I have a 2005 Aviator with about 118,000 miles. The AC went out, and after a couple of tries the dealer found a leak in the front to rear A/C line. He said that it would be over $2000 to replace, mostly labor, because, "It's as if they installed the A/C line first and then built the car around it." I don't doubt this, as I've been going to this dealer for Ford service for 30 years and they've always been reasonable.

I mostly ride in the car by myself, so efficient rear A/C isn't an issue. I asked if they could simply disconnect the rear line at the compressor and close it up. I'd have A/C in the front which would take care of me and supplement the defroster, and probably enough would flow to the back that it would be fine. The dealer was reluctant to do it because there is no procedure. But it still seems like the right idea to me.

I'd love to drive the car for another few years. The problem started in September, so I'm probably good through March. Any advice or suggestions would be welcome.
