1995 Cartier Town Car with 193,000 miles. Had been running great with slight hesitation if "mashing the gas".

One day, oil light started coming on when braking to stop, checked, looked at correct level to me. Maybe a week of driving more and then morning I was going to get oil change, very shaky to accelerate and driving completely rough. They said I was quart and a half low on oil. Put thicker oil, I put some "honey" additive. Oil light went away, still drove awful. Day of driving and now Check Engine light on. A P0304 code, cylinder #4 not firing properly, and P1474, Low Fan Control Primary Circuit Malfunction.

That weekend, mechanic friend checked engine's oil compression, perfect he says. So did tune up, wire barely on last spark plug on passenger (cylinder 4) and crappy looking plug, replacing all wires and plugs made huge difference in power. Checked compression to each piston, two middle ones on passenger he said were lowerer than all others.

Can mash the gas now with no "hiccup"... but still uncomfortably shaky when starting to accelerate and idling (smooth in park, neutral). And almost here like a tapping noise right in steering wheel area of dash/firewall, wouldn't call it a "knock". Love the car, just don't know what to do next... any ideas? Thanks

My 1986 Corvette ran like crap one day for no reason. I cleaned the MAF Sensor and it was a Corvette once again.

Definitely clean the MAF sensor, that's one of the first things I do when I buy a car. Also look into cleaning the throttle body, those two things will make a world of a difference almost night and day. Those are just some cheap and very simple solutions I'd start with if I were you, best of luck

HMMM...sounds a bit more serious than a filter, espescially if an oil light came on! Most of the above suggestions have merit, but I personally would NEVER operate a unit once the oil light remained lit! Theres my dime! But keep in mind if regular oil changes aren't performed on these 4.6s,timing chain noise is common and usually on the left bank and almost always result in failure in high RPM situations!

And in the end .... just a coincidence happened with oil light on.... new ignition coils were needed. Crazy.
