Consumer Reports says avoid 2022 Aviator

I take CR with a grain of salt, but of the top 10 luxury SUVs to avoid, the Aviator was number 2. Said there were problems with everything form body integrity to electronics. Mine was just shipped the other day. I remain hopeful and am sure most owners are satisfied. Stay tuned. Regards

I have been a subscriber to CR for as long as I can remember and find that their reviews are generally accurate. Not only do they do their own testing but they get input from members as well. I have received several mailings and emails from them asking me to review items that I indicated that I bought to see how they are performing and holding up. My 2020 Aviator doesn't have the most favourable rating but so far it has been very good. Also, I lease my vehicles so long term issues don't bother me since I only have them 3-4 years.

This is the concern for me. We keep our cars a long time. The CR review is the only overly negative review I have seen for the Aviator. Edmunds, Car and Driver and others aren't as harsh as CR. Even personal reviews on Youtube aren't bad. It's a roll of the dice.

Concur with peterk9. Individual experiences and reports don't compare in relevance with the database CR uses. I have found several issues with my BL that I am unable to get resolved. That said, I consider myself lucky that I am not experiencing some of the catastrophic failures reported on this forum. New vehicles are scarce at this time, due to the chip shortage, but I will replace my Aviator ASAP. That situation is a shame because I really like some of the Aviator features. The buyback option is also not attractive due to soaring used values and loss of the of a trade-in sales tax advantage.

But as everyone says it all depends and as with everything people with issues are the most vocal. I also did purchase a 8 year extended warranty with mine just incase to give me peace of mind.

Id say if your concerned get an extended warranty. Mine wasn't terribly expensive for 8 year 100k miles

Mine is a Reserve. Seems like a few more of the Hybrid (BL?) owners have had issues. Makes sense. Just more going on. I have no illusions though. I was a Teamsters Union Airline division member for 28 yrs. We had to get it right and were proud of our work. You can bet the technicians who are building these SUVs in Chicago are union. They should be, and are proud of their product.

I think the issue is if the Hybrid owners do have issues they are more major. Both of my aviator gts (had a 2020 and now have a 2022) and my parents cosair gt have been fine in relation to their engine/battery components.

I believe Corsairs are made in Kentucky. Several dealers have told me the Chicago Aviator plant is known for quality issues.

I bought my GT pre-owned from a non Ford/Lincoln dealership and have had 0 problems. First completely American car I have owned and have no complaints. Love the look, the features, the power, and the MPG for a vehicle of this size. The EV and hybrid driving aspect of the vehicle helps with that MPG. I am not a heavy footed driver, but not a hyper-miler either. I keep the vehicle fully charged for my around the town driving. When the charge is out, I still have the hybrid/gas to fall back on. So again, MPG is way better than it would be if it was a straight ICE.

Sorry for going off topic. Bottom line, do your homework and drive both the reserve and GT to before you make a decision. Good Luck!!

I am very happy i got the GT as well and at least in my state when I purchased it I was able to qualify for 1300ish off for it being ev then also doing the federal 6700ish tax credit which was nice and at least for me was fully usable.

I couldn't get the tax credits as I purchased pre-owned. Would have been nice, but not a game changer when I purchased. I did install a 240V station for charging here at home. I did get the tax credit allowed from the fed for that.

Several posts in the Explorer forum blame the Chicago issues on the union because so-called slackers can't be fired.

I’ve owned a 2020 BL and now a 2022 BL GT. Both have been great vehicles. No problems with moisture, mechanical, or electrical. I had a slight door alignment issue on 2020, but it was so minor I never had it rectified.

I put 28,000 miles on 2020 and I took delivery of 2022 in December. I now have 4,500 miles on it.

Speaking to this topic of quality today with my dealer (getting paperwork in order for our pending arrival) - he said they would cringe when 2020 Aviators arrived. Sometime in the 2021 run the problems seemed to stop from their perspective; 2022 is also well made with very few issues.
