Spring Rates

im tired of the air bag suspension on my car, its a pain in the but. its iether too high or sits too low and the dumb air pump pumps all the time. i also dont like how soft the spring rate is. i just want to get rid of it. i want to run the maximum motorsports toqure arm and panhard bar along with mustang rear lower control arms. how much shorter are the mustang control arms than the Mark VII\'s? and what do people think would be a good spring rate for this back set up and what would be a good spring rate for the front?

Mustang arms are about an inch shorter. The torque arm as is will be too short for the correct geometry and IC. 450# front, 300# rear would be a good start on springs.

Soapbox warning: the LSC air springs have non-linear rates which is what makes them cruise smoothly and handle the twisties so well (provided the usual anti sway bar upgrades are installed). With coil springs you have to decide on one or the other. My advice: make your system perform as designed. But if you do change to coils can I have your air springs?

You could get progressive rate coils, but I doubt they have the range of the air springs.

The air springs are a little soft for me for really demanding driving, but dampers have a big effect on perceived motion control. A set of Konis can do wonders for the ride and handling for most drivers. They eliminate the last bit of float going down the highway at 80+.

i have koni yellow SA on the front but i think the mustang koni shocks for the rear are too short. i was looking at them in the junk yard and thats what it looked like.

What I found made the largest difference on my car was the adjustable Konis. They have offered a near perfect blend of comfort and handling, except for in VERY demanding high speed corner carving. At that point the front springs are just a tad too soft and the suspension hits the bump stops. If somebody made a slightly more aggressive air bag it would fix that issue and make for one hell of a ride.

Good points here. What anti-sway bars and bushings do you have with the front springs feeling soft?

Our experience with \"Old Blue\" is that with the Town Car front bar (185% as stiff as stock), the ADDCO 415 (about 300% as stiff as stock) and all urethane bushings on bars and links we haven\'t yet hit the stops in very vigorous cornering. And this is with OEM style Monroe Sensatracks on all four corners and stock size tires on stock 7\" wheels. In the very near future the Koni SVO shocks and struts go on with MM C/C plates. and 8\" wheels with wider tires.

As for a more aggressive air spring, we\'ve done the engineering on a sabot for the LSC spring which will make it considerably stiffer near full bounce while keeping the softer rate at mid range. It just remains to build a set and test them. This has to wait until all the \"standard\" mods have been made.
