My Lincoln
2020 Aviator
Hello,

I am new to the forum so if this isn't in the right place please let me know.

The powertrain warranty expired at 70k and despite it only being over by 1500 miles Lincoln has denied any type of coverage for it. Has anyone had any success with getting Lincoln to budge on any of that? The cost of the repair is $6000. I have already had to have the cv axles replaced, both the left and the right front rocker arms and balljoints and not he transmission is shot. The trans started jerking when I was on the highway when it would downshift and then had problems with the lower gears. I had some of what I thought were to be harder shifts than were normal in the past but nothing like this. I haven't ever had a transmission go from fine to shot in 2 days with no real warnings. Anyone else had this happen?

When was the axles replaced? What was the symptoms, any chance you can say they were related, and possibly transmission related all along (I really doubt it, but just curious)

Ouch. Talk about some bad timing. Did you have the tranny looked at when you had those, what at the time, were seemingly harmless episodes (jerking, rough downshifts, etc.)? Hopefully the other issues you mentioned were warranty repairs and not out of pocket.

Welcome to the Forum James. 👋
Sorry to read about your transmission issue. I know that I have read some posts in the Explorer forum where owners were at times successful in getting some financial help. Did you contact Lincoln yourself, either directly or through the Concierge?

Just had the same thing happen with my MKC. Waiting on the verdict today to see how much Lincoln is willing to help out with for a $7000 new transmission! Leaves a bad taste about every looking at another Lincoln again!

I am currently having the same issue! Car goes in the shop tomorrow morning. Every time the transmission downshifts from 3rd to 2nd gear, the car jerks violently. Luckily I am only at 58K and still under my extended warranty. A family member who has experience with this transmission says it is a known issue. He's a police officer and a huge car buff. He says that a ton of police cars had to be recalled for faulty transmissions and my Aviator has the exact same transmission that goes in the police cars (or so I am told). I am dumping this car before my extended warranty expires. I've already had a ton of electrical issues with my safety systems and various check engine lights. I love the car but I can't risk it...

If you are still around, do you have any update on this issue??

Peter

Car goes into the dealership service tomorrow but it all depends on their timeline. I should know something in the next few days...hopefully.

My update request was meant for JamesGibbs1979 but I don't think the member is around any longer.
I had a 2020 Aviator that I returned when the lease was up and had no issues with it at all. Mind you it only had 7,200 miles on it after 47 months of driving. Hope they get yours fixed.

I just did a quick search - looks like there's (potentially) a recall on this. Motor trend published the following in Feb. of this year. https://www.motortrend.com/news/2022-2023-ford-f-150-bronco-explorer-lincoln-aviator-transmission-recall/#:~:text=Due to an issue with,a 2022 Q4 earnings call.

It appears to be for a limited period of time between manufacture dates of Nov. '22 through Jan '23.

As of a year ago, another article talked about Explorer transmission failures in the years of 2021 through 2022 - very few failures. Reports of hard shifts, however not so infrequent. Does the Ford Explorer Have Transmission Problems?

Interesting in that I found a TSB that describes my harsh and/or delayed shifts (from park to reverse) to a 'T' - chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2021/MC-10189869-0001.pdf It speaks to sticking internal valves that I would surmise don't open promptly on demand.

Does anyone know if we are the 10R60 or 80? The 60 stands for 600 Newton Meters (which bounds our 415 ft.lbs. of torque output)?

Too bad the OP dropped off - the TSB applies to 2020 vehicles. That may give him leverage.

According to my Detailed Vehicle Specifications sheets that my salesman printed out for me, my 2023 Aviator has a 10R60 (Ind=A).

Could the 10R80 be used for the Grand Touring models with their extra torque requirements for the electric motor?

EDIT: I think that I just answered my own question by reading the following article:

Gears Magazine - It's a Family Affair - 10R140, 10R80, and 10R60; The Same But Different

The 10R80 was developed first for engines like the 3.5L EcoBoost and has an input torque rating of about 590 ft-lbs. The 10R60 is a more recent version developed for Ford’s smaller engines and has an input torque rating of about 443 ft-lbs. The transmissions are similar in design, but parts are not interchangeable. There is also a 10R140 that was developed for the high torque outputs of the Super Duty truck engines at up to 1,050 ft-lbs.

What year and trim is yours? Are you having the same issue? A little more info would be useful.

Mine did the same thing at 75000 miles. They first replaced everything they replaced on yours. Then they said the trans cooler went out and replaced it. Ford said it was fine then three days later, the trans was gone!

The member you quoted was last seen here on December 27, 2023, so likely is no longer following.
What year and trim is your Aviator? Have you taken it back to the dealership?
