Hello all, I read all weekend on the forum through all the different threads trying to make sure this wasn't a repost so please forgive if it is.

On Friday morning when I opened the trunk I heard a weird grinding noise from behind the license plate. Trunk opened and closed through key fob just fine and like a idiot brushed it off.

Friday evening I stopped to get gas, opened the trunk to throw something in and heard the noise again. Still functioning fine with key fob I opened it up to investigate when I noticed the pull down didn't seal truck. Went to open it with key fob and the truck gave a twisted motion but didn't open, tried a second time and got same results. Opened fine with key but after closing it locked but still wouldn't pull down. I drove it home in that condition to investigate.

Once I return home I tried one more time with key fob it wouldn't open but twisted, I opened again with key and it would again power close but not seal with pull down motor. I pulled cover investigated all harnesses for broken or loose wires found none. Removed pull down motor which is obviously stuck in full up position. Found gear wheel and track to be undamaged and moved track to full close by hand and reinstall motor. Immediately once plugged in it returned latch to full up.

Now the power trunk won't function up or down and power pull down still doesn't function. Checked fuses, voltage and Removed negative battery plus unhooked both motor for power trunk and pull down to see if it would reset but still same condition. I left it by manually lowering latch by hand, unplugging the power pull down and closing trunk and its sealed best I can tell but have open trunk warning.

I have read a lot about the pull down motor going out but why did the power trunk stop working? Is there a connection I'm not seeing?

Any help would be welcomed an sorry for long read.

Age/time, lack of grease, and dirt/debris in the mechanism will cause things to wear out and fail.

I appreciate the response, I am just confused about the power trunk quitting as well. I'm assuming the first course of action would be to replace the pull down motor. I did notice that there is a sensor in the bracket that holds the pull down motor that signifies up and down to the control unit.

Anyone had an issue with that before ?

Hey there. In my experience, the power trunk feature is reliant on all the separate parts functioning together, the power deck lid, lock actuator, and pull-down motor, if one of them is not working properly it messes with the functionality for some reason. I had almost the exact same symptoms as you and my issue was a bad trunk lock actuator.

Thanks Raider! I don't know why I didn't think of that, with it being close but the open light on and it not unlocking that makes a lot of sense.

I will run down a replacement and follow up with an update. I didn't notice the sensor in it. Going to feel a little dumb if that's it, can't believe I overlooked that.

I believe the actuator does have sensor in it, but it's not serviceable, you have to replce the whole module

Big thanks to you Raider! I was going to start with the pull down motor but I followed your advice and went with the Trunk Lock actuator. Finally got the time to install part today and it's all fixed.

Thank you again!

That's what we like to hear! Glad you got it working again. I love the power trunk feature.

Yup, it was the (trunk lid latch lock actuator) on the 09 I just got. Almost exact same symptoms. Was working fine then It would lock shut, flop around but not pull down all the way & not open. Key fob/button still activated until I used the key. Unplugged switch/plugged back in & the same thing happened. Using the key deactivated the electronic opener. Also the power lid opener/closer was not functioning when I got it, now it is (didn’t know it had that feature after replacing my 2001). That you so much for this thread. After hours of research, I was convinced it was the lower unit (pull down lock release striker motor).

I have a 09 and it is not fully closeing, the truck moter brings it down but it does soft close. Which part/ motor or actuator is the one that brings it to a full tight close?
