2022 Climate Control PRoblems

There was a post on this subject several weeks ago and I made a casual reply that mine did the same thing but eventually it kicked in and cooled things down.
Since then I am finding that it blows cold for a while and then there is a lot of fan noise and a cool breeze comes form the vents but it simply does not adequately cool...there is very little cold air blowing out the vents. Sometimes while driving I can turn it totally off and then back on and it puts out tons of cold air and yet sometimes that does not work. Too many controls, fan speed, temps, auto, max, RCAIR, passenger/driver....and no clear instructions that I can find.

I recall the same situation with the heat in winter. Just another feature they try to make as difficult as possible. And I HATE setting in the thing with the motor running trying to scroll through the manual to find the solution....So call me lazy, OK, but does anyone have any tips?

I run mine in AUTO at 72° 99% of the time. Works great.

Hi A Charles. I don’t recall from your other posts…Is your 2022 still within the 4 year/50,000 mile New Vehicle Warranty? If yes, I would recommend you schedule a service appointment to have the issue properly diagnosed and corrected.

There are so many variables to consider in a situation like this, especially since you state you are not very familiar with the system, that I hesitate to blind Internet diagnose without a lot more information.

I’m sure other members will also jump in to help, so keep us updated and good luck.

Step 1...find the owners manual on line.
Step 2...locate the section dealing with the climate controls.
Step 3...print about 5 pages,
Step 4...For maximum quick cooling it says, "press the AUTO button", set temps to the desired level (I set it at 60 degrees) with 3 bars on the Auto button for the highest fan speed.

OK, sure enough that resulted in good cool air forcefully blowing from the vents.
So far so good!

The question now would be if I were to drive it someplace for a short trip will it continue to blow forcefully cool?

I'll find out tomorrow when I have someplace to go.

BTW, Yes, it is still under warranty and if this does not prove to work I'll get it to the dealership next week.

Thanks for the prompt responses. BTW, I have been to this point before and after a short trip the fan speed remains "high", the air is cool BUT not at all forcefully coming out of the vents. And yes, I'm selecting the dash vents ONLY.

Hi A Charles. You’re still not quite up to speed on how the Automatic Climate Control system works, so I’ll try to hit some basics. On a related note, this was one reason why I stated earlier that there are too many variables when trying to blind Internet diagnose a situation like this.

First- When set to full AUTO (just press the Auto button, choose High/3 illuminated lights, set a temperature and leave it alone), the system will keep the temperature at the set/desired temperature. Therefore, it will constantly adjust fan speed, air temperature blown through the registers, humidity etc., on its own. So…No, when set to full AUTO, the fan will not blow on high the entire time, unless it needs to in order to obtain and hold the set temperature.

Next- Those three lights/settings (varies by display type) you think are displaying fan speed, do not display the actual fan speed running at the time.
Those 3 lights/settings display your choice of the Maximum fan speed you wish to allow the system to achieve at any particular time.
- So when you have High chosen (3 lights illuminated), the system has full authority to run a fan speed anywhere between low and full high.
- If Medium is chosen (two lights are lit), the system is limited to running allowed fan speeds between low and medium.
- If Low is chosen (one light), the system is limited to only running an allowed Low fan speed.

In addition, the fan speeds available are not only 3 (Low, Medium, High). There are actually approximately 7 or so fan speeds in manual modes, and a virtually infinite number between Low and High, when the system is set to Auto and High is chosen.

Why these settings? A few reasons are…Some people are sensitive to noise, or want quiet at one point or another, etc. etc.

Next- If you choose Auto, but then manually change the registers, fan speeds etc. you have now taken the system out of full AUTO.

As Black Label stated earlier, set it to AUTO, (and leave it on High (3 lights lit unless you want it quieter), choose a desired temperature, and leave it alone. If it’s not cool enough, lower the temperature a few degrees until you are comfortably cool.

That’s really only a basic, basic starter on the AUTO system alone. So take another look over those Owners Manual pages, ask any questions you may have, and I or someone else will try to help.

It can be daunting at first, but once you are comfortable that you know how to use the entire system, you can start to play with the manual settings (i.e. adjusting fan speeds, registers, AC, vented air only, etc. etc.).

And sorry for any typos, as I didn’t have time to fully proofread the full post.

My previous reply assumes the Automatic Climate Control System in your vehicle is working properly and you just need to get up to speed on its operation.

However, it does not rule out that alternatively…there could be a problem which needs service attention.

No matter if it is set to "AUTO" or set to manual it stops pushing a sufficient amount of cool air to cool the interior. Again, I get a lot of "blower noise" but a very small volume of cool air. But then maybe I'm messing up in switching from auto to manual along with temp settings. And saying blower noise I mean just that....lots of sound very little air movement.

YES, it is very possible there is a problem. There are so many other non repairable issues Lincoln gave me a 7 year 100,000 mile service agreement which is about $2300 at retail to "make me happy". I took it but remain totally dissatisfied with the vehicle.

Hi A Charles. Yes, it certainly is a lot of information.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to know what a questioner is aware of or not, whether they ever read the Owners Manual and how thoroughly/carefully…etc. etc.
Which again, was why I’m sometimes hesitant to offer blind Internet advice, since simply explaining how the AUTO system works (to eliminate possible user error), can take forever.

And another thought: Check to be sure all the dash registers are set to open, in case any were accidentally closed. That will certainly lead to noise with little to no air coming out.

And yes…once we manually change any setting other than the chosen temperature while in AUTO (i.e. fan speed, dash registers etc.), we lock in that setting and handicap the EATC/DEATC Climate Control system ability to adjust that setting.

Perhaps try this: Next drive, follow Black Label’s advice.

- Set it to AUTO (press the AUTO button).
- Be sure the AUTO, High/MAX allowable fan speed setting, which we previously discussed (3 bars/lights), is chosen.
- Set a suitable temperature. Black Label uses 72°, I usually choose a setting between 68°-70°, according to exterior ambient temps and whether my wife (who gets cold easier) is with me.

Then leave the system alone. Do not manually change fan speed. Do not manually change which registers (Dash/Defroster/Floor) the air is coming from etc.

Also keep in mind a few of the many other points which make explanations long, difficult and time consuming: First, it does take several minutes of driving for the system to begin strongly pumping cold air, which is why the Owners Manual recommends leaving the windows open for a minute or so of driving (if possible). This allows the very hot interior air to be eliminated more quickly.
Or alternatively…remote start the car with the Climate Control set to ON, at least several minutes before you are leaving. And/or use the Global Open/Close window function to open the windows a few minutes before you plan on leaving (if safe to do so).

Also keep in mind that very short drives may not allow the system enough time to cool the interior.

After all of that, if you feel the system is still not operating correctly, schedule a service appointment.

LOL...

I picked up my Navigator from the quick detailer recently and as I was driving away I noticed no air coming out the vents. It was hot out and I confirmed the AC was on and I thought to myself "oh no, they broke it!".

No, it wasn't broken, all the dash registers were closed.

Two short trips today. Outside temps in the mid 80's. Inside before starting 103.5.

Set AUTO, 3 bars and the temp at 63. Got cold air during both trips with no apparent problem. Both driver and passenger temps were set at 63. I did notice the blower speed seem to diminish slightly as things began to cool down so I suppose it was all just operator error! I don't know where the temp sensor is inside the vehicle but I can tell you it never approached 63 degrees but then the trips were short and it was really HOT inside. Longer trips would be the proof and setting the temp in the 70 degree range.

Something that I have noticed is that when set on AUTO after a short while the rear system comes on automatically so the temp sensors must be in both the front and the rear. With the rear system operating the comfort level in the front is much better. If I shut the rear system off it obviously remains warmer in the front. The discovery here is that the rear system will kick in automatically.

And so.....I thought I had it figured out with the help of others who posted. BUT NOT SO.

On a several hour run yesterday, setting at manual, temp set to "low" and fan speed on #7 (then reduced in steps to 6,5,and finally 4), depressing the "max" air button which lights up along with the "air" and "recirculated air" button it blew strong and cold for about an hour. Then with no changes in the settings the force of the air diminished to nothing and the blower sound was different, strong but muffled. Interior heated up and driving was most uncomfortable. I turned it off and drove with windows down for about an hour, then back on as noted above and it resumed putting out a strong flow of cold air. And as a side note, when I parked trying to shut it down I depressed the "air/max air" (which also turned off the "recirculated air" light) HOWEVER the fan continued full speed and the air was as cold as ever. I have also previously noted that the air/heat continues to run the fan unless you go to the display panel and X the fan which then shuts the fan down. ?????????????

Update....took another several hour trip today. Manual setting same as above. Cooled very well for about an hour then the cold air stopped and the tone of the blower changed. Drove all the way to the dealership, about another hour, in the 85 degree external temp with the air NOT blowing cold. Left it running and got the service writer to come out and witness the problem. He messed around and could NOT get it to cool so they documented the issue on the subsequently produced ticket. After he was in the piece of junk I turned it off and went in with him as he scheduled the service appointment...only a 5 week wait. Went back and started it up and then it resumed blowing cold. So there IS a problem somewhere. Now the question is will they find and fix it. Start stop does not work, embrace feature does not work, running boards do not deploy on first visit of the day, systems are all "dead" when I get in to it in the mornings. Just turned over 30,000 miles and these problems have been going on over a year.

And just did a quick google search finding that the start stop technology can cause the air condition to "shut down". It figures. Mine has not worked for well over a year.
