'97 Town Car Cartier fuel gauge issue

I just bought a 1997 Cartier Town Car, 88,000 miles, in great shape overall. But the digital dash is showing a problem with the fuel gauge. It is showing the "CO" code and only the top 2 & bottom 2 lines on the fuel level gauge. The owner's manual says, "contact the dealer service". Can anyone tell me what the issue may be, saving me a trip to the dealer? I really don't know how this system works. Is there a fuel sending unit that could be bad? Any help is appreciated!

More than likely the contact in the sender are bad. Very doubtful there are available parts to fix it OEM.

You may have to take the sender apart and replace the individual part(s) with universal parts to get it back working again

IIRC CO = Circuit open. An OEM manual, a DVM .Check the sending unit down at the gas tank.
