Town Car Gas Millage

Where you getting gas for $3 a gallon? No where in America has that price, no where.

I was using a figure for what gas cost on average at the time I was doing most of these trips. I know it is not anywhere close to that now, but this is also an unusual period.

23.2 shows on my display, running city/highway in my 1998. About 60% interstate and running at 70 plus most of the time I'd call that good fuel economy.

I have multiple mods on mine and a heavy foot. I get 18.3 combined.

When this motor goes or I find a deal a 5.4 will be built and crammed in there. I'm sure I can get that milage lower. Have to offset the electrics carbon footprints somehow.

I've been keeping track of mileage in my 1985 Town Car. It averages 14 miles to the gallon, which is what the internet says it should be.

That was FINE until gas went up over a dollar a gallon. Now I'm mainly sticking to local driving and avoiding the half-hour and forty-five minute trips and taking the wife's minivan instead. But SIGH, the minivan is no Town Car.

I get about the same on my 04 with almost 250K on it now. Ain't bad all things considered. Ain't good, but it ain't bad lol..
Fairly light footed city driving in more like 18, and I bet with a more youthful right foot one could push that down into the 15-16
range. Annoyingly I do a lot of city driving anymore, of what little driving I actually do.


Now cue the one guy that always gets 28mpg out of his Town Car while towing a trailer up a mountain somehow.
There's always a few...

Well since you opened the door I got 43 MPG towing a Ford 9N tractor from Wisconsin to Ohio and then I woke up from that dream. Well if you do hit the reset button when on mpg going downhill it will read 99.9 for a second. But that don't count I guess??

Yes thats what gave me the super extra mpg. That and a quart of shine to raise the o take to jet engine proportions!!

Its cold here and so I have been putting off working on the Town Car for the moment. Also with gas prices the highest they have been since 2014 it seems timely to roll out this data I have been collecting.

I did a number of runs with the Town Car, recording fuel use,d miles traveled by the odometer, and the displayed MPG of the computer. In total this represents 2647 miles of driving. Here is a table with the data.

This was all highway travel, over a varied set of locations. There is significant overall elevation change, and many of these are not on particularly flat ground but I have excluded the most mountainous section.
For all but one run the Town Car was pretty well loaded in the trunk but only the driver inside.
Average speed varied over the runs, with some being mostly cruising at 84 with others having a mix of 70-80 with much lower speed through small towns.
Overall the computer claimed a mileage of 22.5, with one missing value I forgot to record. The calculated millage without that value was 22.3 so on the whole the computer is fairly accurate it seems.
The actual average was 22.2, which given that mine is an L wheel base and only rated for 23 seems reasonable. I am sure if I had knocked 5 mph off the 84 cruising sections that would have put us to 23. Not bad for having 120k miles on it.

I have yet to get more then 18 miles a gallon on the dash display. The tank now costs $80.00 US Dollars to fill!

MSD ignition coils and new Motorcraft plugs- 24.4 mpg for a 1998 with 116,000. Consistently, city/highway.
