New To Me 2017 Conti

Hello all, new to forum. As of today I've had my new to me 2017 Lincoln Continental Reserve for 2 weeks. Loaded up with pretty much all options as far as I can tell, except it has the 2.7L engine. Love it so far, great car. Wish the gas mileage was better, but doesn't help when I can't keep my heavy foot off the gas. Love the Revel Ultima sound system, the all wheel drive was great in slick snow covered roads. Everything about this car is awesome! Happy to finally be a Lincoln owner.

I looked at a white one as well, but found out it had been in an accident. This one was a 1 owner and did service every 3,000 miles. Good buy. Sooo, what's you secret to getting good mileage? Obviously not heavy on gas pedal, but any other suggestions? Currently I'm averaging 18.5 mpg, but once again it's new to me and I love the power. Also been remote starting a lot in cold weather, love the climate package. Lots of non-highway driving as well.

Looks just like mine. I commented on your Facebook post yesterday. I want to ask you if you hear an annoying whine in your engine around 40-45 mph when it sounds like it should shift up but doesn't. If you're in D and hit S, it goes right away.
Dealer has it now for second time looking into it. The first time they claimed nothing unusual. I'm not buying it.

Looks just like mine. I commented on your Facebook post yesterday. I want to ask you if you hear an annoying whine in your engine around 40-45 mph when it sounds like it should shift up but doesn't. If you're in D and hit S, it goes right away.
Dealer has it now for second time looking into it. The first time they claimed nothing unusual. I'm not buying it.

Hey Andre, No I haven't noticed that as of yet. I'll try to pay a little more attention. I usually have the stereo up kinda loud when I drive, it just sounds so good.

18.5 MPG in cold weather, using remote start and not much highway driving sounds like very good mileage to me.

Hi Ddizzler. What brucelinc stated. That is good mileage for a large luxury vehicle, in the current driving environment you describe. Especially if you also keep the Climate Control system on AUTO all the time. And if your driving includes frequent short trips.

Obviously, you can improve your MPG's by using remote start sparingly, and using the AUTO/AC Climate Control settings only when necessary. Otherwise, just use the manual Climate Control settings.

Also, keep in mind you will also seea slight increase in mileage once your engine and drivetrain loosen up after the first few thousand miles. This is mentioned in the Owners Manual (or at least has been previously).

It would be useful to know where you live: the first two winters I had the car, mileage was like yours -- 18mpg or so for everyday driving around town and an occasional run on the freeway; but would jump to close to 30 when running down to Charlotte or up to DC. This winter it has been incredibly mild with no remote starting and little need for AC to clear the windscreen. But then I have been driving for sixty years so working the dials is easy.

Slight whine in third and fourth before going to top -- not an issue really, and no worse than old Fordamatic and Cruisematics years ago. ZFs in Jags and Land Rovers had that slight whine too. None of my BMWs did (. . . sticks! What I wouldn't give for a manual.). But, since I lease this car and it is pretty clear it will still be in warranty if the tranny fails, I am not sweating it -- ". . . here Ford, it is yours!"

I live in OH. Most of this winter has been pretty mild, but since I've gotten the car it's of course been cold and frost/snow. Admittedly most of my driving has been around town with little highway. Lots of remote starting also. I imagine it will be better. Before this car I was driving a 2010 Ford Fusion with a 4 cylinder which got good mileage. The Fusion is now going to my soon to be 16 year old son.

Hi, I also notice a distant whine strictly between 40 and 50 mph, nothing at lower or higher speed. On all gears 3 to 6.
And it only occurs on light throttle on/light throttle off. Nothing if I use cruise control or accelerate/decelerate. Only on the intermittent condition from coasting to cruising and back.
2017 3.0 AWD.
Anyone had it figured out?

Hi Todor. Is your 2017 Continental still within the 4 year/50,000 mile New Car Warranty and/or the 6 year/70,000 mile Powertrain Warranty? If yes, make a service appointment and take your car in to be properly checked.

Personal recommendations: Do not just tell them you hear a whine between 40-50 mph, hand them the keys and leave. Instead, ask the Service Writer to send a tech for a ride with you, or to go with you personally. Demonstrate the whine to them and make sure they clearly state they hear it too. This helps avoid the dreaded "Could not duplicate customers concern" diagnosis.

And don't forget, you are entitled to a complementary loaner vehicle. Remember to tell them you will need a loaner when you call to set up the appointment. Otherwise, there may be none available on the day of your service appointment.

Bbf2530, thank you very much for the reply. I think it has warranty up to 2027, or at least to 2023 and is presently at about 25k miles.
Unfortunately, I live in Europe-Bulgaria, so no Lincoln dealers around here. If something breaks, it will most likely be out of my pocket. - that's the price you pay for chasing vehicles you like around the planet (although for 12 years nothing major went wrong on my S197 Mustang GT, if anything at all)

Hi Todor. Bulgaria? Well, at least you have a very unique vehicle over there and certainly don't have to worry about seeing other Lincoln Continentals at every stop light.

Since warranty service is not an option for you, I will leave it to other Continental owners to give you advice on what they may have done, if they had the same issue.

Sounds like a differential pinion gear or rear axle bearing(s). The particular speed range may be due to harmonics in the pinion gear. The half shafts bearing(s) noise may increase with speed and be louder on turns that load the problem bearing. The differential gears themselves can whine with wear or damage. Have you checked the oil level since you changed it?

Could this be related to your trans snap at 20 kph on light throttle?

The snap is gearbox related, I added a video and some thoughts in the other thread.
As for the whine, if it is not from the gearbox which it might well be, including front crown and pinion whining slightly due to the guys at the shop not shaking oil bottles thus leaving the additives in the empty bottles, or it could be from PTU/rear diff overfilling.
Overfilling can submerge too much of the gears in oil and cause excessive aeration. I poured full 1 L of oil both in the PTU and the rear diff.
The same could happen to an overfilled engine, too much oil could make too much winding around the crankshaft, aerate the oil and cause hydraulic lifters to begin tapping and eventually wear out due to excessive amplitude.
