“Night” Display Background Bug - Sync Screen Not Changing to Night Mode

I have a bug on my 2020 Aviator where my chosen display background color will not show the correct choice after starting the car.

I have chosen the “tan” color, 4th option on the right, and set the mode to “Night”, which should then always default the background to the darker (essentially black) background.

However, almost every time I start the car, it displays the tan, non “Night” version color. Happens about 90% of the time… but sometimes it will boot up properly into the darker version.

I have noticed that if I put the car in reverse, after it is switched out of reverse and the backup camera goes away, the background color will then display the proper “Night” version.

This is clearly a bug. Has anyone else experienced this? Any fixes you have found other than going into reverse, or going into “Display” settings and pushing the “Night” button again? Any idea of how to get this on Lincoln’s radar to fix?

It’s annoying because I really prefer the look of the black background screen, (during day or night) and just wish it would display properly when I start the car.

I havent had this exact issue but I have noticed that on occasion if I have my sun shade up when starting the car it defaults to night mode (even when I take the shade down). I believe it has something to do with the sensor and I believe the sensor is somewhere near the rearview mirror. I have also noticed that at night (with no sunshade) that if I quickly start and shift into reverse that the display stays in the day setting if I am too quick to let it "boot" up correctly. This is super annoying at night because the screen in day mode is super distracting. This goes away if I cycle the ignition.

Is your “Day/Night” theme for your background display set to “Auto”?

Mine is set to “Night”, so it shouldn’t rely on the sensor at all I would think… but still doesn’t boot up correctly.

Thanks… my problem is that it is set to “Night” (not auto), but when car starts the screen still boots up in the day mode.

I have to put it into reverse, which then seems to kick it into “Night” mode.

Definitely not working as intended.

That’s frustrating. I love this car but really hope they fix their design flaws and glitches for 2023 Aviator before my lease ends. I’m torn if I go with another Lincoln Av. TBA.

I had the same issue a couple of times but now it seems to have resolved itself. Come to think of it, I believe the times it remained in 'daylight' mode was when I drove out of the driveway frontwards. Later coming home, I first reversed out of a parking spot and it was in 'night' mode. Member Phattydeluxe may have something there. I usually back out of the driveway but if I'm out and about and know I'll be using the vehicle again that day, I'll back in.

Hi canus and welcome to the Lincoln Forums. Just a thought, since it has happened to others: Is there anything on the dash that could inadvertently cover the light sensor? If yes, this could/would trick the system into thinking it is night time even when it is light out.

Yes. If I hit the Camera button and then hit it again, it corrects. Usually happens when I come out of my garage or from under a bright light. A bit odd.

Also, in regards to what Black Label noted: There is a delay in switching from day mode to night mode and back (I'm not sure, perhaps 10 seconds). This is to avoid it switching back and forth like crazy when we drive under overpasses, short tunnels etc.

Welcome to the Forum.

I have had the issue several times. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. In my case, no switching is required since I start and end when it is dark outside.
BTW, there is already a thread on this that I found d using the handy 'Search' feature at the upper right.

It has happened to me once. Fortunately it was locked in night mode so it wasn't too bad at night (too bright). It eventually cleared on its own. I don't even know when it cleared, but it hasn't happened again.

I have a 2022 aviator with 600 miles. The screen does not go into night mode in the morning when I first used the card. It's in the auto mode. I start the car up early morning when it's dark out and it stays in day mode. I get to where I'm going shut the car off do what I have to and then come back out in about an hour still dark out when I start it up it goes into the dark mode auto.

This has been happening since I got the car. I had it to the dealer they could not find anything wrong. They pulled into the shop and of cause it will work. But it only happens early morning when I first start it up. I even started the car up drove a block or two, stopped the car, shut it off open the door so everything was off. Then started the care back up still in the day mode but yet I go to where I am going after about an hour start it up and it works still dark out and it goes into night mode.
But every day when first start it up it does not work in auto. Any suggestions, the dealership didn't have clue

Just out of curiosity, when you start to drive off in the morning do you start off driving frontwards or do you have to reverse first? I have the same issue at times and it appears to happen more often when I pull out of the driveway frontwards instead of backwards first.

Although I'm not sure, I would think that it may somehow be tied into the headlight sensor on the dash.

Well… the headlight sensor may not be the problem, as I have mine always set to “Night” (I prefer the black background in both day & night). So I never have it set to “Auto”… so I would imagine it should never use the sensor in that case right?

If it’s set to “Night”, shouldn’t it just default to the dark black screen? No matter how bright or dark it is outside?

So perhaps part of the problem is the sensor, for those having these issues while in “Auto” mode, but in my case this is clearly a programming/software bug.

What’s strange, after going into reverse, or clicking on the camera button, both will kick the display from day mode into night mode (even though my setting is always set to Night).

Hopefully someone from Lincoln can fix this pesky bug. It annoys me every time I start my car. Shouldn’t happen on a luxury vehicle of this caliber.

It appears to be an issue Lincoln either isn't addressing or it's not important to them.
I believe that if you represent something is a feature and it doesn't work they should address the issue for a fix. I called Lincoln up and they of cause said there isn't an issue and to have your dealer address it. My dealer isn't getting back to me, but if I don't hear back by today I will go further.
It is an issue if so many on here have experience the problem.
I appreciate the feed back from the members. I will let you know if I do go further what the results were.
