While installing mud guards on my 22 Standard, I found the the felt type wheel well insulation on the inside of the right rear wheel doesn't appear to be fastened properly. Not within the wheel well. But, near the muffler. While the left rear insulation is fastened appropriately, the right side just seems to hang floppy.

Is this the way they all are or was a step missed in the build process on mine? Has anyone noticed the same on their vehicle,?

Mine is snug all around. But what's the deal with that padding? Seems like it will grab and not release road dirt, mud, twigs...I like the sound insulating properties but would have assumed Lincoln would place a plastic liner over top of the insulation.

Is it snug on the inside of the wheel? Underneath, near the muffler is where it is loose.
All the manufacturers use the felt material now. It absorbs noise.

Hi JEEP. It should be fastened on all sides. If one side is loose, have it looked at on your next routine maintenance service visit, or set up an earlier appointment.

Let us know how you make out and good luck.

Plastic would just make it noisy again. the felt is quiet and serves the same purpose. It doesn’t hold road debris, rinses out like plastic.

No it’s a little loose at the bottom but it functions properly. I was also concerned when installing my splash guards. The liner is fastened at all its designed fasteners. It is a very light weight material and I’d guess Ford decided that’s all that’s needed.

I can't remember if it was here or another site or Facebook that I saw similar concerns. The lower lip of the wheel liner should be held with bolts/screws onto a piece going in between the bumper and wheel liner. I saw someone posted that piece wasn't there. Not sure what exactly is happening...maybe this whole supply chain thing is causing things to be built in advance and they're forgetting to go back?🤷‍♂️

I thought that I had found the various missing/loose trim pieces on my GT after meticulously detailing the other day but after this mud flap discussion, I’m gonna have to revisit my wheel wells.

What is the year/model in this picture? Mine is a 22 standard. As you can see, mine doesn't look anything like your picture. If you look at mine, I didn't have any bolt as you show near the tire. I added the Push pin that I show going through the bottom of the mud flap. The bottom of my felt liner doesn't even extend down far enough in that area to be attached. Nor does it extend back to the area where you show the second bolt at the top of your picture. I have a hole, but no bolt. Yet on the left side, I have both bolts and they are attached.

Mines a 21 Reserve with the 2.3L.

At first I thought maybe this was a feature or cost move. If others can look underneath, that may be a clue. The Ford Parts website isn't friendly and I can't make heads or tails how this part is named or category it goes into.

A few options:
- someone goofed at the factory?
- parts shortage and it wasn't built with it?
- cost or efficiency move? (Doesn't really impact the vehicle)
- something that differentiates a Standard versus Reserve or GT? (More insulation?)
- something on 2.3L equipped versus 2.0L?

Same as mine

Mine mirrors JeepGrady's. The holes without bolts makes it appear "wrong/incomplete". The passenger side has a metal looking shape bolted to the insulation to further insulate against the exhaust pipe but the driver's side hangs free. I don't like it, but I am comforted that it is not an outlier.

Are you sure it’s not the other way? The open holes on the passenger side with the wheel liner hanging free at bottom.

I’m sure. Funny, I figured Jeep mixed up “right and left“.

I have a GT. Passenger side is attached, driver side has exposed holes. Here is driver side view. 1648434268506.jpeg
The full view shows sound material bolted to special heat shield (and factory hitch)

is yours opposite?

Oh now I understand, you are referring to the 2 holes in the felt wheel well liner on the bottom of driver side. Jeep and I are referring to the 2 holes in the body panel behind the passenger side rear wheel, lol. See photos.
Your referral circled in yellow?
Our referrals circled in red. Prior to the right rear mud guard being installed both holes in the body panel are open. On the left side both holes have factory bolts.

It appears that the GT has a different rear exhaust setup with additional heat shields and a different under rear configuration. From your photos of the GT it looks like the empty body panel holes ( Standard model) on the passenger side do have bolts in them for the GT. My conclusion is that Ford uses the same body panels and just a different configuration of parts attached to them for the different models and engines.

Ah, that's is. Sorry for my confusion. I was so struck by the open "felt" holes I assumed that was what you initially meant. No plans to add mud flaps here. To have mud, one must have rain! (which we sorely need).

It got cold again, but I snapped two photos from my '21 Reserve with the 2.3L.
