How often are you folks changing the oil in your gas engine?

Around our little town we are able to do all the running around, and the gas engine never runs. But yet I know the engine oil should be changed, but how often?

Thanks, Dave

I have about 2,700 miles on my car and the oil life indicator is at 49%. Probably 800 of those miles used the ICE. Ford obviously takes in to account the harder life ICEs in PHEVs experience in terms of calculating oil changes. I'll probably just follow the oil life indicator's recommendation.

Every 5,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. Oil has a finite shelf life and it breaks down over time regardless of use. And 5,000 miles would be the normal interval recommended by your Service Department.

This is a good question and one that I am constantly debating with the service manager

When I take my PEHV in for an oil change, a sticker is placed on the car to remind me to change it every 5,000 miles or 6 months. I believe that is the information.

However, within 3,000 miles, the change oil prompt begins to appear, with my oil life approaching 0%

I had asked the service manager what I should do --- act on the oil life prompt or wait for the 5,000 miles.

He told me that the oil life is more important.

And what is interesting is that I rarely use gas. I am retired, and all my driving is within a 30 mile radius. I only put 1/2 tank of gas in my car every other month. One would think that's less oil usage than running on gas. I may be wrong about that.

I don't know what to believe, which is why I tend to use this forum as a sounding board.

ICEs lead a hard life in PHEVs. They start cold and then run high RPMs. If you're in EV only and merge on to an interstate the engine wakes up and is then under full load. Ford recalibrated the oil life monitors in PHEVs for a reason. I'd go with the oil monitor recommendation or sooner.

The PHEV is a tad different than the hybrid as you all may know. There are two separate motors in it that can run independently. And as many have pointed out you can do a lot of local trips and almost never have the ICE run. But is that a good thing?

The Corsair GT is not an EV, and while you can almost treat is as one, that care may over the long run, reduce the life and durability of the ICE component.

My contention is that the ICE needs to run more than once a month or so, for a few minutes, to get the best long term use.

It's winter time here in NJ and lately the vehicle takes a while to warm up during the cold spells. I did have it in for the first oil change and asked them to check the temps. The dealer said it's working as designed. So during these colder months I run in Excite mode. Car warms up faster.

Gas is pretty cheap here. Around $2.50 a gal while electricity rates have gone through the roof. When I first got my 2022 GT I did some calculations and if gas was around $2-2.50 or kWh was at $.25 or higher than gas would be a better deal.
Only downside is the tank is a bit under 12 gal so I need to fill up more regularly.

I use the oil monitor to determine when a change should be done. The manual says 10k or once a year which is what I've used in past GT and hybrids. Since I drive less that 10k a year I usually get the oil changed at around 8-9 months. Or about 1/3 oil life left from the monitor indicator.

Good read and greetings from a neighbor in Central NJ.

Hi NJRonbo. Assuming your driving habits and environment are of the “normal”, non severe-duty type (I’m assuming they are): This is happening because the service department Tech is improperly resetting (or not resetting) the IOLM after performing the oil change.

The Lincoln recommended OCI is 1 year/10,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Of course, we are free to perform our oil changes earlier and at any interval we wish.

You can check your Oil Life remaining in both the Lincoln App and in the dashboard settings.

I would recommend that owners be more proactive. Read the Owners Manual section explaining the IOLM. Try to understand the IOLM. Check to be sure it is properly reset by the Tech after an oil change. It should read 100% on both the Lincoln app and dashboard settings when it has been reset. And keep a record of your oil changes. Date and mileage.

Then…
- Either follow the IOLM and change when getting close to 1 year/10,000 miles ( the IOLM will be approaching 0% and offer dash and app warnings).
- Or cut your OCI’s to 6 months/5,000 miles (the IOLM will be approaching 50%).
- Or choose any month/mileage/percentage duration you wish, as long as it is 1 year/10,000 miles or less (as “dogo88” does).

Hope this information helps and good luck.
