their vehicles when the necessary chips/components are available at a later date. Perhaps this will vary by vehicle? Who knows at this point.

Also, the OP (Dguffin) stated he checked and all the wiring, harnesses and a "dummy" module are there behind the bumper. So if they are correct, that would lead me to believe Lincoln is equipping the vehicles with everything necessary to simply add the real module when it becomes available later.

And, just through experience, I don't count on salespeople having the latest, or even the correct, information...🙃😉

I hope for the sake of all involved that Lincoln will add the chip/module later.

Good luck.

That makes more sense, and I tend to want to believe that versus what the service manager told me. We were all told there was a microchip shortage, not a wiring harness shortage. We'll see.

I hope that's the case since I use the feature often. When I mentioned a possible late fix for this he said it won't happen and handed me several pages of paperwork which I did not read in detail since we were 'building' my Aviator. Time will tell but I'm not sure how much time I have left. :D

I use mine a lot as well. It was very finicky on my 2020 Nav, but the 2022 works much easier and better. Love it.

Hi BL. Yes, those are also my thoughts. If Lincoln had no intentions of adding the chip/module later, they would have saved the money and not installed the wiring harnesses, a dummy module and other proprietary hands-free liftgate components. etc.

I'm hoping it works out well for the sake of all involved.

Good luck.

I take most of what the service manager tells me with a grain of salt.

The credit is for our inconveniences and is supposed to make us feel better till the needed parts become available and dealer installed at no cost. Ford will notify us when that time is here.

I read that a member of the Explorer Forum with a 2023 ST was able to get it working with a module and FORScan. I don't know if the FORScan values for the Aviator are the same.

I'm posting on here so I end up following this thread. I want to do the same to my wife's '22 Corsair once it is figured out.

I have a hard time understanding why at this point Ford is still dealing with this parts shortage. Are they using a chip/camera/part no other manufacturer uses and it is an obsolete design?

Hi icemantx. All auto manufacturers are having the same/similar issues with various parts/commodities. However, most of us do not hear about the problems of other manufacturers because we own or are looking to purchase a Lincoln, and are therefore on a Lincoln Owners website.

Try to factory order a vehicle from another manufacturer, and spend time on their enthusiast websites, and you will find the same parts/commodity shortage issues.

Good luck.
